Makes sense. Coming to terms with Langdon’s fashion is going to be far easier than accepting Ethan’s very freebird lifestyle. Always choose compatibility over anything else if going for longterm. Chemistry is far more likely to improve over time whereas compatibility is far less likely to.

I didn’t need AI to tell me that Jill and Landon had the most chemistry; I thought it was obvious the moment he started beatboxing and she improvised a rap. The only negative she had about him was that he dresses to the nines every day. That sounds more like someone who’s “intimidated” rather than “turned-off”. Like if a larger heavier person were to date someone with six pack abs. They might feel insecure by comparison. But in my experience, when a couple has true chemistry, none of that superficial stuff matters. I wish Jill and Landon the best of luck!

One key problem here is that you are asking the AI to rank compatibility, but a human doesn’t simply fit with another human like a LEGO brick. Compatibility is something that is proven overtime and experiences and can grow or mature as people experience life together. You are also assuming that after meeting someone for a few minutes that a person can even gauge compatibility through the haze of hormones, expectations, and conditioning we all carry around.

However, I am reminded of the speed dating scene in The Accountant 2, where Ben Affleck’s character uses his savant-level smarts to reverse engineer the matching algorithm of the speed dating event. He gets like all the matches, but he completely bombed when it came to actually talking to the women.

So you see that, although reality can be more complex than what this experiment shows or suggests, if you take a closer look at two people getting to know each other, we human beings can actually “predict” or kinda “feel” pretty well how all of this will end or turn out.
But afterward, it is very likely that we just let those two people be alone to ultimately find out whether they were right for each other or not. And then we usually do not store that prediction in our brains for future use. We simply forget the fact that we once made that “prediction” because it is no longer relevant to us or whatever. That is how our nature works, and we do not go around telling everybody we once predicted whether a couple would match, etc. What else would we humans use this information for besides a fun social experiment? I think what belongs to those two people is intimate, and everybody else should mind their own business.
The handicap with AI (for humans, unfortunately) is that it does not forget unless the people behind its code design it that way. So what would AI companies use this information for? Why would humanity even need this type of AI model? Do we really need to accelerate romantic compatibility, or should we instead improve our human interactions and put ourselves out there to meet more people rather than looking for technological shortcuts?
And if we do need technology for this, then who should be the right people developing it? Who should decide what features the AI model should have? Who can guarantee that the model will not be biased?
While we are watching what AI and the companies developing it are capable of — and deciding what kind of future they want with it — we are still not asking the main questions. We the people should be discussing and deciding these things right now, instead of letting billionaire AI companies decide how human beings fall in love with each other. Let’s leave this to humans.
We cannot expect new technologies like AI to be neutral when human history has already proven that we are not neutral, and neither is what we create. And worse, we cannot expect the people developing these technologies to be doing humanity a favor for free when capitalism, consumerism, and hidden power dynamics are all beneath the surface of AI.
