my dad became a programmer when I was young (we’re talking 80s), and I think its always been “people upgrade their computers every 4 years” – with reality being anything like 3-6 yrs.

I am currently using a 12″ MacBook from early 2016, which is unfortunately no longer supported with major software releases. So I’m stuck on Monterey. It’s on its last leg at this point since I’ve been using it each and every day for the past seven years. Battery capacity is practically gone, processing speed is very bad and it only has 8gb of ram. I plan to upgrade to the baseline M3 with no modifications. I don’t do intensive tasks all the much since this is just my personal computer for work whilst I have a separate dedicated gaming windows laptop. Storage hasn’t been an issue on my MacBook and I only ever really have 2/3 apps open at once. 5.53gb of memory was used as of typing this.

I don’t know how 8gb would run on an Apple silicon chip. Since I’ve never used a laptop with one before. Again, I rarely do intensive things like rendering. I would bump it up to 16gb for $200 more (I do have a $100 voucher). Then again, that does bring the price closer to the M3 Pro chip model that starts with 18gb of unified memory. But I don’t want to spend more for a faster chip with speeds I do not particularly need, including it compromises battery life on the 14″ model. Nor do I desire a bigger laptop like the 16″ as it is both heavier and more expensive, of course.

Mentally, I am not adamant on upgrading ASAP but I don’t particularly desire to wait for the new MacBook Air either. So if anyone is willing to share their views on this, I would appreciate it.

Changing battery can make those old machines usable again, with the speed they had before but obviously with the limitations of no more software support. Firefox maintains the compatibility and updates

    • Carson Lujan

      November 3, 2023 at 4:19 pm

I’d change the battery, that’s a simple fix. If i can even find someone who would support this old of a MacBook for a decent price. Especially how it has long been discontinued.

But even then, I am tired of the slow speed this laptop has. I desire something faster + the greater efficiency that comes alone with it.

      November 3, 2023 at 4:33 pm

I understand. Me too, I’m ok with my macbook of old age, but often desire something more fast or capable. Changing battery was something that I did myself, was not easy, probably will not do a second time. Now, I linger between a m3 imac and a m3 max 16 macbook pro. Two very different things, I know.. 🙂

I have a the same 12” MacBook released in early 2016. Just wondering do you have any audio issues with it? Mine is locked on mute without it being set on mute and I have to type stuff into the terminal to temporarily fix it but this issue always comes back. 😞

    • Carson Lujan

      November 3, 2023 at 7:16 pm

@Lucy I actually did experience this problem myself around two years ago for several months, so you aren’t alone.

The only way I fixed it was to restart my MacBook, but just like you, it was a temporary fix. All I could do really was to update my laptop whenever an update came out. But with being stuck on Monterey, that doesn’t really happen anymore. But at the very least the problem has never occurred again. So best to check if you have any available software updates and see if that fixes it.

As a longtime owner with everything from top of the range studios to top of the range 16” MBP, if you’re looking for performance it’s still PC. Apple works for video editing because of the built in encoders. But that’s it.

With the cash reserves Apple has on hand pushing out hardware shaders and ray tracing along with real time GPU memory management are all good steps, but why they did acquire a AAA gaming studio like Blizzard Activision to have a top tier title ready at launch using the new features would have said more about being serious about gaming than anything else.

    • Tony Burzio

      November 3, 2023 at 8:13 pm

That’s because Apple realized that the founders of Blizzard are no longer at the company, and are looking for funding.

Really impressed with X Elite and M3 Max. The X Elite seems like it will dominate the M3 in almost all aspects. And the M3 Max is a proper “desktop replacement” laptop chip which will give Intel/AMD headaches. However, really disappointed Apple nerfed the M3 Pro, the poor base RAM/SSD for M3 macs and still having dumb 1x external monitor limit on the M3

Sales and marketing have taken over Apple and pushed out the product focus. Apple silicon is amazing but the confusing product line and lack of focus sound like early 90’s Apple.

I don’t think that’s much of a battle…ARM is probably the future…but, I got burned by gaming. Mind you, I didn’t get a MacBook Pro thinking I’d have a prime gaming machine. Valve kind of dropped their mic with Counter-Strike 2 and how they took the game away from Mac users. Anyway…that was, actually, a driver which sent me to trading it up for a gaming laptop.

4:02 isn’t saying a for profit company did something because they want to make money, profit, … “a boost in sale”,
like saying people eat steak because they want to stay alive?
because, sales, money, profit, is a given. it’d more informative, interesting, answering why they did the specific thing as opposed to all the other money making moves they could’ve done.

8 GB! The only reason we have 18 GB and 36 GB variance is due to low yield of m3 chips. To reduce complexity they skipped the memory manager. That’s why we have 6×3=18gb. Also noticed the bandwidth is lower compared to last generation because they can’t utilize all 4 slots.

Well I mean… Mac is the original. It’s better for almost everything. No question about it. But yes I would still buy myself a PC simply because I see PC as a gaming device. I like consoles because theyre simpler to use. But PC is a cool fun graphical intensive gaming console. Mac isnt. And the only reason why Mac isnt is because developers aren’t supporting the Mac for now. But they will in the future. And once they do, PC will kinda go extinct since thats the only real advantage the PC has at the moment. Otherwise, Mac is way more worth the money because you get a longer lasting computer with more powerful software.

SD XElite is 50% faster than M2 for multithread performance. M3 is 35% faster. So XElite is still 15% faster than the M3, and at lower power consumption. I guess it’s too early to say who ‘squashed’ who yet, so watch the space till mid ’24.

No one who actually needs processing power is dumb enough to buy a hardware locked laptop. No serious PC gamer is using a chiclet keyboard and 14″ screen. Fortunately for Apple, they’ve cornered the market on dumdums with money.
