I own a remarkable 2 with the upgraded pen that allows you to erase with the back like a normal pencil. Had it for about 4 months now and I have no complaints. Not even with the backlight. With so many screens in our faces nowadays I’m grateful to have a device I can use that’s easy on the eyes even when I have to use a lamp. At the very least I won’t have direct light in my eyes.
The Remarkable community is also amazing! Custom pdfs that are hyperlinked so you can have complex journals and planners. ie. clicking on a date in a month and it taking you to the exact day for your notes. I highly recommend this device even outside of work. My lists like chores and shopping are in there. And there are plenty of DRM free books. I feel like you’re underestimating how many you can actually purchase and own. The remarkable also keeps your spot on the ebooks so it’s not that different than kindle. Maybe you’ll miss scrubbing through pages or having a progress bar.

Where I don’t think E-Ink Tablets directly compete with “traditional” Tablets. I do feel so long as Apple has an iPad at $329 these E-Ink Tablets will have problems finding a market at the $300+ price point. It’s hard for me to recommend a $300 dedicated device, when for $329 an iPad can do everything the E-Ink Tablets can plus many more things. A shorter battery life and the pencil is an accessory for those who need it as really the only down sides for the iPad. In some cases the iPad + pencil are cheaper than these E-Ink Tablets.

It’s sad that Kobo is unusable for any real writing. It’s just a big ereader and a collection of buggy beta features.

June 13, 2022 at 7:45 pm
I have a Kobo eReader and like it so the natural system for me seems the Ellipsa. Of the three you show however it is the least “elegant”. That is imprecise but what I mean is it seems thick and clunky. I have a small Mobiscribe for digital writing but after a year have decided it’s too small for extensive notes and it won’t let me write/highlight my books. I like the Boox enough to get it but wonder if Kobo won’t soon come out with a more refined product. I see no indication that they will but would love a thinner, easier to handle Ellipsa. MyKobo eReader is simply great. Would like to stay in their ecosystem. The iPad I have is not fun or easy for reading ebooks. I also find it distracting because of all it offers. E ink is great for reading and writing. Nice review, thank you.

I initially found Youtube distracting, because of all it offers. I eventually learned to limit myself to viewing things that truly served my purposes.
I think the same applies to reading on an Ipad Mini. If I truly feel tempted to navigate away from what I’m reading, then I just need to intrepret that as: either I’m not finding what I’m reading that interesting after all, or I’m in need if a study break, in which case music or a few moments of silent meditation are likely to be more helpful than looking at any of the many disagreeable things that can be found on the internet.

Let me offer a helpful advice for those of you looking to buy any of the aforementioned devices. Skip all those devices and go straight to 13.3 inch Onyx Boox Max Lumi 1. Yes, I know Max Lumi 2 is already out, but Max Lumi 1 is better, and cheaper too.
Onyx Boox Note Air 2 (as mentioned in this video) is fine for occasional reading and writing for a few minutes at a time. And, it’s a fine device, but 10.3 inch is simply too small for extended use. In fact, any tablet smaller than 13.3 (A4 size) is simply too small for serious reading or writing.
After watching Voya’s many videos about e-ink devices, I decided to buy Max Lumi 1. I made a correct decision. It’s worth every penny – best investment I have made in a long time. So, let me save you the trouble of regretting later if you buy anything smaller than 13.3 inch device, and just go for Onyx Boox Max Lumi 1 as it offers the most features for your money. You are welcome.

I was looking into a E-Ink Tablet, but I don’t think it’s a worthy investment for me. Especially for $300. Tablets have a good capability of taking notes as well as viewing PDF files and storing them into the cloud. It doesn’t seem like a good investment for me. That doesn’t mean that E-Ink don’t have it’s uses. Just not for me. I’ll just stick to tablets.

E ink note taking devices are not tablets. Their purpose is to only and only replace paper notebooks/notepads without the glare and eye strain of LCD/LED tablet. If you add up all the money you spend on paper/printer ink/notebooks etc in 1 year, 2 years etc and compare that to how much a Remarkable 2 cost ($300 and you can buy any EMR pen from Amazon for much less than the Remarkable Plus) you will realize that the E ink note taking devices are well worth it. You can go paperless with an iPad or Samsung tablet and do a lot more with those devices, but the trade off is eye glare/eye strain and the really lousy sensation of writing on glass with a plastic device.

I got the RM2 primarily for reading academic PDFs and note taking. But had to return it for two reason: (1) main reason: no landscape mode for pdfs (many science journals publish in 2-column format and landscape is ideal; landscape is also better for most figures); (2) secondary reason: extremely slow integration with dropbox and inability to scroll through long lists of pdfs without the device freezing. Ended up with the Kobo Elipsa instead. Looking forward to RM3.

June 17, 2022 at 9:06 pm
I have so much to say on this one!
I own a ReMarkable 2, Onyx Boox Nova 3 Color and Boox Leaf. In general I’d recommend getting an Onyx Boox as they can obviously do so much more and does have a frontlight if you’re working in a darker room.
The ReMarkable 2 is overall pretty awesome, but I do have a lot of issues with it. Before I get into the issues, I just want to make one quick comment on the reason why it does not have a frontlight, which is that the creators were trying to make the absolute best writing feel. If you add a frontlight it makes the distance for the stylus tip to the surface larger, which weakens that writing feel technically. That being said I do prefer a frontlight and would sacrifice a little “writing feel” for it.
I don’t agree with her assessment of ReMarkable 2 being “the cheapest” option. In Canada and apparently in Australia they actually gauge the customer. Rather than converting $299USD to $389CAD, they charge us $499CAD, which is cheaper than pre-subscription era when it was $599CAD. Hooooowever this is only for the tablet! The boox and kobo device that she’s comparing this price with come with a stylus and case! The $300USD is JUST for the tablet, you wouldn’t get a stylus included at that price. If you were to add up everything she is showing in this video, brown Folio plus the stylus you’d have spent $547USD then on top of that you pay $8/ month for extremely basic features that are available on all other eink tablets for free. If you owned a ReMarkable for 3 years the total cost will be $835USD whereas the other two devices would remain $499usd and $400usd with case and stylus included.
Also Eink has colour now, they are not limited to Grey scale. I own the Boox Nova 3 Color and have Kindle, kobo, libby, perlego, comixology, Marvel unlimited, and DC Universe all installed. I genuinely prefer reading from my Nova 3 Color to read Marvel unlimited than using my Samsung tablet to read coloured comics, textbooks, etc. That being said, my Nova 3 Color is now quickly becoming outdated. The new Nova Air C is using On-Cell Touch technology which makes the screen more vibrant, etc. But this is soon to be eclipsed by the latest announcement of Kaleido 3 and Eink Gallery 3 as both will dramatically improve colour Eink from my Nova 3 Color which is using Kaleido 2. New colour Eink devices should be coming out over the next few week-months.
Overall if I were not grandfathered into the ReMarkable subscription and I were buying today, I’d be getting a Boox Note Air 2 Plus or possibly a device by Bigme such as the Carve Color or Max+ Color.
And for any who want to shop around and explore other options besides the ones listed above. You can check out devices by Boyue/Meebook, Bigme or Dasung which also have Google Playstore as well as devices by Supernote (has Kindle), Fujitsu Quaderno (goodereader claims they have the best writing feel and technically can get Google play with a bit of a hack), PineNote from Pine64, Huawei paper Matepad, Sony DPT, Quirklogic Papyr, etc.

You mention the Supernote … although the company apparently has a good reputation, I would be extremely reluctant to purchase any device that I can’t get either on Amazon or Best Buy, both of whom stand behind the products they sell.
Steven Prosser
June 17, 2022 at 11:43 pm
@Mark Victor I’ve got no problem, buying from Boox or ReMarkable directly, as I have done so myself and experienced no issues. They both provide warranty, I’ve used it in the case of ReMarkable as my ReMarkable 1 had an internal defect appear over a period of time. Supernote is extremely reputable and well known for their excellent customer service and communication. I would have no problem whatsoever buying from Supernote directly 🤷. They have a much better reputation than ReMarkable for customer care. I wouldn’t limit myself to what the major companies are selling, you’ll just miss out on some amazing products. I listed more obscure companies than Supernote that could be a better example of being cautious, but even then, they’ve all got their own warranty and user base you can look into to learn how they deal with customers, etc.

June 19, 2022 at 1:45 pm
@Steven , why did you buy so many of these ? You could have ” tried ” for 15-30 days and return the others.
Steven Prosser
June 19, 2022 at 6:08 pm
@Hope Dc because I enjoy them and have different use cases for them… why do I have to explain myself? I own 3 Eink devices that I use daily, as well as two older kindles and plan to get more down the road. I also didn’t buy all of these at once and compare them to each other. I bought the ReMarkable 2 around when it was first released to replace my ReMarkable 1, which I gave to my dad. I recommended the ReMarkable to many people when I first purchased it, then they added a subscription (which myself and anyone who owned before Oct 12ish 2021 has been grandfathered into) and instead of ADDING features and saying here’s how much it will cost per month to gain these features, they instead removed extremely basic features like emailing yourself and handwriting conversion UNLESS new customers pay. I now feel I warn friends and family that there are plenty of other options rather than plunging into a ReMarkable purchase. It’s still great for writing for those who don’t mind the subscription, etc.
Then several months to a year later, I bought a Nova 3 Color, as it is colour Eink and great for reading textbooks, graphic novels, comics, magazines, etc. As well as note taking in colour if I feel the need to. And then several months later I bought the Boox Leaf which is my go to for reading books/novels, it has no writing capability. I use all 3 of these almost every single day. I often (nearly daily) use the ReMarkable 2 to take notes of what I am reading on either the Leaf or Nova 3 Color. I will likely buy the next colour Eink device using Kaleido 3, so that will be ANOTHER Eink device to my collection…will that bother you? My wife and soon my eldest kids can use these devices whenever they want, though they are all much less interested in them 🤷😅
Before this I owned 900 physical books, now I’ve transitioned to ebooks. Before committing to iPods I owned around 1000 cds.
Why do people buy more than one car for themselves? Why are their people who own multiple homes? Why are there people who own thousands of comics? Sports cards? Pokemon cards? Why do many collectors often have duplicates of the exact same item, ex. cards, 1st edition books/comics, etc.?
Since getting involved in the Eink world I’ve met people who own far more devices than I do.
Why does it matter to you that I like Eink and bought these devices separately with no intention of returning any of them within 30 days? That’s all you got out of my comment, was why do I own these devices? Was it an attempt a sarcasm, a joke, that I can’t interpret over a screen?
Who knows 🤷 but now you’ve got an explanation; have a great rest of your day
Hope Dc

@Steven Prosser Point taken… I have nothing against people on youtube getting devices. I just thought it was redundant. Chill man.
