The eagles are straight up demigods. Ainur as he said. The ainur sent to help the world was the wizards, the eagles could not care less to what happens to the world. They did it as a favor for Gandalf.

I love this! I was such a huge LOTR nerd in high school, taught myself a bit of Quenya (Elvish) and everything. Don’t remember any of it now, but man, I was so into this series. I had no idea Tom Bombadil was an Ainur! When you explained more about the character of course it makes sense but wow! I love how passionate about the mythology this guy is. Thank you for the lesson, Professor Olsen!

A few things you didn’t mention; The Hobbit is inspired by Beowulf which Tolkien himself translated. And the Dwarves were made before the elves, and stored away until the elves could be properly created (according to the Silmarillion).

Why couldn’t they just fly the eagle’s to Mordor?

    • Mateo

      June 26, 2020 at 11:55 pm

Cause the eye would have saw them. Its just the dumbest coincidences that the army showed up at the gate to distract Sauron. The plan shouldhave been, Gandolph on eagle, everyone shows up at the door, distract while gandolph flies in.

Of course they’d have to fight their way there first. But its kind of whack that the 1 thing the enemy can do is ruin the ring, and they dont guard the volcano. Like not even 1 ring wraith to watch over, just assume some spider would stop anyone getting throuhh the passage.

Of course it is the cockiness of them and underestimating the weak hobbits.

  43. alec lightwood

    June 26, 2020 at 4:35 pm

I disagree. The Ainur are not actual Gods…. That’s kind of the whole point, they can’t create, they don’t have the creation power, which is why nothing they conceive can come to life, truly, unless actual God, Ilúvatar, breathes life into them. The Ainur represent Archangels, They are the children of Ilúvatar, just as the angels are the first children of God, that were supposed to put to use God’s plan, build what God had conceived, and what God would then breathe life into, and watch over God’s live creations (men and elves). Which is even more explicitly told by the very clear parallel between Manwe and Morgoth and Michael and Lúcifer.

    • Red Ashura

      June 27, 2020 at 1:39 pm

in Mortal’s view they are Gods (mentioned in The Silmarillion). they rule the nature and have nigh-omnipotence. however, they are not omniscience and can’t create anything without Ilúvatar’s power.

It’s actually very easy to understand the scale of power if you see Valar as the Archangels, because then Maiar are Seraphin and so on, and so on… That’s how it’s structured.

How could anyone watch this and know the huge amount of complexities in his books and not agree?

when I was in 6th grade, I wrote a book report on The Two Towers. It was such a long book but “luckily” I’d just watched the movies. I wrote a report on the movie lol. It was so wrong, and ended with the movie ending. my teacher called me in and asked me all kinds of questions. apparently she didn’t know the movies existed because I got off without a warning. looking back, it must’ve been an atrocious book report that should’ve made it obvious that I didn’t have enough time to finish half the book, let alone understand it. i’ve made up for that many time over by becoming obsessed with fantasy worlds. tolkien’s world is so deep and rich and has wonderful adaptations. hope the tv series gets finished soon. there are just so many great stories littered in the canon. I need more!

Men are the children of the sun and woke to this new phenomenon. The Elves are the children of the stars before the sun and moon existed. There’s a lot more than he explains here but that is understandable. He can’t fit it all in. The Dwarves were put to sleep and placed in Middle Earth until awakened later. Elves are known as the first born. Men are the 2nd born. There are other forms of men and other races not mentioned here.

This is a nice presentation, but bare in mind that this is a limited summary. The basic explanation is in fact a small book called The Silmarillion.
I call it basic explanation because all Tolkien wrote about Middle Earth and Arda takes about 12-14 books! LotR is condensed in a few pages inside Silmarillion.

species… not race… there is a difference… within “men” there might be race… but men, dwarves, elves these are different species in that world

    June 30, 2020 at 8:58 am

Dwarves were bad guys originally? The Silmarillion does not say this. It says Aule created them even before the Elves awoke, but they were like golems…no free will. Illuvatar did not like this so Aule was going to destroy them but Illuvatar intervened, and instead put them into deep sleep in the mountains, and he had pity for Aule so he gave them divine spark. They awoke only after the Elves, the first children of Iluvatar awoke. I don’t recall the Dwarves ever being “bad guys” that served Melkor. With the exception of the conflicts over the Silmarils, the Dwarves were great allies and friends of the Elves durring the Ages of the Stars and Trees, way before the First Age of the Sun and the awakening of Men. Some Dwarves did in fact fight for Sauron, though I don’t think any fought for Melkor. One thing is certain, they didn’t all of a sudden change to “good guys” when Tolkien wrote The Hobbit. The title of this video is misleading. the guy spent 39 minutes giving a brief history of Arda and barley touching on “Every Race In Middle-Earth Explained” A subject like this can’t be done in 39 minutes, also anyone who introduces themselves as “doctor” is automatically suspect, stick to telling your grand children stories and spare the rest of us….I call BS Clikbait on this one.

Just wanted to add that the Professor does a disservice to Tolkien and his readers by ignoring the massive influence Catholicism had on LOTR. Why is this important? Because Tolkien believed the Catholic narrative. He really believed in angels (elves), he really believed in fallen angels (orcs). He really believed in Priests (Frodo), Prophets (Gandalf), and Kings (Aragorn). All three of these characters are found in Jesus Christ, Priest, Prophet and King. So Tolkien didn’t just make up a story, he was sharing what he believed was really unfolding. A very real adventure all around us. WE are currently in a scenario similar to LOTR. What character will you play? This was Tolkien’s objective, not just creating a fantasy world. He was introducing us to the real world.

Petty Dwarfs, Fell beasts, shape shifters, vampires, animals, stone giants, watcher in the water, different varieties of troll, horses are mythical and unmentioned but wolves are, again with birds like thrushes, does not mention all the men peoples but does some and does elves, Black numenoreans? so a good presentation but flawed, and it was only in the movie that the undead went to gondor, Tolkien did not write that crap that made the whole battle redundant, he is not that stupid.

He keeps calling the wizards ainur. But they were maiar. In terms of hierarchy Eru > ainur > valar > maiar. Ainur were the gods that never entered Arda (= planet Earth), valar are the gods that did and maiar are the servants of the valar. For a Tolkien professor, he doesn’t seem to remember/know the most basic stuff.

The problem with this explanation of the uruk-hai is that, as shown in this video, in the movie they are clearly being grown in mud. Maybe one could say that a “person” is put there and changed in the mud, but it really gives the impression that they are constructs, grown, but not birthed.

the movie did it best by adressing how the uruk-hai were literally “made”, by genetically combining rogue villagers that hated Rohan with mordor orcs, using saruman’s magic
they quite literally harvest the uruk-hai, and some are genetically failed

Video is great! But I’m confused. If Morgoth can’t create life and has to corrupt elves to make orcs, how does he create the dragons? Also, following that rule, how does Aule create dwarves and Eru adopt them? Wouldn’t it be the other way around? Since Aule can’t create life? Also, aren’t eagles sentient? And doesn’t Manwe create them? Not trying to find holes, just genuinely curious if there are answers to this or if I’ve got the wrong idea.

Tom Bombadil does not have a conclusive answer. Gandalf (a maiar) cannot explain his existence, and even Tolkien said that he was supposed to be an enigma. Theories include him being an avatar of Eru Ilúvater.

The Valar had the ability to create individual themes (verses in a song), which included the creation of humans, dwarves, elves, dragons…It is almost as if the creations are part of their own life-force. Except for Tom Bombadil (aka father time/father Christmas).

Could anyone help me please with this statement that Tom Bombadil is one of the Ainur? As far as I know, it’s still an unresolved debate and one of the greatest mysteries of the legendarium, so what might be the reasons he chose to present it as a fact? Is it completely arbitrary, or am I simply late to a party?

i’ve heard that the eagles couldnt fly the ring to mordor because they are actually pretty powerful and the more power you have the easier the one ring corrupts you
thats also why a hobbit is tasked to bring the ring to mordor because they are mostly friendly in nature and not really mighty and this is also the reason why gandalf would never take the ring cuz he knows it will corrupt him!

The Oathbreakers never come to the battle of the pelannor fields, they defeat the corsairs of Umbar at pelagir, the Aragorn releases them after that more minor battle. Aragorn arrives at the pelannor fields with the Rangers of the north instead. Also, it’s never said Tom Bombadil is one of the Ainur, theorist think he might but Tolkien wanted Tom to not be anything but his. Goldberry was a maiar, as she’s a ‘River spirit’.

Lost interest as soon as we claimed Tom Bombadil was Ainur. Tolkien was quite adamant Tom Bombadil was to be a mystery. He was obviously different than Ainur since the ring literally had no affect on him. He was able to still see those who wore it and when worn he was still visible. The only definite thing Tolkien ever stated was that he was NOT Eru.

There is a question on my mind with all the good explanation you did. Melkor could not create life. When you said that he created life, I was thinking: but Orcs are not Elves corrupted? Then you explain that Tolkien changed it. But then the problems come. What About Ents, Giants, Trolls and all the other races? Eru created them? Tolkien couldn’t finish his works or there is a explanation for that?

I loved this video, Tolkien’s creations are my thing and you explained some things so well that I had to rewatch the video just to pay attention on every single piece of information. The point of Tom Bombadil was a nice way to see what he is!

I grew up reading Tolkien and Harry Potter and read still every day, fantasy being my favourite genre, and middle earth is the one world i keep returning most often. I love studying different mythologies also, hopefully they are still taught in school, atleast they still were when i was in school. We had to study about Kalevala (finnish national epos) around 8-10 years of age, i read the hobbit and lord of the rings around same time, didn’t realise the connection between those books then but afterwards it made me very proud to be finnish ^_^ even studied quenya, and didn’t even know it was very much based in finnish 😀

I love norse edda of our brothers also alot, and really wished one lifetime would be enough to learn about every folklore and mythology in the world.

Absolutely fantastic video man. I love the world of Middle Earth and everything to do with the works of J.R.R Tolkien.
