About the checkmate thing. In Germany we still say it like the Persian root, we just write it as “Schachmatt” and chess is called “schach” in Germany. So maybe schach also referred to the game itself in Persian

Watching Levy on this show compared to Garry Kasparov on this show 4 years ago is hilarious. Just comparing their character and manner in answering questions is funny.
    “Knight or bishop?”
Levy: *answers question in fun, lighthearted colorful manner*
    Garry: “…depends.”

When England had no GMs, I was at Leeds University and our chess club had a Yugoslav GM that noone in the general chess community knew was there. He was freakishly good and surpassed an IM by a long shot. We went to play in the Edinburgh Open that year and he easily defeated 5 active and former British champions in Tal-like style. That year England got its first GM – he was about to be kicked out of college for not studying and playing chess, but when he became a GM the university gave him an honorary degree instead.

@GothamChess Knights ride horses. In battle, in medieval times, they (along with the King) were the only ones to have the resources to own a war horse. Could you illustrate a knight in another way that would make the piece instantly identifiable and not confuse it with, say, the bishop?

15:22 Correction for the captions: You transcribed it as “Zwischenzug” instead of “Zugzwang”. They’re both German chess terms, but completely different tactics. Zugzwang basically means “forced to make a move” (at the detriment of your own position), whereas Zwischenzug means “in-between move” (which is basically a stalling move that improves your position before you play an expected move)

Did Levy really just say that piece color does not give one side an advantage? WHAT?

Not only does white have an advantage, but at the highest levels of chess, that advantage of going first is so monumental that black is happy with a draw in like 99% of the games.

if you have the black color the best you can hope for is a draw,

  78. TheAlmightyKamina

    December 16, 2022 at 11:19 pm

I don’t know if anybody else has commented on it yet, but the captions at 15:25 say “That puts black in what’s called a zwischenzug”

Zwischenzug is not what Levy said, and means something else. Levy said “zugzwang” which means what he said it means. Zwischenzug is “a chess tactic in which a player, instead of playing the expected move (commonly a recapture), first interposes another move posing an immediate threat that the opponent must answer, and only then plays the expected move,” or in other words an in-between move.

Here in greece half the names are different. The knight is called “alogo” or “ippos”, which translates to horse, the bishop is called “axiomatikos”, which is like an army enforcer or smth, the Rook is “pyrgos”, which means tower, castling is “rokέ”, which doesntmean anything

  86. Dillon

    December 16, 2022 at 11:51 pm

I feel like Deep Blue beating Gary didn’t really represent “AI overtaking man” officially. I mean, the computer had a good deal of data about both chess generally, & ALL of Gary’s revorded games. So it knew everything that was possible to know about it’s opponent and his playstyle… and it STILL lost the first time! Whereas Gary went in blind right. He didn’t like study the algorithm and it’s past games at all.

People think that chess is all about knowing the game state many moves ahead of time but that really isn’t the case until you are at a high level. Familiarising your self with certain openings and positions will take you quite far in amateur games.

Already learned something in the first 30 seconds. In German, the word for checkmate is “Schachmatt” which is pronounced very similar to the Persian way. Schach is also the name of chess in German, i.e. the king’s game, although it’s not the title of royalty here.

What’s the point in playing Chess anymore? The game has been solved computationally and no human will ever be able to beat a computer. I always found the amount of chess apps on the app store to be infuriating because of this. Why play a game you can never, ever win?

  178. eXis FOHDR

    December 20, 2022 at 9:02 pm

    Knight vs Bishop….
Knight in the center of the board can attack 8 spaces. A Bishop in the center of the board can attack 14 spaces. However, the movement of the bishop is much easier to restrict or pin. Knights can be pinned, but are much more difficult to restrict the movement of. Knights are the only non pawn piece that can move as the first move. Using knights in end game proves to be more of a challenge than that of using bishops.

Bothh are very useful, but I would have to award more value to a bishop simply because of their mid/end game strength.

I’m probably the billionth hyacktually guy to mention this, but I’d guess the Knight is a horse because knights are indelibly linked to their mounts. The German for ‘knight’ is Ritter, or “rider” as we might say in English. As much as their iconic plate armor, the knight is associated with his horse.
