The information about bugs on windshields (or lack of) was interesting. It never clicked until I heard him talk about it. It’s true. I can’t remember the last time I had a bug hit my windshield. Fascinating & scary information at the same time.

I remember once my Biology tutor told the class that tomatoes are fruits
But I don’t think he mention about the term Seeds but he said about that Fruits have flowers instead meanwhile Vegetables do not

Ive heard before that tomatoes are both a fruit AND a vegitable, with an explanation something like ‘Fruit is a biological term and Vegitable is a culinary term.’

Love this man. He talks so much with his hands that handcuffs would silence him.

Jokes aside, I hope he inspire a lot of people to study biology. It’s an incredibly important field.

What is the process that facilitates what attributes will be passed down? For example, if a couple has a child early in life, and then goes through some kind of physical or emotional struggle/trauma/hardship, and then had another child. Would the genetic information be different due to the events that occurred between the two siblings being born?

Don’t fleas, mosquitos etc. exist just because they have found their niche in the ecosystem or even just because their mere ability to exist and reproduce? They don’t necessarily have to offer something. Evolution has no higher goal it aims at, doesn’t it?

  28. El Tercero

    June 25, 2022 at 7:04 pm

    Tomato being a fruit….

At least to me is only a botanical term…. it’s the “fruiting body” of a plant rather than the vegetative body of a plant.

Basically its fulfills the role of spread seeds. But culinary-ily (if thats even a word) i see tomatoes as vegetables.

When you make a vegetable salad, cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce is whats comes to mind.
When you make a fruit salad, pinapples, apples oranges, etc comes to mind.

I guess the way the sugars are developed in the plant is how we as humans determine what made cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes as a vegetables to us laymen even though they are the fruiting body of a plant.

Next time you have steamed “vegetables” and its just assorted steamed squash. Ask the waiter, “why does my zucchini have seeds?”

The “bugsplatter” analogy is very clever, but on the opposite spectrum we are also seeing brief increases in massive swarming events as flying insects engage in last-ditch efforts of survival during ever prolonging drought events. One day, the swarms will suddenly stop, and that is the day I dread the most.

My guy, I would’ve died of panic seeing a whale big enough to swallow me whole way before it swallowed me.

  112. matteo siboni

    June 28, 2022 at 5:48 pm

    Just to say:
    – Tomatoes are NOT FRUITS in the fruit vs vegetable argument, simply because fruit and vegetable have different meanings in science (for example an apple is not a fruit in biology). They are CULINARY TERMS and in the kitchen you use tomatoes as vegetables, AKA mostly in salty dishes, so that’s what they are (you don’t usually use them in cakes and jellies).
    – Plants don’t STRICTLY need animals to survive (not even for reproduction), but, excluding artificial means, they do need some sort of fungae and bacterias, otherwise the organic matter would not decompose.
    – Non decidous plants don’t shed leaves because it is a complex adaptative behaviour that developed way later in plant evolution. The non decidous simply slow down their methabolism to cope with winter, but they don’t shut down completely. It’s a matter of investment and resources. Some plants just invest in a slower growth, creating sturdier leaves that do not shed during winter, as such, they can’t grow as fast as the others (if not in the tropical area), while others do prefer to speed up really fast during the good season and stop during the bad season. Usually, the deciduos behaviour is way better when you have a temperate climate with hot to cold changes during the year, and non deciduos is way better in extreme or very stable climates. Most trees in the amazon forest don’t shed, neither do most trees in very cold or very hot environments, like deserts or frost lands.

10:06 I’m a little bummed that he sidestepped the question here. I understand his explanation that this trait won’t pass down because it’s not genetic, but I think the question was more “why hasn’t this shaped evolved over time?” As in “why isn’t this larger pollen supply advantageous over the current form?” I’d have like an explanation there, even if it were speculative.

I have done a decent amount of research, and while I wouldn’t recommend getting rid of every annoying insect, it is pretty commonly agreed upon that there would be no significant negative environmental impact if mosquitoes went extinct. There are many scientists actively working on ways to make this happen, or at least the female mosquitoes, which are the ones that bite. They are creating genetically modified males who pass a gene on to their young that makes them only have male offspring. This has decreased some female mosquito populations by 90%, so has been very effective.

Getting rid of mosquitos wouldn’t actually be as bad for the environment as people think.

It’d save TENS OF THOUSANDS of CHILDREN every year. And hundreds of thousands of people every year.

Any ecological damage could be offset with other species that don’t create disease. Any ecological damage would never come CLOSE to touching the resources we spend every. Single. Year. Trying to save these people. Hundreds of thousands of deaths a year of human beings.

Eradicate the masquitos. This is an example of environmentalists choosing their field of study, over human lives.

These species are all extremely resilient and can not only survive but flourish in many environments.

Still can’t completely understand how some parts of life evolve. For example blood. I mean, either you have blood or a heart and it works or you don’t have it (like cells), but there is no in between. It’s just like “poof” and it’s there and works … what do i miss?

    • Jarski l

      July 5, 2022 at 4:37 pm

      There where middle grounds.
Very first organisms did not require a heart. Everything needed was diffused through cell membrane.

Then came more primitive ciruclatory systems. You can imagine them little like tubes that move nutrients and water inside trees. Again, purely physics.

Then muscles started to develope on those tubes and no longer they were limited by physics alone. Now stuff could be delievered even faster by using muscles.

Then hearts started to develope as it was more efficinient to have single stronger muscle centered than have big network of tubes constantly twitching in order to move blood around.

    • T J

      July 5, 2022 at 8:58 pm

The liquid filled (cell fluid, not exactly blood as i understood) tubes with muscles around i did not know existed. Then it is possible that a heart is evolving and the liquid evolved with time to a more specialized fluid for transporting nutrients … blood …
That was the link i missed. Thanks man, learned something new there 👍

For the mosquitos (1:20), there is also another idea: They are the last defenders of the rainforests. The prehistoric jungles of the Amazon and Borneo are still untouched in their core thanks to these little fuckers, humans just cannot survive there because of them. So, some theorize that if it weren’t for mosquitoes, human would already have destroyed these pristine places.

To the guy who asked the question about Birds being hit by Cars- i’m with you man. i’ve been driving for 30 years, never once hit a bird, hit plenty of mammals, or had to swerve around them. In fact i have VERY often witnessed birds “buzzing” the path of my car. Seemingly daring me to hit them, but they always dodge. It’s almost like a game to them, and i don’t slow down or swerve for birds.

So, while i don’t have statistics, and a good source might be your local roadkill clean up crew, my lifelong anecdotal evidence tells me that birds absolutely dodge cars and most land mammals do not or cannot. Why or how is a very interesting question.

    July 13, 2022 at 9:23 am

My question would be (and yes, i know this is probably futile): how/why did plants evolve to allow the pollination of their seeds by other creatures, surely it would behoove them to evolve some mechanism of doing it themselves, or is it a question of saving resources? And further, what does the evolutionary process look like for that? I mean, how do the plants know that insects/birds/mammals are carrying their seeds to another location to sprout another representative of their species? Since they have limited perception of their surroundings, how would evolution “know” to utilize a totally different species for this purpose?

These may be dumb questions, i realize, but i’ve never understood that part of evolution – how does “it” “know”?

    • Malaama John Wachi

      July 17, 2022 at 9:57 am

I’m no evolution expert, but since your Good questions are yet to be answered I’ll give my 2 cents.
Fruit bearing plants evolved to be because it’s more efficient for them to be so. Seeds developing around their parent plant leads to overcrowding and poor development. A plant growing on it’s own has greater chances of maturing.
This gets repeated enough and becomes part of the genome.
Some plants disperse their seeds far without animal help. There is water dispersal and wind dispersal. Some plants have even developed seed pods that explode and fling the seeds as far as possible.
Evolution does not “know” per se, it’s a time based process chalk full of a multitude of “prototypes” before a settled system can become dominant.

Humanities biggest advantage is it’s ability to tech it’s way out of problems. Look around, it’s undeniable!

  347. Toby Legion

He is quite biased in some topics.
Many biologistd don’t agree on the importance of parasites like ticks, mosquitos and fleas.
There are other, less harmfull animals that would fill the gap and no animals that only specialize on those.
    And insect Armageddon?
Based on a study out pf germany, that had many methodical flaws. Like the windshield splatter analogy: Cars have become sleeker, and with that the impact angle has changed, which results in less splat and even sweeping some away by the airflow before the impact.
