Are Video Calls the Best We Can Do in the Age of the Metaverse? | Josephine Eyre | TED
Remote work, while redefining the workplace landscape, seems stuck behind endless video conference calls that hinder free-flowing conversation and collaboration. In the 21st century, is that really the best we can do? Digital anthropologist Josephine Eyre makes the case for embracing the metaverse as an immersive meeting place that could help reignite creativity and communication.…

While it does not include those unissued VR goggles the metaverse has already existed for 20 years, it is called Second Life, a decentralized more populated virtual world that is a 1000 times more varied and a1000 times more creative than Meta or any other big tech’s version. Folks mostly use it for fun, relaxation and social interaction.

Besides VR being incredibly uncomfortable over even short periods of time with the heavy headset, misaligned lenses (my heart’s out to all those who wear glasses), cybersickness is a very real thing and can give you some of the worst migraines I’ve ever experienced.
This doesn’t even touch on the heavy technical cost of knowing how to operate and maintain the equipment, having a machine capable of VR, a fast and stable internet connection and the bump on your electricity bill.
Video calls are already too far in a company settings.
It’s even more disruptive than a regular call and amounts often to less since more attention is being used on looking “presentable”.
Anything important should be written down, which the asynchronous method of text chat already has as a neat feature.
Anything spoken is lost to the void the second the meeting ends, and thus, wasted information and effort.
Besides all of that, nearly any meeting would be better off as an email. Thus, the remaining function of these forced meetings, only exists to feed social vampires.

Virtual reality is a waste of resources.

We should make reality better but I very much disagree with your argument. VR uses a lot less resources than the alternatives. If we replace real world meetings with VR it will use a lot less resources.

This lady has a very nice speaking voice and cadence, which is a shame because the content is extremely lacking. I expected a talk from Ted to be more insightful. My biggest issue, is not everything is metaverse. Metaverse is a name for a brand of vr. I think it’s very insensitive to assume that everyone on Earth has an adequate internet connection. Having a virtual work meeting is supposed to bring people together to make communication easier. But right now the technology is more distracting, and it seems to be the topic of communication. It would be like if a boss bought his construction crew a bunch of new hammers to help get their jobs done. But in the morning meeting instead of talking about everything that needs to be done, everyone is talking about the hammer. They are talking about what kind of belt holster they need for them, how it has accelerometers in it to measure the hitting forces, or how it’s Internet connected to remind you for coffee break. All I see is another way for corporations to put pressure on their workers for productivity versus communication. Why is your headset not on? How come your Mouse hasn’t moved in 25 minutes? Oh you’re sick, it’s okay just lay down in bed and put on your headset. I don’t feel like the actual issues have been talked about.

We are not in the age of the Metaverse. The “Metaverse” is an extremely weak attempt by the Facebook company to own even more of our social interaction. It’s been executed extremely poorly and frankly embarrassingly.

People don’t want to wear stuff on their face. 3-D movies in the 1950s, 3-D movies in the 80s, 3D movies in 00s along with 3D tv, google glasses anyone?, the lack of explosive growth in VR for everyday households… pretty heavy trend here.
Tech isn’t going to compensate for human psychology and most people don’t want to give up their true sight, their true social identity for anything more than a passing fad. When we think of the tv and when it was first introduced into households it passively invited use. Wearables for the face are less passive. If I need to take to my family, or tell a pet not to do something, or I need to grab a drink.. We shouldn’t have to give up real awareness and will to immerse.
Someone should be busting it on another immersion solution. We shouldn’t have to strap stuff to our faces, the tech should work for us with screens that aren’t 2D rectangles.

I can’t stand this childish enthusiasm without critical thinking. What are the consequences on the body and mind of immerging ourselves in an artificial world? We come from thousand of years where we evolved to live and interact in the real world, do we really have the presumption of creating a good alternative to that with some basic technologies?? Don’t we see the spiral of psychological illness we are into, caused by unhealthy and unnatural lifestyle, by the stress and so on?

The best way to talk to someone in real life.. is to talk to someone in real life. Anyone who’s used a VR headset before will know that, while it’s incredibly cool, it’s not reality. And it never will be. Because of many complications in the fundamental way VR technology works, there’s still no practical application for everyday life. VR is certainly still helpful in niche uses, such as playing 3d games, or simulating dangerous jobs, but there are too many people trying to use it as something else.

Also, any technology that enables you to smell or taste in VR either involves sticking electrical tubes up your nose and mouth, or implanting something in your brain. And neither of them are anything close to being fully developed.

The great thing about screens it that they are incredibly immersive (at least the expensive ones). When you play a video game with good graphics, you get into the game and it feels like you’re actually there. I agree sometimes, you kind of wonder what it would be like to reach out and touch it – which may be the appeal of VR – but you still feel the same way in VR, just in 3 dimensions. It will be different when VR virtual touch technology becomes mainstream, but even then screens are great because they’re convenient, you can see your environment if you want to, and you feel comfortable. VR is not better, simply different. Why are we trying so hard to solve a problem that we never had?
