Since the early 2000s, private companies, governments, and research labs have been developing prosthesis that are a lot more advanced than previous designs. WIRED talked with Easton LaChapelle, founder and CEO of Unlimited Tomorrow, to understand how he designed, tested, and adopted his prosthetic arm.

The movie GENERATION IMPACT: THE INVENTOR, follows 25-year old innovator Easton LaChappelle, who developed the world’s lightest weight and most affordable bionic limb. GENERATION IMPACT: THE INVENTOR, can be viewed on HP.com’s digital hub, the Garage () and YouTube

I started out thinking the gold standard would be to make a prosthetic that looks just like the body part it’s replacing, like the bionic man. But I’ve listened to prosthetic wearers and have come to understand that they don’t want that. They actually want to show off their cybernetic tech. So I don’t see an need to make these things like something they’re not. If I had to have a cybernetic hand, I think want it to look like that. But choice is good!

It seems that it’s a challenge to make it like fully functional while being realistic (?) But it really does look amazing, they’re going the right way absolutely

I’d love to see wrist control next. Functionality and comfort should take priority of course, but I think the next most important thing should be realism. Try to make these limbs look and feel as realistic as possible while keeping them comfortable and functional

Until they become brain controlled, no matter how fancy they get, it’s crap. A few pre loaded movements connected to muscles.

I see a lot of people impressed that he built his first prosthetic at 14, and don’t get me wrong that’s really impressive, but it’s not an uncommon occurence. Me, my friend, and some of their friends have all made designs for prosthetics at 14/15. Admittedly none of us built any because of a lack of resources.

More realistic so people get scared or shocked when they realize it is a prosthetic?

  71. THE GOOD CONTENT

    November 13, 2021 at 1:07 am

IT would be better if a certain set of motions were programed in the arm. For example, cooking: holding knife. The user would create the movements or a pattern of movements or voice activation that would prepare the arm for that function. That way you avoid the tardiness of reaction. And programmers could create algorythms for those specific functions and the user could even adapt it’s prosthetic to their specific set of utensils or surroundings.

Giving the arm the capability to memorize those functions would be great and let the user fine tune the functionality inside those memories. Humans are very pattern driven animals. We tend to do the same things during our entire lives. Having those patterns inside the arm could help a lot. AI will be the main helper here.

People disliking the “realistic” prosthetics is highly due to the uncanny valley effect. It simply looks too real and not real at the same time. It makes us uneasy. The idea of this cool sci-fi, cyberpunk, transhumanist aesthetic with cool gadgets is far more appealing for many of us is because not only is it less creepy, it seems more practical. The semi realistic ones just want to look “real” while the robotic looking ones aim for practicality. They know what they are and they aren’t trying to convince us that they’re anything but a limb replacement. And that’s what we should be aiming for. As much practical use as possible. Besides, how cool would it be to have your phone built in to your forearm? Or have self defense taser knuckles. Or magnetic fingertips to pick up tiny screws. Have the ability to rotate your hand 360 degrees. Most of us would want to gain some functionality in exchange for losing a part of our body. Not just a (not so) cheap immitation of what we once had. If I’m losing an arm, I at least want a new one that has a crochet hook attachment and a flashlight so I can craft in the dark. Y’know what I mean? If the power goes out, I want 5g internet and an android os built into my forearm so I can watch netflix til it comes back on. This is what most of us want. We project this idea of normalcy onto people with limb deficiencies because that’s what we think it is. Abnormal. But instead, we should take it as an opportunity to give people the ability to do things that we normally can’t. Let them show off the marvels of modern engineering instead of hiding their differences. More people should be working on this. More people should be aiming for this future. Not trying to make everyone blend in to the masses.

Great to see that this has advanced. In fact Cyberdine had a nice exo-suit with some sort of sticker input. It might be possible to have a re-chargeable solution with kinematics and some clever power storages, like a flywheel etc. Since I suspect that this kind of a device must be strong but light-weight. Then again a flywheel would add to much vibration to it. Is this kind of stuff possible with pneumatic approach? There would be a lot of whoosh sounds then tho…

Lol. Yeah right. That’s the point of having lost a limb. You hope that you get something just as good depending on your civilization’ tech level.
In the far future of mankind’s horizons (provided we don’t blow each other to kingdom come), they WILL be far better than the original lost limb. Far enough into the future, we’ll just make a bio-mechanical vat grown replacement.

we spend all this time trying to replicate a human hand, when we have the ability to go far beyond that and make something so much better, why stop at only 5 fingers? why must the fingers only curl in one direction? we’re putting a hard limitation on what could be a far more useful prosthetic

The problem with “realistic” looking prostetics is that it’s kind of in the deep pit of the uncanny valley right now. Like there was no good way to replicate the realistic movements and texture of biology.
Movies, cartoons, and illustrations get around this by purposefully making faces look unrealistic, or stylized.
To prosthetic makers out there, try embracing the fact that they have a prosthetic instead of trying to mask it. We’re not far enough in this technology to mimic biology yet. Heck, even hire a designer/artist to come up with some ideas for you, or use some existing inspiration.

guys stop being engineers for a minute, human beings are filthy. You need a skeletal prosthetic, and a silicon skin glove to cover it. It provide grip, protection and the aesthetic, but also protects and waterproofs the interior. You need to watch your skin just like you do real skin- and these things get disgusting when you wear a lego on your skin thats constantly shedding itself.

It would be nice if you arrive at hyper realistic results and with the same mobility and agility as a human hand… I would love to return to having a normal life, you know it will be just a dream for me 😏

imo, trying to make a prosthetic realistic is always unsettling and disturbing. I never want to try to interact with these people, not because dislike them, but out of fear i miight say or behave something insulting by accident. On the other hand so people with very visible metallic or just cool style prosthetic leads to me be open speaking with them, because they obviously use a missing limb as a style choice, meaning they are fine with a missing limb and don’t want to hide it.

I rather choose a more badass looking arm then realistic one because of three things:
    1. Realistic arm makes a Uncanny valley feeling
    2. Building a cyber type arm have so much use like switch fingers (for construction, defense or putting some kind of device to your arm like a phone or something)
    3. It looks dope af

I got a good idea : make a software that connects to the AR glasses.. so basically if you were to lift ur hand and look at an object or intensify looking at 1 finger etc. To make the fingers lift, move, bend etc. Perhaps rethink the idea of having 5 fingers, and only 3
