Watched the moon landing in my first year in graduate school (yes in my 70s now). Stayed glued to the radio for days during Apollo 13 mission …… these were heady days with science and engineering in the US …….. all done with technologies less than what’s in your mobile phone today. We had more brain power then (do a lot with far less).

      Pretty cool, I’m born 1999.

I think we need to go to the moon now with HD cameras and inspire us people under 40.

      The world needs that.

I was 14 in 1969. I think I got to ditch my first Hobie skateboard with steel wheels and get into hard white plastic wheels that would leave white skid marks on the pavement. Space age stuff!

      I don’t get it

    • Paul Smith

      November 17, 2022 at 3:30 pm

@Rohan Abbas My first skateboard was a Hobie brand name that also made surfboards. It came with actual steel wheels that evolved into hard plastic then to variations of urethane with different characteristics. I was being facetious that my support used such last century tech instead of this decade tech.

You must be somewhere around 67, sir, am I correct. Your date of birth must be somewhere of 1955. You witness both apollo missions , elvis presley, and Michael jackson. What a time to be alive. I was born in 2001. Could learn a thing or two from you :).

We supposedly went to the moon in what the 60s? If we really went there we would be making daily, at least monthly trips there, all sorts of politicians and billionaires would have gone there. America loves stupid anniversary celebrations so we would have had 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 year anniversary trips etc. LOL

It costs us billions to send humans there for a symbolic victory against the Russians. Taxpayers would never support sending monthly visitors there. It’s way cheaper to send robots which we have done plenty of times since the 60s. You people need to come up with a new argument

Ah. Here is one for you..
There is a mirror on the moon that a laser is pointed at.. so Earth can keep track of how far it is away…
Look up in Google.. mirror on the moon… the only reason we stopped going there was funding.. America is run by geriatrics that doesn’t have a clue..
Here is a fun one. There are 7 billion, 700 million people.. that live outside America..
      And way more intelligent..

I remember when Sputnik was launched. We had a few families who camped and boated with us at the lake, and I remember watching Sputnik cross the sky at night while we were camping. I remember the early Mercury launches and everything that led up to Neill Armstrong walking on the Moon. Such exciting times.

So why did it take 50 years.. you would think that with modern technology it should be a breeze to get there.

    • Tina Marie

      November 17, 2022 at 12:45 pm

@J yes. $60 million a day. Why can’t we feed and clothe and give clean water to all the people of earth first?

    • J

      November 17, 2022 at 12:48 pm

@Tina Marie he was referring to the Apollo rockets when he said that. Context is key. And he was right. NASA didn’t just have a reserve of rockets ready to go to the moon. They are incredibly complex and require upkeep and maintenance… why do all that work if you aren’t actively going to the moon?

    • J

      November 17, 2022 at 12:49 pm

@Tina Marie I agree that money could be used in better ways, but $60m a day will not solve homelessness or world hunger.

    • Tina Marie

      November 17, 2022 at 12:52 pm

@J why go to the moon at all?

    • Tina Marie

      November 17, 2022 at 12:54 pm

@J it would be a nice start. Combined with the busgets of all the other space agencies…or perhaps our “defence” budget. We could create automated greenhouses. Water distilleries. Build housing (boxabls, maybe). The world’s problems are not hard to fix. The people that run this place don’t want them fixed.

I was 9 years old for the first moon landing, we lived in England at the time. My dad got me out of bed at some early hour so we could watch the first steps on the moon. My bedroom was decorated with all sorts of space and moon pictures. I’m glad to see we are going back.

Was praying for this to work flawlessly, reason being the wing nut owning twitter would have had a much much more swollen head, as if he is the sole inventor of rockets.

I remember all the launches going back to the Mercury program. Only got to see the replays on the evening news during the school year, but saw the live launches that took place in the summer. Also remember seeing the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey in NYC for a birthday present and believing that was the future (but it wasn’t). But then I remember watching the moon walks of Apollo 17 and no one cared, as most people had become hostile to the space program and were more concerned about inflation and the problems in the economy. I’m very happy to see us going back to the moon, but I wonder how the political/economic dynamics will play out in the coming years for human space flight given the costs and not a huge amount of public support (just space geeks like me). I give Elon Musk a lot of credit for concentrating on the economics of space flight by developing reusable vehicles.

As a reference for how long ago Apollo was, if they do land astronauts on the Moon in 2025 the chances of having an Apollo landing veteran available to even comment on it are slim.

Of the 12 men who walked on the Moon only four are still alive today (2022). Of those four, two are over 90 years old now (including the most famous, Buzz Aldrin) and all of them will be over 90 by 2025!
