Levy forgot to mention that the games at the park are where so much trash talking happens!

Also, i know Levy keeps saying that there’s no correlation between chess and intelligence but it’s so hard to not have chess make me feel like an idiot most of the time.

  7. Harry Crab

    November 16, 2023 at 12:48 pm

en passant was actually created at the time when pawn could move twice. to speed up the game

Why is a food blogger talking about chess?

  9. Shadowmancy91

    November 16, 2023 at 2:22 pm

For the “most famous move”, I also thought of FIscher, but his queen sacrifice is what came to mind.
Rules changes- shatranj is a really neat version of chess with some very detailed strategic differences. Modern chess is this game with a few updates, such as having a Queen who can travel the board instead of an Advisor (because no king could ever have more than one queen).

  10. Cathsaigh

    November 16, 2023 at 2:39 pm

You can’t talk in high level official games. I’ve seen enough chess hustler videos to know that yeah you can trash talk during chess.

Stockfish has lost to humans. Jonathan Schrantz has a few videos of him beating Stockfish with wild attacking openings. It takes a lot of preparation and even some luck, but it’s precisely because of the reason Levy stated—bots can only see so far ahead. Their vision is usually perfect within their calculation depth, but bots have no knowledge or understanding to make decisions that look beyond that. Even though we sometimes joke about chess bots being stupid or smart, they actually have no real intelligence at all—not Stockfish, not Leela, not Torch, not even GPT 4.

    • Peter Ingraham

      November 17, 2023 at 12:58 am

Don’t know Schrantz, but that almost surely wasn’t Stockfish on its max, brutal, win the tournament settings. Super-GMs back in 2005-2010 were getting their clock cleaned by Rybka consistently, and modern Stockfish annihilates the best AIs of 2010 even on equivalent hardware to the era (e.g. a cellphone or the like). Google seems to indicate Schrantz isn’t even titled, so… yeah, something fishy is going on here.

  36. mrnnhnz

    November 17, 2023 at 1:39 am

I feel you could’ve been a lot clearer about en passant. The main thing you didn’t say was that that take move, if you choose to perform it, MUST be the very next thing that you do after the pawn-up-two move.

    • Nishyanth Kumar

      November 17, 2023 at 11:17 am

wdym? you have to take anyways, it’s forced

    • mrnnhnz

      November 17, 2023 at 1:32 pm

@Nishyanth Kumar nope. You can choose not to take the pawn. But you give up the right to take it en passant if you don’t take it straight away.

    November 17, 2023 at 8:18 pm

wait … if you promote a pawn to a bishop, you might still have to use the special notation since you’d get a second piece… same goes for queens? In fact, you might have 2 queens on the same file and 2 queens on the same rank as the queen you’re intending to move… notation is so easy!

  55. Luke Tolbert

    November 17, 2023 at 11:28 pm

Most satisfying mate is en passant checkmate followed by bong cloud checkmate, long castle checkmate, short castle checkmate, and as Anna suggested, checkmate with pawn aka Uber pawnage.

One tiny, teeny edge-case correction. Regarding notation “you only need to do this for knights or rooks as bishops can’t be on the same colour…” …unless you promote a pawn to a bishop of the same colour. 🙂

    • Gwilo Viou

      November 19, 2023 at 12:26 am

Why is YT treating him like such an authority? Not even a general manager, he is. He is akin to a chess player for hire. Because he doesn’t employ clickbait as Levy does for phony hype, Agamador is far superior.

1:08 bro the most satisfying chackmate by a landslide is bishop+knight+king endgame checkmate. I think two knights and a king against a king and pawn is probably even better but it never happens so my point stands.

Everyone knows the best checkmate is en passant mate, reasons 1: it’s funny. reason 2: its very rare. reason 3: if you’re opponent says you’re cheating you can simply tell them to google en passant.

  85. Del Aa'se

    November 21, 2023 at 9:33 am

09:20 The information here is, lets say, incomplete; which is understandable as its virtually impossible to complete chess. Not in a lifetime and certainly not in 15 odd minutes..

Thought I might add that pawn captures do require that you indicate the origin file (exf6 = pawn e takes on f6). And pawn promotion to a bishop that results in two bishops of the same color for a player, or to a queen to yield more than one queen for a player, does result in similar “complications” like for the Knights and Rooks.

  86. Gil Vasquez

This comment may be trigger people but chess reminds me of Dark Souls.

The only way to learn is by constantly dying and retry. You have to do many choices in the moment and you have to marry your choices because once you start an action, you cannot do anything until the animation is off (in other words: if you choose to drink a potion you cannot do anything until the animation ends, the same if you dodge or make an attack).

In the 1st game you cannot just blindly attack, you need to unserstand when yo do something
