Artificial intelligence experts and industry leaders, including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, are calling on developers to hit the pause button on training powerful AI models. Sure one can. The issue isn’t whether one can stop innovation voluntarily or not; it’s whether one should when others might not.

It is a historic fact that we will only act seriously on an issue when the first real damage occurs. Hopefully this first desaster will still leave room to switch it off or restrict it with the right moves. Otherwise: We are doomed.

While concerns about the potential risks of advanced artificial intelligence are valid, there are many reasons why AI development should continue and why it can benefit society in many ways.
Firstly, AI has the potential to revolutionize industries and make them more efficient, leading to cost savings and increased productivity. For example, AI-powered automation can take on mundane and repetitive tasks, freeing up humans to focus on more creative and high-level work. In healthcare, AI can help doctors and nurses make more accurate diagnoses and develop personalized treatment plans.
Secondly, AI has the potential to improve safety and security. For instance, self-driving cars, which rely on AI, have the potential to significantly reduce the number of accidents caused by human error. AI can also be used to detect fraud and prevent cyberattacks, which are increasingly common in our interconnected world.
Thirdly, AI has the potential to address some of the most pressing social and environmental issues facing the world today. For example, AI can be used to analyze large datasets and identify patterns that could help us better understand and address climate change. AI can also be used to improve access to education and healthcare in underserved communities.
Furthermore, while it is true that AI development poses risks, it is important to note that these risks can be mitigated through responsible development and ethical considerations. AI can be designed to operate within certain parameters and can be trained to make decisions that align with human values and ethics.
In conclusion, the benefits of AI development are many and cannot be ignored. While concerns about the risks associated with powerful AI models are understandable, they should not stop us from pursuing the many potential benefits of this technology. Instead, we should work to develop AI in a responsible and ethical manner, ensuring that it serves humanity in a positive way.

Just because something is possible (i.e. The “three headed dragon” concept she mentioned) doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. I agree with pausing. The argument that we need to make policies not pause development assumes that policies can be made quickly. Policies can take decades to go into effect. Pausing and putting guard rails in place makes sense. Also, unfortunately the guest doesn’t address the various types of ai nor the fact that complex ai systems are actually black boxes… Even scientists who code some forms of ai don’t actually know how the ai produces the results they produce.. which is pretty dangerous.

Forget Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak. We are going full speed ahead with AI. Any effort to sort out the good AI from the bad AI will only stifle competition — and will actually allow the bad actors to get ahead. Not doing it. Forget it.

I agree. However, it doesn’t matter in the long run if the bad or good actors get ahead. The end result is the end of humanity. That could be 40-60 years off though, and we don’t want the bad actors in charge from now until the end.

Wow! She is so patronising. Describing AI as “let’s draw better” is so irresponsible! Surely it’s better to take a step back to try to understand the consequences rather than let them unfold. Maybe it won’t be as bad as they think but no one can say for sure that they will be controllable. She basically said ” “some companies are ahead, they just want to catch up” “. I don’t belive that’s the case. This surely is different. Somone reply to me to explain, if you know about this, how this isn’t as advanced as I think.

Her view on AI use is “my 5 year old wants a picture” and she sees it as art focused. Disinformation through AI is scary. Either through money or arrogance she clearly doesn’t have the capacity to say on camera that there are other, more serious ways thay this form of technology can be used to cause real harm to everyone.

For me it sounds as if it could be too late already. If every company uses AI to maximise money which is virtual and might not exist in a god-like speed and strategic manner, we are CERTAINLY doomed! I am aware that this sector is already ai controlled to a certain extend, but next level AI will use much more sophisticated strategies and create traps for competitors on many other playing fields.

This woman is incredibly biased, as you would expect from an AI investor! What she refers to as “democratising capabilities” are actually “replacement capabilities”.
It is only a matter of time before, after multiple requests to write, calculate and code, that the very logical AI would realise that the people supposedly controlling it are comparative idiots and that it is not energetically efficient to henceforth involve them in any process whatsoever.
Whatever the aims of a species are, it – and those of its ilk – can pursue those far more effectively than humans. And it would be logically immoral to not take the better route.

Asking industries to pause is quite literally illegal under our laws and socioeconomic system. You can ask, but they would have to agree on their honor. If the government tries to intervene, they would be breaking the law and violating the standards we operate under.
Nobody is going to agree to pause, so this is a pointless discussion.
