I was particularly bothered by the passive aggressive “do you want anything else?” Because if somebody asked me that, I would think they are genuinely curious if I want anything else.

People need to mean what they say.

I’m gonna save you some time about the question in the thumbnail, it isn’t. Every person I have sat in a table with has never complained about me putting the elbows on the table

I didn’t realized until about 12-15 years ago that my grandpa, who was raised by an English mother, taught me the British way to cut food. I didn’t know there was a difference. It happened because I once accidentally sent a pancake flying at my grandpa when I was about 8 or 9, so he taught me the proper way to cut food: fork in your left hand, knife in your right, tines down, and do NOT switch your fork to your right hand, even if right-handed. It was definitely a learning curve that took me awhile to get comfortable with. And now that my grandpa is gone, it’s one of my most important memories.

US here. My mom was first gen US, but she taught me to indicate I was done eating to place my fork and knife horizontally across the top of the plate. It has always worked for me. I think the wait staff appreciates any indication of being done. I think the fork being turned downwards is great. I live in rural California and I don’t think many wait staff members even know what the word “manners” means.

Fun fact: this guy’s not even British, he’s just THAT polite

  26. @MopeyMoon

    August 8, 2024 at 8:09 pm

I am somewhat disappointed in the answer for “why does etiquette matter?” since he was essentially saying it matters because it matters. I believe etiquette matters since it sets expectations for behaviour to prevent misunderstandings. It also acts as a guideline for things that are generally considered rude or offensive (e.g., speaking with a full mouth). As demonstrated in this video, it also helps with fairness, one example being not interrupting others, but also being mindful to not speak too long. Another example for fairness is where you should not take the best cuts of food when serving yourself. It can even help with tidily eating food by outlining best practices that prevent spills and splashes.

Like any set of rules, some may seem archaic (and they might actually be, like the elbows on the table, which is more a matter of visual presentation now), but they’re often established for a reason.

  36. @seigeengine

Etiquette is ultimately about showing respect for others. Much of it has some sensible origin, but at the same time, anything beyond “be considerate, don’t create messes, and don’t bother other people” has missed the point. There is no correct way to eat spaghetti. If you’re not creating a mess, or causing problems for others, how you eat spaghetti is completely irrelevant, and anyone criticizing you over it is, in fact, showing poor etiquette.

    I’m going to deconstruct you.

  48. @seigeengine

    August 8, 2024 at 9:16 pm

To be clear, stirring back and forth like that is also more effective at dissolving sugar into the tea anyway, as it better mixes the sugar and tea compared to swirling the tea around.

It is disgraceful to call USA people and culture “American”. America is a continent, invisibilization and appropriation are things.
If I am the best in America at something I shouldn’t have tu clarify which America I am refering to.
Also imagine German people calling themselves “The Eurasians”.

  50. @ultralaggerREV1

Keep in mind that if you come to America it’s rude to bring the food to you mouth with the back of the tines towards the ceiling or trapping the food on the back of a fork with a knife. Also, hovering over your plate isn’t okay either.

A surprisingly delightful video, but if I may add one caveat: etiquette is situational. If you eat like this at a Wendy’s, you’re going to come off a touch condescending. Societal expectations, for example, are different for a white tie event, as opposed to gathering with some friends to ride fourwheelers through a bog lol.

Wait, about the fashionably late thing… could this be why my grandma never shows up on time??? Ever??? Like, my uncle lives with her and take care of her and stuff, but I know its both of them that do it. We have to tell them a time at least an hour earlier than we want them to be there otherwise the food will be cold. Her side of the family (my dad’s side) is English although she and her parents never lived there. My mom’s side however, is German/Slavic, and when we say “be here at this time” we MEAN it. Literally we abide by the “early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable” motto. So my mom is preparing say Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner and is making sure its ready to eat BY the specified time, but my grandma and uncle are basically always late and we have to keep it warm in the oven until they get here if we didnt give them an earlier time (or if they STILL ran late). In all honesty, Ive never seen the sense in being “fashionably late.” To me it feels like you’re disrespecting your hosts time.

  109. @dasstar6470

    August 11, 2024 at 8:32 pm

A very good reason to keep elbows off the table is to avoid causing seismic on the table with ‘RESTING’ elbows on the table. If the water in your glass trembles when a table mate rests between bites, an etiquette lesson, or a round of Tums should be the next course.

Etiquette is a euphemism for “shallow irrelevant micro-norms that wealthy people arbitrarily created at some point in the past in an attempt to feel better than the plebs”. Oh my god, did you see how the Prince of Twatistan ate peas using the fork in a north-westerly manner? Shame on him. His family should be embarrassed. We should hire Bill Maher’s anglo-mormon son to teach him da ways of the refined.

  150. @ManuFortis

    August 12, 2024 at 9:23 pm

For the holding of the door question, I basically do the same thing as William mentioned. But I have my own bits to add to that…

So, I’ll just glance behind me not at the door so much as about around roughly 1 meter before it. Just a small head tilt with a slight torso twist and corner of eye glance. This is enough to see if there is anyone within about a meter or two behind me. That sort of thing. It’s just obvious enough a movement to look like exactly what it should, without making anyone wonder why you are looking behind you, while being just enough a movement that can be done while still walking to keep the action fluid in your movement.

Then as I go through the door, often the glass in the door is slightly reflective. I’ll glance at that as well in case there is a last second runner kind of thing, and hold the door open for a couple seconds max or so if there is anyone who might appreciate it.

Otherwise, since all angles have been observed now at this point, I’ll just let the door close, but slowly instead of letting it slam. This is both because I just don’t like it when people slam doors so I try not to as well; and often the doors if allowed to close properly will just slowly close via their hydraulic system already attached. This gives any last second people a chance to slip through, that I might have not seen for whatever reason.

And, one last bit… I tend to be a bit quicker going up the stairs than most due to walking up escalators, or double stepping stairs to get it over with quickly. So if I see someone rushing, but then getting held up behind the rest behind me who are just slow about these things… I’ll hold the door for them anyways if it takes a few seconds longer. It might waste a moment of my time, but it possibly saved them full minutes or more depending on what’s going on for them.

For me, this is usually a thing at the bus/train stations where you could have 100 people all going up one flight of stairs, but only have maybe 2 or 3 of them go the same direction as you while the rest are going the opposite. That sort of thing. And that sort of thing can lead to missing a bus or train very easily.

And yes, I will hold the train door open for people too if need be, but only as long as needed. Never been told via the intercom by the driver to stop yet, cause it’s usually only those last second folk who are just behind me.

And if anyone’s wondering “Isn’t that a hassle to think about all of that all the time?”

Naw. It’s a fraction of a second of thought process. It’s just spacial awareness and common decency combined.

When it comes to getting people to leave, my then partner would fake falling asleep on the sofa which always worked a treat.

(UK etiquette) The one I never feel I am getting right – when you are at a restaurant and a waiter comes over to clear up/give out food etc, do you stop talking or continuing talking?

I personally always stop talking because I feel that continuing a conversation makes it like we don’t value the waiter if we are continuing like they’re not there. But then I always worry that it gives they impression of WE ARE WAITING FOR YOU TO GO BEFORE WE CONTINUE WITH WHAT WE ARE DOING

    What’s the right way?

Also are you supposed to thank you after everything, or one big thank you at the end? For example, if they pour water for everyone and then wine, I always thank after both. Better to say thank you too much is better than not enough right????

I gotta say eating a burger like that I see as rude

  178. @RolfXD501

    August 14, 2024 at 6:24 pm

Etiquette is the formalized rules of politeness of a culture or society, the way you stir your tea doesn’t really matter that much but if you want to show your respect to someone you have the option to choose to follow the recommended formalized rules.
The most important aspect of etiquette is in knowing the formal rules to be a good host and a good guest, and choosing to apply these rules as a sign of respect. It’s never “necessary” to wear a suit, but wearing a suit in front of a client for example shows that you know that that is a professional way of dressing and would like to present yourself professionally.

If you ever don’t know the proper etiquette just ask, laughing or being rude to someone for not knowing the etiquette is very rude and not following proper etiquette. Being honest in the limits to your knowledge and showing your willingness to learn will almost always get you further in life and shine better on you as a person.

Two major errors. 1. It is very rude to “Deconstruct” a sandwich unless you have a medical issue that requires it, eating a sandwich with utensils is a major faux pax, the way the sandwich is presented affects the taste, and you are showing massive disrespect to the cook, you don’t care about the quality of your food or their efforts. Having a drink before guests arrive is extremely rude and shows you don’t value their time or company, perhaps it is ok if that is the message you are trying to present.

Not sure about other places, but in America, it seems like saying “Please” has faded away due to it being interpreted as a harsh/snobbish way to emphasize what you’re asking for, but it all depends on the context.

If you’re asking someone to pass something at the table, “please” seems perfectly normal.

If you’re asking someone to stop doing something, it comes off as more rude than simply asking without it.

Opinion on correct door holding distance: It’s not just rules based on tradition, the door can make traversing through the doors more efficient for a group. The point at which a door is held longer than the other would save time, is probably the cutoff distance, unless there would be some physical difficulty for the next person to also account for.

Humorously, I had a significant other half my size, but we would hold the door for each other. It wasn’t gender equality chivalry, it was efficiency. Because the first person to the door would have to pause their motion to open it, and the second person would have to pause their motion to not run into the first person during that pause, if the first person travelled through the door first. And then often another pause at the second door. So only effort would be saved for the follower, but not time. If the second person entered first, then held the second door, it’s significantly faster for both people. And most doors aren’t heavy enough for the pull to outweigh the time. Any subsequent travelers could have the door passed to them rather than held, for time efficiency.

I kind of hate this guy, but I also find some hilarious about him. I think if you put him in some crazy situations it could be very entertaining. Like a Mongolian wedding lol, trying to enforce etiquette will the brides father is castrating a goat. Also, that hairline has to be some sort of etiquette violation..

The cutting with a knife thing was something I found out a few years ago and I was surprised to realize that I actually do it the British way despite being an American. I’m somewhat ambitious though so I just never put any thought into setting down the knife or fork before reading about it.

haha it’s so funny to hear the etiquette guy say showing up a few minutes late is good. I’ve also always done this because I can remember hating people who show up like right on time. Obviously it depends on whats going on, but if your just coming over to hangout, its odd to be punctual.

To get guests to leave my grandfather used to walk into his room, come ou wearing pijamas and brushing his teeth. I thought that was brilliant.
