Half the world’s population is expected to be nearsighted in 25 years, and eye care professionals are pushing new treatments to slow the progression of worsening vision in kids. Essilor Stellest glasses became the first eyeglasses approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for controlling myopia in kids. Bridget Carey discovered her daughter is a candidate for the treatment, and walks through the journey of ordering and living with Stellest frames and lenses.

I thought it’s been determined that it’s not the screens or books but rather lack of sunlight that’s causing this surge in myopia?
Edit: of course they’re ignoring this fact, since sunlight isn’t something that Luxottica can sell you 🤑

It only barely helps. Barely measurable. The only thing that works is by quitting screens and books.

There is a 2.0 version(available Europe and Asia) with even better myopia reduction. It has been stuck in FDA approval for a while.

My eyes changed fast until I changed to progressive lenses for reading, and computer glasses so everything at my desk is in focus without eye strain. Even my lasik I had my eyes slightly nearsighted to 20/40 so legal to drive but I keep glasses in my car and my eyes don’t need computer glasses at my desk

Is this why nerds and people who read books all the time are depicted with glasses? 😂

This is good information I wasn’t expecting from CNET (because of the topic). My son is on atropine drops but I’m going to ask about these at our next visit.

The issue isn’t screens by themselves or even the strain of near work focusing, but the lack of outdoor time. The strong light levels outdoors (plus UV) sends a signal that stops the eyes from growing excessively.

As an optometrist, I can tell you that these lenses MIGHT help reduce a child’s myopia / shortsightedness, but it would only be by a very small margin. Your children will still be myopic and need eye correction – being myopic is largely a genetic component. The presenter is myopic and therefore so is her daughter. Myopia is caused by having a longer shaped eye or a corneal shape is a bit too steep… that is largely genetic and as a children grow and goes through adolescence that is why they become more myopic. If you have tall parents, then normally most of the children will be tall. Even as a professional, my gut feel is that these companies push these lenses to increase the frequency of visits and then sell more lenses… oh, and did you noticed that the “special” frame was part of the sales pitch.

Do these still work on adults too? I’ve had glasses since I was a kid, and even as an adult now, my prescription still continues to change and my nearsightedness still keeps getting worse 🙁

I’ve been wearing glasses since 11 yo. Neither parents needed glasses. Nor grandparents.
I remember the prescription got worse and worse every year till I was 17-18. But it wasn’t totally stable till after 25.
Then stigmatism took over and getting worse from one eye and then the other. Hence laser surgery to rid of the myopia was out of the question.
I now have a bit of cataract. My sister had her cataract surgery and she no longer needs glasses for long distance viewing but still needs glasses for reading.
So I will see after I have cataract surgery.
Yes, I wish this new technology had been around in my days.
PS, my grade 8-9 maths teacher told me that o probably didn’t need glasses in the first place. He didn’t though he wasn’t 20/20. His logics was that you didn’t need to have perfect vision just good enough to drive safely, eg. I wish my parents had talked to him when I was still in primary school. lol

Genetics definitely plays a roll. I have a graduate degree (so many many years of close up work) and my vision prescription is -0.25.
