I won’t be surprised to see another level of depressed humans due to psuedo relationships with these AIs. We are living like the one in the movie, HER.

Lol, I was thinking that when Inflection released the Pi AI LLM model. Their voice chat is crazy.

Any developers reading this, is there an OpenAI voice API out there yet?

    • Jonathan Ekwempu

      October 31, 2023 at 1:21 pm

OpenAI may be using a Text to Speech API internally. Since they are strongly affiliated to Microsoft, I strongly believe they may be using Microsoft Azure Text-To-Speech API. Most cloud providers AWS, Google etc) have Text-to-Speech APIs or SDKs.

They are going to raise prices soon if they haven’t already.

Comparing AI chatbots to Netflix and Google assistant is like comparing apples to oranges. The amount of time I save using AI is substantial for writing, conceptual images, and day to day improvement through interactions.

That being said, most of my interactions are through Bing chat as it uses a version of GPT 4 and it’s free.

  6. NextNate03

    October 31, 2023 at 9:15 am

You lost me at 19.99 per month.

If it is free open AI, then it shouldn’t cost any money.

    • CNET

The crazy thing is any day now, that one final gap between generative AI and AI assistants will vanish and life will never feel more like sci-fi.

  10. Belgarath

    October 31, 2023 at 10:54 am

Why do I need this when it’s free with Bing and they are using Chat GPT4 if you turn that setting on?

    • CNET

      October 31, 2023 at 12:48 pm

Bing does respond with a voice but it’s not an active conversation yet. It’s similar but this feels more like you’re talking with someone.

    • Marc Connolly

      October 31, 2023 at 12:52 pm

Microsoft will assume it knows what you need from the app so feel free to trust them with that , I don’t.

Does OpenAI save your voice queries on their servers? Asking because there’s a lot to be concerned over if the leading AI company has a recordings of your voice that could be used to replicate it

  12. Danner Banks

    October 31, 2023 at 10:57 am

I would have to ask it to repeat itself a million times to cook something, unless it is smart enough to say “let me know when you are ready to move on to the next step.”

    • Ten Slider

      October 31, 2023 at 12:31 pm

You can tell actually tell it to do just that in the conversation.

    • Danner Banks

      October 31, 2023 at 12:36 pm

@Ten Slider nice, thanks for letting me know!

    • CNET

      October 31, 2023 at 12:51 pm

I did ask it to repeat itself a few times while I was cooking and it knew exactly what I wanted. In the video, I asked it how to prep the chicken again and it repeated itself with those instructions. So, you can ask follow-up questions and it understands. Pretty cool. The whole listening in the background part I thought was weird but it makes sense. And it also saves the transcript so you can refer to that when gathering ingredients, etc.

The recipe idea was a GREAT suggestion and demo for this new voice tool. Without having to pick up your phone with dirty fingers, you can just ask it to repeat itself, ask follow up questions about whatever is going on, and probably even change the subject and then return back to the original recipe without issue. One interesting thing is if it can tell when it’s being talked to or not. For example, if I suddenly want to ask Alexa for the news, can ChatGPT hear that “prompt” without transcribing it AND the news… that’s a tough ask.

    Excellent piece 👍🏾
This is nice, but you can experience an even better chat experience with a sophisticated, human-like avatar that uses GPT 3 and mid-journey API via Call Annie. In my opinion, the voice options are even better on Call Annie. There you won’t access the more sophisticated GPT 4 or 3.5 but for most people, GPT 3 is intelligent enough for your queries and tasks.
