A new report gives us a tease on how Apple’s AR/VR headset could work — but one detail sounds like complete magic. How could Apple render your actual face and body movement in VR while wearing a headset? CNET’s Bridget Carey breaks down the possibilities with our VR expert Scott Stein.

In my opinion, this presentation is a little too sarcastic, and borderline hyperbolic. Please keep it a little more on-point, with a slightly more neutral tone. Otherwise, I typically enjoy the material and presentations from CNET.

I think sticking with Memoji is a more aesthetic and desirable option. It keeps the virtual world separate from real world.
I don’t think this is a selling point, Apple will have actual reasons to get this device.

IMHO the main problem with VR is that it is exhausting for people with motion sickness like me. I’m very enthusiastic and I cannot stand more than half an hour without resting. Most of the people won’t make such effort to try it

Apple waits for others to come up with good ideas, see which ones work best, copies em, makes a slicker more intuitive UI, puts it behind a wall for max profit, and the world gives em credit for being the best innovators.

Shouldn’t be too hard to create a 3d face of yours, Apple has your Face ID already.
From there it’s just a matter of trying to line up somewhat generic muscle movements to convey your expressions using even just a little camera sensing.

It was the same problem with 3DTV: It still has good possibilities–and went through a lot of mistakes from an overeager industry that wanted to use it for everything it wasn’t suited for–but G@mer-b0iz immediately took over the discussion, thought any new tech was made Just For Them, said “Eww, there aren’t enough games, laaaaame!”, and rushed to YouTube to pronounce it “dead” overnight.
I’m not giving up my PSVR, but if an Apple VR can double as a 3D Personal Cinema headset compatible with Blu/4K players, I’m in.

Mmh, really good Animation/Motion Capture of 3D characters would interest me personally the most.
Getting creative by bringing avatars to life and record it and export it into 3D programs and get results, that are better then most expensive mocap solution would be a reason to buy it

At $3000 I don’t want to be using AR when I’m at a physical iMac already in my office. I want it to have a VR Mac Studio that works the same as a physical model would. The headset, or battery pack, has a USB-C input for data input and output. Having a VR pro-level computer + games and I think you could justify the price tag.

Still not convinced on the use case for ‘average’ Apple users. A lot seems to be doing the same things as you do in reality but in virtual environment- do not really see the point of using for a FT call, although can see the point of not needing multiple monitors and having virtual ones but only really if its multiple monitors you need. Keen to see what the everyday use cases are…but $3000…..!

I don’t think even Apple could ever make a VR headset popular.
AR glasses is another story though. That could really take off if done right. It has to offer something different from current technology, however!

I have doubts that Apple in this case will bring out anything groundbreaking. For this specific situation I think what they’ll bring out will just be more refined and intuitive than what others are offering. That is after all what Apple tend to do. I mean I am not going to spend that much money on a VR headset, I’m personally waiting for the meta 3. Also with apples face tracking, I wouldn’t be surprised if they used electrical impulse sensors on the face and temples to track muscle movement in the face. There is already loads of tech out there that can do this and would only take a little bit of calibration to tune it to your face. Also hoping apple bring some heavy duty graphics and improved resolution. The reason I’ve waited until meta 3 is because it really gets to me when I can see the pixels, which I still can with the meta 2.

I wouldn’t say no one cares about VR. Overall there has been over a billion dollars in game sales and the Meta Quest 2 sold better than the Xbox Series consoles in 2021. The issue is they are pushing the whole “Meta Verse” on people and trying to make people work in VR. They need to let it evolve on it’s own over time instead of saying this is what it is going to be.

What if you were able to easily transfer data from your iPhone on the go? You could walk around the city with your glasses on while constantly seeing real-time data about your environment. That would be pretty awesome. That would make for a next level navigation system or some next level tourist guides.

Not sure why replicating exactly what I look like in a virtual world is a killer feature. I think part of the appeal of VR is that there’s more flexibility in how you appear.
Sure body and facial tracking is necessary but I don’t think replicating our exact physical appearance in a virtual world is that appealing. A lot of people don’t want to appear how they are in the real world, hence the large cosmetics industry.

January 28, 2023 at 3:38 pm
Wasn’t there an article that mentioned you could do walk-through books with VR? That would be interesting, but still only a specific segment. I’m not sure Apple would already have that tech to create photo-realistic avatars — if Meta is struggling to get drawn-versions of full-body, and they show future labs for realistic avatars, it’s surely coming, but not sure Apple would be ahead of the game already on that; and think of all the processing power required for it in real-time. I’m still not understanding the draw of making things realistic when we have the real world to live in. Will we then become the out of shape blobs in Wall-E? I’m all for tech making productivity that much easier, but still not seeing the benefits for the everyday consumer.

I wouldn’t really be interested in an expensive Apple headset like that, but rather something more able to help my day to day functions like Google Glass. That project was revolutionary and nothing like it has come out since (except for maybe Snapchat’s Spectacles). It’d be nice to have a lightweight headset that works as a daily driver and can tell me things like Google Maps directions while I’m driving

Vr is already extremely useful and practical for 3d artists, designers, and developers, as it is the first technology that truly allows you to work with precision in actual 3d space easily (not just on a flat screen) so any tools for developing, modeling, sculpting, animation, etc in vr would be huge for me and I’d buy it for that

Apple are unlikely to do games, but if they can produce decent non-game experiences in mixed reality, then I’m hoping we will see something like the kind of competion we already have between Android and Apple but this time in terms of general VR apps. This can only be a good thing for the growth of VR a a whole.

From what I’ve seen, the video quality isn’t particularly good. Not only is it rather cartoon-like, but the lack of resolution and instant head tracking also makes most people seasick quickly. Before VR is going to be desirable these problems need to be fixed. Whether that means tracking head and eye movement instantaneously and applying realistic blurring and distortion like what you’d really see, or something else to make the experience seem real enough that your brain doesn’t reject it. For $3000 I shouldn’t need any other monitor. The quality of a simulated monitor in VR ought to duplicate or exceed my real 4K monitor.

This just means Apple can see everything in your home, whether you are using your device or not. Expect it to be spying on people. I am sure this headset will be popular with only-fans, and pornstars for one on one time to make more money.

What will make me wow? Being able to use the headset without my eyeglasses or any external accessories, and also, very good displays – meaning: 8K resolution, super Micro-AMOLED, HDR… I don’t worry about the UX, Apple always nails it in that regard.
