  7. @Stefan-lb4sf

hm….(speaking as an PT and MT that is trying to stay up-to-date)
almost agreeing to most things she said.
I have a few complaints: Sometimes she isn’t up to today’s medicine.
also: she is right about cortisone being an anti-inflammatory, but doesnt’ say it is degenerating your ligaments and tendons, which in the case of rotator cuff injuries makes the problem in the short term better, but long-term worse. Considering long-term…. that is a non-issue. Dr won’t operate until it is ruptured. In that time they are referred to PT, which is annoying AF, because you can’t directly influence the outcome. But there is the crux…. both PT and Dr should be more open and honest about it; the patient is in a flux state.
As far as therapeutic further education goes….. there is much pseudo-science happening. I remain to this day in the firm stance: If it heals, it is right. Placebo be Placebo

PS: okay it is late for me:
I can and I will put studies to the things I said, if wanted
PSS: i can only speak for my own country:
about 75% of Patients benefit of PT intervention
and 25% of Patients of all have the benefit if immediate help
about 25% patients are parked with u´s….. and no one really knows why they are in therapy….but that is my country.
    have fun

This was a terrible episode tbh. Not because answers weren’t great but the questions were too broad and simple like asking ‘what is that mean?’ which would easily be answered with a few seconds of googling. Instead I would like to see more questions about certain sports/activities that could at least give people more valuable information about Physical Therapy.

What do you do if multiple doctors have suggested you do PT for chronic pain, but you’ve gone before, and they insisted on keeping you around 7 to 8 outta 10 on the pain scale? (Was legitimately was surprised to hear this doc say 2 or 3 is the PREFERRED amount!) Which traumatized you, and now you can’t go into one of their offices without having a panic attack… asking for a friend :/

  27. @TM-gh5ms

    April 23, 2025 at 10:56 am

Becoming a PT involves earning a doctoral degree and being board certified, because there are so many different disciplines and jargon to consider (e.g. pharmacology, physics, lifestyle factors, and various branches of biology). Doctors are human, and make mistakes. Minor confusions are inescapable.

I’ve had a bum knee since high school; can just get kind of sore and tired. I was never a competitive athlete so the doc told me surgery wasn’t needed unless it got really bothersome. If I was running or something, sometimes I’d wear a knee sleeve. I have a friend that’s had 3 knee surgeries suggest KT tape. I’m always skeptical of that kind of stuff; copper bands and all that stuff. KT seemed like wizardy Gwyneth Paltrow stuff. But I was going to do a Tough Mudder and gave it a try. It really worked. It felt like a really good knee sleeve. No pain during or after. I’m sure it won’t help every condition, but for knee support, I found it really effective.

Why is it that a PT with a doctorate still writes their name followed by PT, DPT? If you’re a DPT, we know you’re a PT. Also, what is it that a DPT knows or can do that a PT can’t? Or is this just another iteration of putting “Dr.” in front of everyone for billing purposes, or just so you can say that you’re a doctor?

@@johnieblaze4079what’s cringe is using titles to devalue one of the most effective treatment options. Patients are well aware of specialization and the difference between a doctor and a physician. Doctors of physical therapy are professionals with a doctorate specializing in recovery and in my experience they have far more experience in that regard than most physicians.

Should probably change the title to “PT answers questions”. I’m a PTA and no PT I’ve ever met refers to themselves as a doctor, it’s misleading and confusing to patients.

    • @definitelynotcole

      April 28, 2025 at 1:20 am

Some PTs don’t have doctorates some do. The board requires new PT to have a doctorate which requires more schooling and debt. A doctor of physical therapy is the official title.

Ask yourself why the industry wants PT doctors to not refer to themselves as such. It’s not confusing for patients, they know doctors are specialized, in addition most PTs know a lot more about recovery than most physicians and likely know the outcomes of local treatments better than most local physicians as they’re actually seeing the outcomes.

They would know locally who to suggest for treatment, how to prepare for treatment, the risks for the treatment, and potential alternatives to invasive treatments. If we’re going to play a game of credentials PT’s who have earned their doctorates deserve the title. The rest of the industry doesn’t want them to be able to use the title because it hurts the ability for physical therapy as a profession to negotiate and advocate for their importance.

    • @ChetRipley419

      April 28, 2025 at 5:02 am

@ you don’t have to explain it to me, as I stated above I’m a PTA. It is absolutely misleading to patients, especially in the acute care setting. I’m guessing you’re an outpatient PT by your tone.

My ears need physical therapy after listening to this for a few minutes…

I’ve done PT for osteoarthritis in a shoulder and it was so helpful. We focused on strengtening my back as much as the range of motion.

Well, this was a lot less impressive than most WIRED Answers. Did she actually say anything meaningful? I didn’t hear it. PT done poorly can do more harm than good.

I’ve definitely got a bad back!

OK, so a ‘Board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist’ is not a doctor, and people who do this don’t earn a doctorate or spend nearly enough time at their education to have anything close to the knowledge that an actual physician has. Calling someone like this a ‘doctor’, or them calling themselves a doctor, is just an arrogant scam. Physical therapists are technicians, operating under physician orders, and dressing the job description up with a fake title doesn’t change a thing.

If you’re hearing properly, she said she’s a doctor of physical therapy, and “also a board certified blah blah blah”. You can just rewatch it man.

      That’s random. Explain yourself, human.

@SuviTuuliAllan  So you didn’t notice the klingon style ridge on her forehead?

“But … if it makes you feel better … why not?”

OK, so that’s exactly as applicable to herbs and magnets as it is to cupping. Total cop out answer. You should go ahead and add tarot readings to your list of therapies too.
