J—> Max Slaughter. (Ok I’ll continue the video now. ^_^)
Edit after watching: Wow this guy is so personable and knowledgeable! Another hit for Wired finding him! He reminds me of Dr. Glaucomflecken’s ER doc and ortho character… combined! Also, I’m truly grateful for your explanation of sprains. I was concerned about mine, but now I know this is definitely just the ligaments, it should heal more quickly. Thank you!

You guys should get an economist for this type of thing next. I had an amazing economics teacher in college when I thought it would be the most boring thing ever. I’m sure it would be just as fun seeing someone talk about economics on here. And with the way things are now, it might be a relevant subject!

Watching this with a broken ankle… 🙁 I think my toes where the ankle is broken/fractured has that ischemia. they hurt when I put my foot in certain position like it’s drying, burning, the muscles are straining sensation. I am scared that my ankle will be never the same and will never heal properly.

You do not need to be trained to use an AED, they talk you through what you need to do to administer care! If someone collapses its always a good idea to grab the nearest AED, you cannot shock the patient if they don’t need it, the machine won’t allow it.
So if it’s not needed, it’ll just be replaced back in the cabinet, if it IS needed it could save a life

When I dislocated my shoulder, it hurt so much I passed out. When the doctor put it back in for me, I nearly passed out again.
If you are asking people on Twitter, using your smartphone, chances are, you haven’t dislocated your shoulder.

    Great video!
But I would never tell people “the most painful thing you’ve ever felt”. Many with chronic pain don’t seek proper medical attention because their pain scale is too high to use as a guage for severity of the injury.

A pullback in the cryptocurrency market is normal when it happens and in my opinion it’s a great time to invest or copy. I still think long-term cryptocurrency investors won’t have to worry, as the medium and long term should be good for the rapidly expanding sector. I want to thank Thomas Andrew’s who have been with me through ups and downs, showing great effort and trust, but also tenacity when it comes to tradin. I will add funds and continue to open new positions in crypto, ETFs and stocks, the goal is to grow with the right reputation.. have made over 11 btc frm day tradn with Thomas Andrew’s insights and signals in less than 2 Months…he’s very accurate and always yields a great positive return on investment…

    CW: self harm

LMFAO I had a wildly unexpected PTSD response to my teenaged self harm (needed stitches after reaching the fat layer) triggered by the stitches question. Not pushing for a content warning or anything (I wouldn’t have heeded one anyway because I really wasn’t expecting any response to stitches); it just helps to offset the emotional response if I externalize it.

I knew immediately that I had broken my left humerus, I heard a loud crack, and even though it was paralysed and I couldn’t move it, I could feel a “phantom limb”. I tried to bring my arm up to my face; I really felt like I was moving my arm, but it was just hand down by my side. Also, it wasn’t that painful at first. It didn’t really start hurting for a few hours. I guess adrenaline. Went to A&E and got some x-rays, painkillers and a temporary sling. I was told to go to the Orthopaedic department the next day. There they gave me a strap with metal bars and velcro that I was to keep my upper in and a sling to hang my arm vis my wrist down by my stomach. Was no need for surgery, resetting or anything. It was a spiral fracture, and they told me it was the easiest fracture to heal. After a few months, my arm was as good as new and actually became more flexible. Now I can bend my arm behind my head completely to the other side. I couldn’t do that before and still can’t with my other arm.

I’ve wondered for a couple years if I have CTE. I haven’t had 17 concussions (numerous though, but not sure how many) but I’ve definitely been knocked out, been diagnosed with at least one severe concussion, had neurological effects I think I’m mostly over after 25ish years, and have some symptoms starting in my late 30s or so. I’ve bashed my nose a few times (baseball, wrestling, firefighting–I apparently find novel ways to mash my face) but none were accompanied by unconsciousness or obvious brain trauma. I know there isn’t a way to diagnose it before death but I hear some progress is being made using MRIs or fMRIs. Of course, that’s out of pocket to pay for those, so I’ll just have to wait and see how things go.

Trains hitting pedestrians typically involve some gross stuff. Arms, legs, feet, head, torsos. It’s gnarly. Worse than car wrecks for the most part (and no, for those who are fans of big vehicles because they think they’re safer than small cars, you’re wrong. Small cars are safe and also allow you to avoid impacts in the first place, either via agility or better braking).

An IM Rodding for femur fractures is brutal. I’m an OR Nurse, and major orthopedic surgery is just like carpentry, no kidding! Mallets, saws, drills, reamers, screw drivers….just like carpentry except it’s on the body’s frame. As far as cardiac arrest and the use of an AED, the AED unit will give out loud instructions so anyone can use it….you don’t need to know how, it’ll tell you exactly what to do…pretty cool! Doctor, you did a great job answering these questions thoroughly, and in terms everyone can understand 🙂

I fractured my elbow. Took 3 visits to figure out it was broken. The xrays showed a fracture but they didnt want to diagnose it as such because I “wasnt in enough pain” but the last set of xrays clearly showed I had broken it. It didnt hurt all the time but if I lifted anything that weighed more than a phone it started to hurt. If i bumped in to something it HURT. So basically you may not think you broke it because its just uncomfortable. My husband eventually was like I think you need to go to the doctor because this is not normal for you which is the only reason I went. For me to show any pain or signs of sickness when Im not feeling well something has to be really wrong. Doctor was like ok Im just going to assume if you say its “uncomfortable” that you are at a 3 or 4 on a normal pain scale.

Wait, American AEDs attach a pad to the back? In the uk one is on the shoulder and one on the opposite side on the trunk but both pads attach to the patients front. They also have clear prerecorded spoken instructions that detect when you have done a particular part before they move on to the nextso you’re not fumbling around wondering whats going on as much

  302. KaylaChan90

    July 18, 2022 at 9:20 pm

And stopped caring time he said doctor google….. Yes some people google things and go with the first result and misdiagnose themselves, that IS a problem, and I understand that must be frustrating when it happens for doctors. But when google is LITERALLY THE MOST ACCESSABLE SOURCE TO GET TO WEBSITES WITH ACTUAL MEDICAL INFORMATION. People don’t go “ah yes the URL for the medical study I need to look for that connects to my symptoms, I know it off the top of my head” NO THEY HAVE TO SEARCH! I have had a doctor say “Don’t listen to doctor google that won’t help you”, run the tests (which I know they have to do reguardless to make sure that’s not an issue, not complaining about that trust) and then suggest the same exact thing looking up legit medical websites told me to do to help situation until meds given kicked in. So yeah, if a doctor or nurse’s default response to “I looked up information” is saying “doctor google” proceed with caution and if it’s serious get a second opinion if possible.

DON’T POP BAD DISLOCATIONS BACK IN YOURSELF. I have a dislocation problem and minor ones I’ve been taught be my orthopedic doc to reset myself. I reset a bad one in high school (teenager hubris) and tore my rotator cuff. Soft tissue can get caught in there and not being able to see the insides can cause those to get badly damaged. <3

Growing up my mom was a healthcare professional and NEVER took us to the doctor for anything. Even pretty big cuts and lacerations what she’d usually do is just clean the wound and dress it or put a steri strip on it. Now that I’m older I see people gettigg stitches for things I thought were minor and going to the doctor over EVERYTHING or even worse going to the ER and wasting resources.

  439. Butt Nugget

    July 28, 2022 at 11:21 pm

2:47 Not necessarily. Some people don’t feel pain the same way. I broke my hand and for several hours it just felt kinda slightly bruised but was apparently a bad break that almost needed surgery. Some people break bones and don’t even notice it and can even move or put weight on the injury and not feel anything’s wrong… Also it’s common for people to go into shock and not notice the pain as much, but instead feel very cold.

PLEASE call 911 if someone is dying! The language at the end of defibrillator question: “Ask for an AED or call 911” scares me. An AED is an excellent easy tool used by any rando person (it even talks to you) to keep someone alive (along with CPR) till first responders arrive. But it’s not magical! “How did these heal before modern surgery.” As an archaeologist it’s amazing the level of partially healed trauma on bones that people just had to live with. Injuries like those are a big reason we know that past societies often did take care of disabled members of the community past their ability to do physical labour.

A lot of the questions come down to people not wanting to go to the doctors and hoping they can treat themselves- probably because of the cost of healthcare in America- wonder how many people avoid the doctors and let a minor injury or complaint evolve into a catastrophe because of profiteering in healthcare? Sad. What a pathetic system, when you hear cases like a woman begging not to have an ambulance called after getting her leg trapped between a train and a subway platform, even though her bone is visible- because it would bankrupt her and destroy her family, you have to feel sad. Hey, at least the hospitals, ambulance services and drug companies are profitable, all that matters I guess.

    10/10 for the bubbly characteristics

I’m just going to put this out there. My goal is to become one of these wired experts. I’m a (child) neurologist (admittedly still a newbie) and would love to do a “Brain 🧠 support ” episode.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT use an AED if you don’t know how to do CPR. Unlike those things you see in movies on the ER, an AED will NOT restart a heart.
To stop fibrillation, the first step is to STOP THE HEART which is what this machine does. To restart it, YOU need to perform CPR. If your are trained, you know it’s very hard to do it unless you have at least one other trained person and have good stamina. If you didn’t know that, you are not trained so do not attempt. You will kill that person.

Oooh, I guess that femur rod stays in the bone (well, what else… they’re not gonna break the bone again, and pull the rod out.). That makes the femur a super-femur (That is, assuming the rod makes it stronger in total). How much force would it take to break this super-femur?

I was an ER tech. You need a certain sense of humor to deal with the homeless, the elderly, the burnt crispy, the kid with a mostly severed finger to those who have a SEMI and those who try to pour hot coffee on other waiting room patients.

ok but like I have a chronic knee condition and hypermobility, I know how to pop my dislocated and partially dislocated knees back into place – and I always get MRIs asap to make sure I’ve done it right. if I had to go to the ER every time I had a dislocation, I’d never leave 😂😂
