Can These AR Glasses Take Your Gaming to the Next Level?
Each of the lenses of the Xreal Air AR glasses features a 1080p display, and the glasses can act as a second monitor for any USB-C or HDMI device. During the making of this video Nreal changed their company name to Xreal. The Xreal Air/Nreal Air products are the exact same but this is why…

Surface Pro 7 review: Hello, old friend 🧙
Jon Holstein
July 3, 2023 at 9:14 am
They aren’t AR glasses (AR means Augmented reality and they don’t have any Augmented Reality features). They are glasses that offers a screen, without any fancy VR tech. And as such, the concept has it’s uses. But the screens are too small. And the block-out should be attached to the glasses, so it is more a case of just flipping it up for the few occasions when you might need to grab that gaming controller, or remote to control playback… sure you could just take them off, if it was possible to design them to be easier to take off, and we are probably a couple of years away from that.
I would really love to have a pair of glasses that just offers a big screen. And at this point, the Vision Pro, still seems to be the best for that, in terms of image quality, and with the potential of playback of 3D films, but they are unnecessarily complex, with the sensors, the fake eyes and all of that, which makes sense for some VR functionality and for use in an office or similar. But as just something to watch media on to replace a large TV/Projector, or for portable media playback when travelling or to take with you, to make sure you have access to a big screen no matter where you go on holiday or for work, the Vision Pros are too complex. And I’m unsure if any non-pro version would just drop those features, to just work as media glasses. And I would not expect a non pro version to come with the same quality of screens… But perhaps they could do a Apple TV Glasses Pro, for that.

Surprised you didn’t mention the 3D stereoscopic functionality as they’re great for watching 3D movies and playing 3D games.

Sounds like you cannot create multiple screens from a computer and display them in front of you.

The Question is when will there be a next Version of XREAL?
Plus they need to ship Worldwide and not only the USA

I love my pair. I mostly use them with my BT headphones to get a personal theater experience for Netflix when I’m on a plane.

We really need to figure out the cable problem and a solution, NReal practically copied Google Glass with a glass prism and a ruby coding platform with C++

They already have the “beam” an upcoming powered compute unit for the glasses. According to Xreal it should make connections a lot simpler, but the best experience will always be using a cable.

I’m 8 seconds in. Maybe they’ll cover it. The company has renamed and “Nreal” doesn’t exist anymore.
Edit- Nope. They showed amazon pages that display the new name, but he never mentioned that Nreal doesn’t exist anymore.

Yes I also noticed this. Kinda weird how dated this video feels. XReal is the new name. It’s also going to ship with an optional battery powered compute unit, that corrects many issues some user are currently experiencing.

I sure wish he had spent more than 5 seconds on what the glasses are like to work on. How are they after 2-4 hours? How are they after 6-10 hours? Is this a realistic monitor replacement.

He shows the size of the virtual screen. And, to my eyes it looks to be about 16 inches. But, it’s taking up nearly all of his field of view so it would appear to be huge. But, as far as demonstrating how big the screen is, that is very unclear.
Also, when Xreal talks about this they always talk about the virtual screen size (it’s something like 107 inches or whatever though this changes based on what you’ve got it connected to.

There’s going to be an optional “Beam” device sold separately. This device will act as the smart brains for the glasses for resizing/reorienting the screens, as well as easier 3rd party device connection and additional battery. Field of view is 54° or something close. So the produced image could be that large, but when using my meta quest 2 to do similar tasks it’s fairly comfortable to make the simulated screen roughly 50″. These would be far more comfortable than the meta quest tho seeing as they’re only 2oz.

I wish he had spoke about what these are like to use with glasses. I hear that’s an issue for people who wear glasses.

With smartphones the dongle life issues happens only with iphones. I find it unbelievable that as a reviewer you end up blaming the Glasses for IOS shortcomings…👎

NGL, the nreal glasses, got me hyped, and I was planning to get one until Apple announced their Vision Pro. Yes, the nreal, now called the XREAL, is cheap and light. However, the Vision Pro offered what I wanted in an AR/VR headset. It will also fit perfectly in my Apple ecosystem. XREAL will still be my second option for AR/VR experiences despite it not being either in an ideal situation.

I wonder if the nreal glasses would work when attached to the backbone controller when playing games. Basically plugging in my wired headphones to the backbone controller and the nreal glasses to the backbone controller from the usb c port. The display would be large than my phone but my phones display is way sharper and way brighter than the nreal glasses since I have the sony xperia 1 iv android phone. I wonder if it’s possible to pass thru the audio from the headphone jack from my sony xperia 1 iv to the nreal glasses than the nreal glasses plugged into the usb c port on my sony xperia 1 iv. Basically plugging in my sennheiser hd 600 from the headphone jack to my sony xperia 1 iv and than the usb c port from the nreal glasses to the usb c port on my sony xperia 1 iv. My sony xperia 1 iv supports audio and video from the usb c port.

I got them, usfortunatly your head has to stay still, which is imposible since we are use to move our head all the time to see better the corners of a screen, now, I pre-order the beam device, that is going to be revolutionary,.

You failed to mention it has NO motion sensor, so the image moves whenever you move your head instead of remaining in the same spot.

The Beam solves this. It’s another product XReal will be offering that enhances it to act more like a wireless smart display. Resizeable stable 3dof displays, easier connection control.

I forsee many companies bringing similar products like this. This is fantastic for the price. I feel products like these will significantly reduce the demand for the Apple Vision pro.

Thanks for the unbiased review!
However, given when this video is coming out, I would have loved to see how things change with the xreal beam add on. It’s $110 more but addresses a few concerns like the multiple adapters needed for the switch as well as holding the screen in place when the head is rotated. Would love to see a follow up when the beam is available to review!

I’m more interested in the quality. I think this setup (glass just displays) is the best solution, and it’s the other devices that are the issue. It would be nice to have an option for battery pass-through that would change both devices, though! I’m sure if something like this becomes popular, that would happen. It’s all about the quality? Is there a screen door effect? What is it like with the front panel on. I care more about travelling than I do the fixed positions. Steam deck and Phone seem like the win. I wonder if DEX can work?

Usb c ipads don’t have to have an adapter. I am disappointed that this review the beam, but I think this will fix a lot of the complaints in this review and in real life.

The switch doesn’t need the dock- though it still is a bit cumbersome – If you have USB-C to HDMI cable, you can put it through the HDMI adapter. it isn’t perfect, but it works.
