If you are cursed with rush than you shall stay online and chat with your local dermatologist about a prescrprtion regarding rush. Than you will have a online recipe but you still need to go at farmacy and pay for medicine because is not free unless the online local demnts association does not donate you to you for free@@Docmain3

i wouldve asked if we really need 5-15min of sunlight w/o sunscreen to get that vitamin d? and do we all need it or just elders need it? i need to know cause im very sensitive to the sun and cant be w/o sunscreen for one minute help!

    • @thehomeschoolinglibrarian

      February 13, 2024 at 3:41 pm

We all need it. Babies are often given vitamin d drops to help prevent vitamin d deficiency and adults need it too.

    • @mdml0

      February 13, 2024 at 6:27 pm

No. Sunscreen isn’t a perfect shield even at spf 100. You will still get vitamin d with the small amount that passes through. Most sunscreen users don’t apply enough and regularly throughout the day anyway.

    RE: white cast for POC
If you use mineral sunscreen, apply the actually required amount that everything thinks is way too much, let it dry for the required 15-20mins, then dust off excess.

The white will literally disappear and you won’t even know you ever used sunscreen, unless you sweat it out later.

(Yes you will look like a scary ghost doing white face for 15mins, but I promise, you just gently dust it off after it drys down and you get all the protection with no white cast)

    • @mdml0

      February 13, 2024 at 6:16 pm

Not advisable. The protective sunscreen filters are the white cast because they never dissolve in the solvent. Dusting it off reduces the spf. If the sunscreen is flaky or is making you leave a dust trail minutes after application, it could either be expired or poor quality. Keep in mind majority of sunscreen user don’t apply enough sunscreen. Either go for tinted sunscreen if mineral sunscreen is preferred but want to avoid the white cast.

I live in Oslo, Norway. during winter, it’s cold, few hours of daylight and the UV-meter is always at 0. Should I still be using sunscreen during this period? And if so, why?

    • @mdml0

      February 13, 2024 at 6:23 pm

You may get away with a lower spf because indoor lighting does have some amount of UV. An emollient moisturizer with spf is perfect for the cold dry air during winters.

8:10 interestingly, this is how laser tattoo removal works. the laser targets the ink deposits and breaks them down into smaller chunks so that your body’s white blood cells can effectively metabolize them and flush them out of the body. its why people report being tired after a removal session, your body is reacting to the ink the same way it would an infection

i don’t know if anyone will read this but i use to be addicted to lip balm for so many years. i would always need to reapply it. one day i switched to using rimmel clear lip gloss and the difference is night and day. i don’t need to reapply all the time and my lips are never dry. once in a while i will use a lip balm if i don’t have my rlg and ten minutes later my lips are chapped. it really is amazing and i have been using it for years! i always order more when it gets low and i’m not even the kind of girl who would use lip gloss. if you have this issue with lip balm please try this!

Actually several people know why we have fingerprints; it provides additional grip for higher primates that have opposable thumbs, specifically for when they are in wet environments. Think tool usage in the great apes while crossing through rivers, etc.

  53. @JarrodFrates

    February 15, 2024 at 1:05 pm

Recent research suggests that tattoo ink particles are taken up by dermal macrophages, but these macrophages are stationary so the ink doesn’t move. This isolates the ink particles and reduces irritation. When the macrophages die, the ink particles are released and then recaptured by other dermal macrophages. This cycle continues on for as long as the skin is alive. Some of the ink particles are broken down over time, accounting for tattoos lightening somewhat as the skin ages, but for the most part, it stays in place. See Baranska, et al., in 2018 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

  55. @JarrodFrates

    February 15, 2024 at 1:19 pm

Fun fact on fingerprints: We dont actually know if fingerprints are unique. They *seem* to be unique, but no one has done a large enough analysis to be scientifically certain in part because the analysis has been extremely expensive. There are some studies proposed or going on to have AI review very large sets (millions or even tens of millions) to try to quantify the uniqueness, but it will be a while before even those are complete, and there may still be questions until we can review hundreds of millions of fingerprints in a single study. That raises privacy and data control concerns, though, and it may be difficult or even impossible to collect enough data to do that.

I just wish he addressed the environmental harms that some chemical ingredients in sunscreen cause. Theres good reason why hawaii has banned chemical sunscreen and only allow mineral sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens don’t kill coral.

You didnt actually answer the question about lips becoming addicted to lip balm. You said no fragrance or flavoring, but that wasn’t the question.

I have the same question. If I dont have lip balm, my lips are insanely dry. I apply it constantly and require it to be available everywhere I go. I almost missed a flight bc I lost my lip balm and absolutely had to buy some before boarding. My first answer for my 3 things on a stranded island is lip balm.

But I use plain old petroleum lip balm – no fragrance, no flavoring, just petroleum.

So…..can you answer the question? Please?

    • @singingfan

      February 17, 2024 at 12:59 pm

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Dry lips can signal dehydration.

  69. @sunny.g5070

    February 16, 2024 at 10:40 am

avoid lip balms all together, Lip balms containing ingredients like phenol, menthol and salicylic acid actually make your lips drier.

    • @singingfan

      February 17, 2024 at 1:03 pm

Instead, make sure you’re drinking plenty of water so as to not be dehydrated. Also, if needed you can use Vaseline to protect against sunburn or windburn etc in very cold temperatures.

  70. @lukastemberger

    February 16, 2024 at 11:40 am

  72. @giananina

    February 16, 2024 at 12:11 pm

i do agree with lipbalm. When I used lipbalm with flavor, I dont realised I licked my lips again and again. I re-applied more often but still get dry lips. I thought the ingredients of flavor made my lips dry, then I tried vaseline. Viola, it worked well!

My BIL insisted that chapstick was a scam and that it’s designed to provide temporary relief but later flake your lips so you apply it more. I asked him to tell me in more detail what it feels like and what it does, he proceeded to describe exactly what it’s like to be allergic to your chapstick.

    February 16, 2024 at 7:39 pm

Another fun fact about hair: Almost everyone has around the same amount of hair and humans also have almost the same amount of hair follicles as other primates. It’s just that “hairless” people have very fine, peach-fuzz-like hair, while “hairier” people (and other primates) develop that same fine hair into coarser, darker, and longer body hair due to their follicles being more sensitive to specific hormones (mostly androgen).

Esthetician here! Medical-grade skincare products can only be sold by businesses that operate under a physician’s license (ie. medical spas, dermatology clinics, etc). These products have been developed and researched to be effective, with the highest amount of active ingredients in their purest form. When people shop for over-the-counter products, they are choosing skincare that’s been “watered down” and “fool proof” so the companies that represent these products don’t get angry customers who have “self-diagnosed” what they need for their skin.

Thank you, doctor, for answering these questions! So many of them, I, too, have wondered about. The blackhead question, tattoo not wearing off, stretch marks, and those face LED masks.

Why is it that blackheads seem to increase in frequency when you start getting them out??? I never had a big problem on my forehead until I took out the few I had.

Dr Shaw I adore you but man you under-answered the lip balm question! I am 100% addicted and have tried every different type of balm. I recall Dr Maxfield and you commenting on this topic. I just know that folks who are not addicted misunderstand the issue and make assumptions…
