You’ve probably heard of CRISPR, the revolutionary technology that allows us to edit the DNA in living organisms. Biochemist and 2023 Audacious Project grantee Jennifer Doudna earned the Nobel Prize for her groundbreaking work in this field — and now she’s here to tell us about its next world-changing advancement. She explains how her team at the Innovative Genomics Institute is pioneering a brand new field of science — precision microbiome editing — that uses CRISPR in an effort to solve seemingly insurmountable problems like asthma, Alzheimer’s and climate change.
This ambitious idea is part of the Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change.

Classic science denier god believer mentality. You won’t trust something with mountains of evidence to support it, but you’ll believe in a man in the sky because a 2000+ year old book said so. Reject faith, embrace proof.

@Neithan It’s not ignorance. Even the well educated can be fearful of the speed of innovation. Once the technology is released into the world, there isn’t control of who will use it or how it will be used. You only need to look at the discovery of fusion/fission leading to atomic weapons.

It will change for the better, only when you eat correctly. That’s all the microbiome requires. The only thing wrong with out microbiome, is what we feed it. We’re poisoning ourselves and until we change that, nothing will change.

For everyone saying this is too risky, you don’t know any girls with Rett Syndrome, girls that can’t speak, can’t communicate, can’t control their hands or arms, most spend their entire lives bound in a wheelchair. Many require a feeding tube because they can’t swallow food. Appreciate the blessing of having a healthy daughter, healthy sister and cousins, and don’t block the technology that might give these Rett girls a hope for a normal life. You were lucky, some family have terribly bad luck.

This is so the company that has the patent for this GMO can benefit from the climate saving agenda in a way that put them at the top of government’s approved and subsidized products for everyone that want to be in the animal business! I personally want that to be only for the good of the planet, but I strongly dough that when the monopoly is winning, there could be people on the top that will make the decision to sacrifice profit for the future of everybody’s children…

It is hoped that CRISPR will not be used by criminals to sow doubt in a jury’s mind about DNA investigations. We also hope that the media campaign surrounding the Corona virus RNA vaccine have not been used to mitigate identity fraud investigations. To mislead investigators about the geographic origin (haplogroups) of illegal immigrants, terrorists or spies. Because if this is the case, this technique would then be put forward by interest groups or individuals to breach national security.

The other human health applications are exciting but to use these amazing tools to enable the continuation of industrial farming (burping CH4 is just one of the myriad of environmental catastrophes caused by CAFOs) is a waste of great science.

Gene editing is destroying natural biodiversity. Science CANNOT take into account all the issues, what your are suggesting is ideology. End the war to end the most dangerous threat to humanity at this time, it is not climate change.. Your technology is not applicable or acceptable on a global scale. This, like all our tech we create, will be for rich folks only. Stem Cell, Lasik, invisalign, hormone therapy, advanced pharmaceuticals, and many other procedures are so far out of reach for most of us. Lasik is the cheapest of this tech and is still over $3000.00. That means 97% of humanity cannot have this, and it’s been around for over 30 years. Greed always wins with the medical community, not helping folks.

Sounds exciting, but I can’t help to wonder how we can think we can edit a biome, of which in the presenters words we have only studied 1% of its species. You would have to expect to have unintended consequences, and these could be significant – because again in the presenters own words the changes are permanent for the animal – such as cows.

Good speech. Pretty basic but good for those who are new to it. In time it will allow humans to live on inhospitable planets while terraforming is in progress. This doesn’t even necessarily have to do with CRISPR, but there’s actually been a lot of research done on how kids who grow up in more dirty environments or certain countries don’t get diseases like ulcerative colitis, type 1 diabetes, or certain allergies. They think it’s because their immune systems get more practice dealing with different things, so it’s less likely to go haywire and attack things it’s not supposed to, (i.e allergies.) I wonder if there will come a time when all babies and toddlers will receive a routine schedule of probiotic treatments at their pediatrician appointments, right along with their vaccines. Perhaps they’d put the bacteria in candy or drinks that they would give to the kids. And maybe CRISPR might be used to make some of these treatments or at least make them better.

I wonder what if any significant differences there are in the gut microbiota between cattle that are kept in feedlots (ie dairies) where they spend their entire lives standing in feces and subsist on man made “feed” vs cattle that are raised in large open pastures and eat only grass. I would bet there are very significant differences and if we could sample and test them it would add valuable data about how gut microbiota interact both with the animal and with the food the animal consumes (less methane emissions?)

Does anyone here understand the concept of the finality of modifying the human/animal gene pool ?
    Consider…
    -CRISPER has no Genetic Antidote.
-Modified DNA can/will be passed down through future generations.
-Cross organ migration/infection within the human/animal body affecting organ viability.
    -Inter species contamination through shedding.
    -Cross species migration.
We need to consider our steps onto the future carefully, our demise can be around every corner and the perpetrator is likely to be us.

It never makes me happy to see how much effort goes into maintaining and creating more avenues for wealth inequality (including health inequality) in the world. Because to me, it doesn’t seem ethical or rational to make meat farms more accessible for larger herds, which is what she is advertising. Or how we have no clue what the effects long term will be on the evolution of diseases and such. I mean who would have access to crispr anyways, if it’s anything like any other medical tech (especially high tech), it will be only accessible to the wealthy. And with climate change, she just virtue signaled by mentioning the wealthy (being she’s one of them), the deal with climate change is 50% of all toxins/emissions are produced by the top 10% in terms of wealth and how does this change that, it anything crispr will just enable it more. I hoped she would talk not just about CRISPR’s applications, but also about its advancements. I heard a couple of years ago, they still had problems with achieving 100% accuracy and it was also really expensive to edit large parts of genome. Therefore it was limited to tiny, precise changes rather than complete bioengineering, that would take a long time with current methods. Also if you can, I would love to hear about those 0.50$ DNA tests, where you just drop a sample into a playing card sized sheet of plastic and a large grid of genes starts coloring based upon the presence and absence of genes. It sounded like a ground breaking invention as you could test for presence of hundreds of genes in humans in very short time and at large scale, possibly allowing us to sequence everyone’s genome for possible disease predispositions, intellectual potential as well as genetic strength and endurance of patient’s muscles. Sadly I didn’t hear about it in years.

I just spent a long time reading the research on human microbiome. Diet has most certainly shown to be effective on impacting the microbiome to effect human health. In particular Plant based diets are obviously the most natural and healthy in terms of microbiome and good health, while animal products and meat are obviously harmful and malevolent in terms of health. All those health problems she mentions, connections with asthma, dementia, etc, those have a negative correlation with plant diets and positive correlation with meat. I’m sure what she is doing may be useful at some point, but it feels like using a .50 cal sniper rifle to kill a mosquito and if that what your trying to sell us as mosquito repellent, than i question your motives.

The focus on methane emissions is such a red herring. I did not find this talk effective or convincing.

This is of the devil, playing God will backfire majorly

If you think these scientists know it all your foolish, their actions have the potential to set off an entire chain of events that could easily result in the government creating viruses that can attack specific groups of people and edit their DNA as they see fit
Who do you think will ultimately own the devices and or make the decisions on how it’s used and who it impacts??

These people are evil in nature but seemingly good because….. They seem the part

So far humans have “solved” the problem of global warming by kicking it down the road.
World leaders have done a great job of collaborating on setting goals they never had any intention to meet.

I am an agronomist, she is hiding the danger. Plants are devoid of a crucial abilitie – mobility, Because of that we are able to contain the GMO and prevent any possible uncontrolled reproduction leading to unexpected and harmful genetic mutation.
The same cannot be said for bacteria or animals.
P.S THE mention of climate is A WOKE “dog whistle” / virtue signaling of the worst kind.

Mankind was not allowed to eat from the tree of life. Not because we couldn’t, but because God knew that those who seek power would never relinquish power. Until mankind is ruled by one who knows our hearts and minds and delivers true justice with love and compassion, we can never be free. That time is coming. Open your hearts and release your preconceived notions about Jesus. Seek him, he is waiting for you.

In the Mesozoic Era when dinosaurs lived it was one of the most populated time for species. Didn’t they produce methane…. didn’t they fart? Why now cow farts are affecting climate change and It didn’t back than? … sooo misleading!

The serendipitous discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 occurred in 2007 by two French scientists working for the Danish yogurt company described the CISPR system. They were, in my view, the giants’ shoulders were Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna follow up that line of research and published it in 2012. In the name of safety this technology should be regulated by the state, and use in a case-by-case basis. This technology in the hands of the “invisible market” would be an ethical mistake of great proportions. Let’s not roll on that slippery slope.

it would be better to reduce animal based food intake by certain % instead of editing a calf’s genome 🙂

Is this really the solution or is this another experience in science?

What do we really know about DNA and what about Epigenetics?

As long science can’t replicate a single straw of grass from scratch, we should be very careful using those things.

We now start to understand what happened and still happens after those mrna shots.
Do human really need to play like god?

How about instead of all of this complex science to change the inside guts of a cow to reduce methane let’s just stop factory farming cows? Basically, stop eating cows. The meat is bad for you anyway. Stop the circle of violence. Science can’t save you from the bad karma. Non of this addresses the environmental impact to the waterways and land use from factory farming cattle either.

Editing the biome of an entire species just sounds like you’re asking for trouble. One mistake/miscalculation and you could wipe out an entire species, including ours.

Microbiomes create methane. Yep, bacteria fart it out into intestines as a waste product upon digesting food. Then the animal (including you) fart that out. A refried fart. A little double doody, so to speak.
