I find myself disagreeing more and more with Bridget’s views on Generative AI. I find it disappointing that her perspective is so limited.

Expressiveness is part of human communication. Adding expressiveness to AI can potentially make it better at “getting to the point” by adding another layer to its message. Similarly, robots in the future will need to use body language to further improve their communication skills.

This also massively increases the potential of generative AI in the realms of video games, therapy, and learning environments.

If Bridget wants a robotic personal assistant, it can be accomplished by changing the system prompt. But there is no need to bash them for creating and using an incredible feature.

Agreed. I normally really enjoy Bridget’s tech takes but not those on generative AI

We won’t have anything if we worried about how kids would abuse. She’s speaking like a mom and not someone into tech advancement.

It’s super weird that the AI tries to act like it’s human, and people don’t need to have misinformation tools. She’s right. Why are comments saying these are good things?

    • @gavinderulo12

      August 20, 2024 at 9:09 am

Because Gemini live isn’t just used for assistant tasks but also for things like reading stories, practicing languages etc. And for those aspects sounding human is a benefit. It would be cool to have a dial though.

And the photo thingy is very limited. You essentially need to make both fotos in the exact same place. It’s made for situations where there is no tripod, so the cameraman can still be added to the group foto.

I dont agree wih your take. This is literally innovation. These are new features. Your take on generative ai is similar to previous generations who feared technological innovations and change. Otherwise known as TECHNOPHOBIA.

They should just ask her before starting, she’s right on all counts

  19. @Rickiye

    August 19, 2024 at 9:57 pm

Interesting take. While using Bard (precursor to Gemini) I got the same notion it was presenting itself somewhat like a ‘humanized Ai’.
Maybe Google engineers coding it have an ’emotive’ Ai as their subconscious, ideal or expected basis of it from many movies and tv shows across recent years, if you’ve watched the movie Her and Ex Machina you get what I mean.

    • @h.c4898

      August 20, 2024 at 1:24 am

Before Bard there was lambda. A Google engineer said at the time the chatbot was sentient. Nobody believed him now we see that thing may have a conscience. But Google made sure to make it non-sentient cos people will freak out. Gemini is just a watered down version, HIGHLY bridled AI than its predecessors.

  20. @AinzBainz

    August 19, 2024 at 10:02 pm

So don’t use it! If Apple did it, you’d love the feature. And add me just doesn’t add a person, this is misinformation without context.

  21. @nocturnus009

    August 19, 2024 at 10:08 pm

This speaks volumes for the cloistered teams developing and red teaming Gemini. Looking forward to local police getting their Samsung Bodycam models.

    • @coopermatthewsprivate

It does – plus it’s actually obvious too you can see the cut out. It’s just a gimmick – also there is a 5 min timer so can’t use it later to recreate fake scenes

  24. @RealLifeTech187

    August 20, 2024 at 12:46 am

This fake conversations are there to cover up the time the AI needs to calculate its answer. That way it seems fast and responsive even though it took 30s to answer. Same logic as with slow thinking humans

At least this one didn’t offer a celebrity to do the voice, get turned down, and hire a sound alike and not pay the celebrity to basically make everyone think it’s their voice ….

  28. @Rockthespaceship

    August 20, 2024 at 2:43 am

Good grief. This is one of the worst examples of ‘reaching’.

I am not a Google fanboy, but even I have to admit that it is card to fault what Google has given us via the Pixel 9 series.

You cannot be serious about the Google photo thing 🤦🏽

Also, unless you take the second photo from the same place and angle… it’s going to look even more edited than it already does

  35. @joekind7687

    August 20, 2024 at 2:33 pm

The funny thing is OpenAI demo the same tech(Advanced voice mode), and from the looks of it, even more humanlike, and they were praised for being soo innovative. Google did it and now it’s evil.. 🤦 let’s stop the favoritism and just appreciate the innovation. Tech like this can help make life a lot easier same day. A little bit of positivity won’t hurt 🤷
