@Gle-lv2fm I never hated on Apple’s obsession with thinness. Honestly, I didn’t even know that was a thing until this discussion.
My original comment comes from using foldables since 2019 and watching the foldable community repeatedly praise how much thinner and lighter the ZF7 was when it came out compared to its predecessors.
Foldables have historically been heavy and bulky. Now that the technology has gotten to the point where manufacturers can make them significantly thinner and lighter, especially with foldables, I think those improvements matter. So hearing someone say the new Duo makes other foldables look like prototypes is reaching way too far.
And if you think I’m just hating on Apple, I daily both the ZF8 and iPhone 17 Pro. What I’m saying is based on actually using both, along with years of experience using foldables and seeing what other long time foldable users have consistently valued.
A lot of newer foldable users, especially Apple fans, seem to be overlooking that history because everyone is caught up in the hype surrounding the Duo. That doesn’t mean the Duo isn’t impressive. It just means we shouldn’t pretend the things that have mattered to foldable users for years suddenly don’t matter because Apple finally entered the category.

With Apple surcharging other countries maybe it’s time to look at other brands even if they are not as high end as Apple. I have everything Apple but very hard to pay more than normal.

Mark seems to be wrong in calling it $800 increase for Duo in case of Australia. Australia’s prices are inclusive of GST whereas USA prices are not. So, first you need to compare Apples to Apples in this case (pun intended)! After GST effect it is $411 AUD premium over currency converted prices. So that comes to 25% premium. On other iPhones of this year, that premium is 15%.

from a consumer perspective, it will be an $800 increase as I won’t be getting the GST credit. for comparison, Samsung fold 8 is AUD$2,700, whereas Apple DUO starts at $3,500

As someone who is been an Apple user for 10 years: The Duo definitely looks more polished, especially for a first-generation foldable, but saying it makes the Fold8 Ultra look like a toy is wild. Samsung is thinner, lighter, has a 200MP camera, real optical zoom and way more mature multitasking. Apple may have nailed the design on the first try, but Samsung is still ahead in several actual capabilities. I switched to the Galaxy Fold 8 last week and will wait for the duo’s 3rd gen. The comment on the crease is overhype by the influencers attending the apple event (who has to say nice things about the duo) same as for the Fold 8, people online make it look like the crease is everything when is not.
Samsung also still has the advantage in serious multitasking. The Fold8 Ultra can run three apps simultaneously, floating apps, split screens, and Samsung has had eight generations to refine the software
Samsung has a clear advantage in camera hardware. The Fold8 Ultra has a 200MP main camera plus a dedicated 3x telephoto. The Duo only has two 48MP rear cameras and no telephoto at all.
Apple also did something Samsung hasn’t traditionally prioritized as much: the outer and inner interfaces feel like one continuous device. Apps reorganize themselves as you open it instead of simply expanding a phone UI. That’s probably where people are getting the impression that the Duo feels more finished even though it’s Apple’s first generation.
And the Fold 8 is $100 more than the Duo. I need a phone with performance and good cameras. I was going to upgrade the new Iphone Pro Max but I felt in love with the foldable design.
The reporter here has a clear bias and interest talking about how the Duo is the best.

In the US, most probably celebrities, politicians, businessmen and their children, superstar athletes, etc. In other countries, it’d be millions of regular people in mainland China, probably hundreds of thousands in Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, etc.
