One of my favorite movie scenes that include a DJ is in Popstar when Jorma Taccone’s character gives a stage tour. He points to his iPod and says that Connor’s (Andy Samberg) entire set is there lol.
Also, David Guetta is right about beat matching lol. It is that easy–learned to do it on vinyl back in the late 90s.

Not a DJ but I can really recommend NSDR (Non SLeep Deep Rest) for balancing out lack of sleep. Find a youtube video or podcast with the script and just follow it while listening, it doens’t require any skills.

Beatmatching 101:
1. Match the BPM to the playing track.
2. count. 1 2 3 4, 2 2 3 4, 3 2 3 4, 4 2 3 4
3. Hit play on the 1 beat, the first part of the phrase.
4. nudge and adjust for drift
5. mix in
(Edit: If you find it difficult using the 2 2 3 4, 3 2 3 4 system of counting, you can also just count to 16. 4×4= 16 beats, 4 bars or 1 phrase)

As a working musician, I’m always amused by people who think DJs have no skill. You go do it then, buddy. All you have to do is share a corporate or private event with a bad DJ once and you see how important a skilled, prepared DJ is.

That David Guetta is a true legend and a hero, we all should know at this point. You need to respect him – even if is not your favorite artist in the world – for what he brought to music industry and especially electronic music. pretty good “interview”. my two defining moments of the past 20 years were when my dj software introduced key matching, and when i found out i could dj without headphones. i can play perfect sets just by looking at the waveforms, and they sound so much better when key-locked.

Fun fact! There’s one DJ (that I know of) that plays DJ sets without traditional CDJs or jogwheels! Madeon produces his own music but when playing a DJ set he uses a mixer and two launchpads (2 devices with 8×8 grids) to activate clips in music to mix his set! Albeit I don’t know if there’s much flexibility for freestyling a set but at the end of the day people see Madeon’s DJ sets for his sound/style.
