There was no critical moment when fish move on to land. It was a gradual change in form over generations. These generations gradually spent more time out of the water. Emphasis on gradual.

So if life requires cells plural, how can one cell be living?

    • Rick Kwitkoski

      November 26, 2021 at 11:47 pm

No. Life doesn’t require “cells”, plural, to be alive. There are many organisms that are single-celled. The most commonly known domain of such are bacteria.

  37. ashtwenty12

    November 26, 2021 at 11:17 pm

Question. What determines the difference between a spicies, and a breed. Different animals can appear so similar, but can’t reproduce.

    • Rick Kwitkoski

      November 26, 2021 at 11:45 pm

A definition of species is an interbreeding group of organisms, or at least, they have the ability to interbreed if they met up. In this case, they might be called sub-species instead.
A “breed” is an artificially created group of a particular organism. A group that was created by humans interfered with WHICH organism would breed with which other one.

However, in ALL cases, the slotting of any organism into a particular group, genus, family, order, class etc. etc. is purely artificial and only for the benefit of humans.

  55. Seti Michael Maxwell

    November 27, 2021 at 10:41 pm

Speaking of bioethics, I wonder if we can invent a deadly virus and just accidentally release it in the human population to test how far it would go? I know it sounds kind of bad, but maybe the humans will build immunity to it after a few decades.

    • Pal n PWN

      November 27, 2021 at 11:03 pm

Depends on the virus. If it kills you instantly you probably won’t be able to build immunity to it. Same if it has an insane mutation rate. But with viruses like chicken pox, most humans already have built immunity to it.

  57. Rob Larssen

    November 27, 2021 at 10:52 pm

very informative video, but your explanation of CRISPR is not quite correct. The real advantage of CRISPR is that new genes can be introduced into the genome, not just turning existing genes on and off, so I think that question at 8:52 was actually asking, can we engineer a resistance gene and add it to the banana plants

  58. Marco Montalto Monella

i have a question, is evolution basically just slight changes over a long period of time with natural selection

    • Dr. Zoidberg

      November 28, 2021 at 11:52 pm

Yeah. Imagine a pair of rabbits having 10 babies. Each baby rabbit will inherit a slightly different mix of its parents genes, & some may have genetic mutations that add even more variety… all of this is basically just chance.

But after that, the genes inherited by each of these babies will contribute to their ability to survive & pass on their own genes. Perhaps they live in a very snowy alpine region, so white fur will give them an advantage over their brown furred sibling. Alternatively, maybe they live in a desert where the brown fur would be better. You could say the same for any other kind of trait… maybe their environment favors not hopping as high or maybe being a stronger swimmer is particularly valuable, etc. That’s the “natural selection” process.

So, over many generations these small changes compound & eventually, two groups of rabbits with different evolutionary pressures will become different enough that they will become entirely different species. Over VERY long periods of time, this is how we’ve gotten the vast diversity of life we see on this planet.

I thought people yawn because the brain needed more oxygen or smth. But if that’s not the case, a theory that I wanna put out there (original, at least I think it is), is that yawning is basically stretching. Maybe a particular muscle in our body that we need to breathe with needed to stretch(?) the diaphragm or maybe just our jaw. Let me know what y’all think. It’s pretty far fetched, but then again it’s just a theory.
