  11. @Cymricus

    April 1, 2025 at 7:05 pm

please don’t call a heckler narcissistic. it’s true but so unfunny. instead, effortlessly bury them with comeback like joan rivers. she would lie about stuff in the moment and gut punch those hecklers so hard.

one guy got offended at a joke about disabled people and she said her son was in a wheelchair even tho it was a downright lie, but the room laughed uncontrollably at the fact that she shut down the heckler

  37. @JelloTalks

    April 2, 2025 at 1:22 pm

Why can’t they just roll the two drink minimum into the price of the ticket? Like instead of paying $20 a ticket with a 2-drink minimum just charge $40 and give me a $20 bar tab included? The forcing you to order drinks is why it feels like a scam.

  53. @bijibadness

    April 3, 2025 at 11:29 am

a joke only goes too far when it’s tasteless about the subject AND, most critically, it’s not funny.

the beauty of comedy is the beauty of any artform built around creating new combinations of words expressing ideas: it’s virtually limitless and there can never be a definite standard about what’s acceptable and what’s not because we haven’t _heard_ everything and we never can.

just when we think we’ve heard it all before and there can NEVER be a funny joke about ______, along CAN come a joke about that very thing that’s _so_ well-crafted and unique that it gets us to laugh DESPITE our rock-solid opinions on the matter.

that’s comedy’s greatest asset: it’s a reflex, not a taste. we can and DO laugh in _spite_ of ourselves. we do it all the time. truly Great Comedy throws our own tastes right in our own faces and makes us temporarily forget what we think we like or don’t like.

comedy and writing is the art of the infinite! you can’t say _anything_ for certain about anything because there’s no limit on what someone COULD write. it just takes time, talent and fortune – anything can be made funny with just the right words. absolutely anything.

no, I don’t have those words. but somebody COULD. that’s the whole point. peace and be well to everyone out there

5:29 Most comedy clubs I’ve been to recently have a two *item* minimum rather than a two drink minimum. That makes much more sense to me because not everyone drinks and it just encourages overconsumption if the baseline is two drinks.

  114. @Toidal

    April 5, 2025 at 6:08 pm

There are no limits to comedy, you just have to make your audience laugh. However if you want to joke on something that’s inherently controversial in the moment, mofo it better be good. You can’t bank on low hanging fruit for those topics.

  115. @danricode

  117. @Zebra.Lionfish

    April 5, 2025 at 11:16 pm

I find myself laughing early at jokes but only when I can imagine the story/scene the comedian is setting up and can already see the funny part that is about to be told or you can read in their body language that the punch line is coming. Every comedian seems to talk about every day situations that the audience can also relate to and has probably happen to themselves

Finally went to some good comedy shows in NYC – went to the Greenwich village comedy club – HIGHLY recommend – cuz the Cellar is often sold out – it’s right around the corner and affordable and really funny

Second the thing about not trying to be funnier than the comic – people who did looked dumb 😅 it’s weird how it works – a couple people genuinely said some really funny stuff but it’s rare

Great video. It is like a language. I learned Spanish and Russian and knew I would probably never be totally fluent like my native language but if people understand me that is all that matters, they might comment on my American accent and certain things I do but overall it is fine. Comedy is an art, you have clean comics, ones who do dark humor, etc. But it takes skill. Anybody can think of something awful to say. But you need the timing, delivery, punchline, sarcasm, know how to weave the joke and be clever. There is no way really to go too far in comedy because it is comedy. If it is not funny to you that doesn’t make it not comedy just not your thing.

The two drink minimum IS a scam. If the service is the show, have it be paid for on entry, with the price available up-front, like any other theatre. Saying it’s free to get in, then we’re going to hit you with a two drink minimum where you have no idea how much we’ve marked up the prices of our drinks until you’ve already “agreed” to buy them, is the very definition of a hustle.

Just be honest and reasonable. People will support you if you openly say “this is the service, here’s the price we need to charge to provide it”. Hiding costs and scamming your customers is what gets people to bad-mouth the club and give it a bad reputation.

9:20 As an European, I would say: if a thousand completely unfamiliar people in one room say yes to you in perfect synchronization, it means they are fully invested in your speech and really listening. Great response overall.
And don’t mind about a facial expression – we’re just relaxt

I’m so happy he pointed out Nikki Glazer’s golden globes speach. You are working against the cringe that is so heavily attached to a comedian’s opening monologue at award shows and big events in general. And she handled it with such grace and it flowed so perfectly. There was only like one awkward moment in the lead up until the Sandler Chalamet moment, but even that just felt human and like everyone was there together not just her or just the audience and a wall<3 Glad he liked it too (sorry for the 100 years of solitude on this. Just love both comedian's v much)

There is one thing I found odd at a comedy show…I was seeing Nikki Glaser at a fairly small venue. I’m pretty sure it was pre-covid. Anyways, she wore mom jeans and a t shirt. Just seemed weird because of how obsessed she is with her looks.
