Yeah, as a public health researcher who was trained by a financial historian, I know that life expectancy at birth, you see a dramatic improvement over the past couple hundred years, but if you look at life expectancy at older ages, while you still see an improvement, it’s not nearly as dramatic. We know that Ramses II the Great lived to about 90, for example.

Preventative contraception methods were almost exclusively used by the elites in Rome. Women did not “uprise” against anyone trying to take away that right because the overwhelming majority of women did not know something like this existed.
Also, not picking an emperor, or a few, that did objectively good deeds that led to the well being of the roman people is not only wrong of you to do, it is purposefully leaving the audience ignorant.
It’s crucial to avoid applying contemporary moral and ethical standards retroactively when assessing historical figures.
She is obviously very knowledgable on the subject, but she needs to drop the modern lens of “every emperor was bad because of autocracy” and look objectively at their writings and actions as emperors.
Augustus: Golden age of literature, reorganized admin system, created postal system.
Trajan: Created welfare programs, and oversaw the construction of forums and markets across the empire
I could go on for a few more of my favorites but I can’t fit anymore words in this comment lol.
@hydraavux8636
November 28, 2023 at 7:53 pm
I should prob add for anyone about to attack me on negatives these and other emperors had during their time:
This isn’t about condoning or ignoring the negative aspects of their reigns, such as autocracy or the reliance on slavery. Instead, it’s about recognizing the historical context in which these emperors operated and evaluating their contributions to Roman society, governance, architecture, and culture.
So yes, slavery=bad and autocracy=bad form of government (although, I would argue that the entire governing system the romans had prob worked out better than a democratic republic would have logistically functioned at the time. That is a different convo tho lol)

November 29, 2023 at 2:20 pm
I think the craziest story I’ve ever heard about the Roman Emperors is how in 69 AD Rome had 4 emperors. And that’s because:
Nero died in 68 AD and was succeeded by Galba. Galba died at the hands of the Praetorian guard… the very soldiers whose job it is to protect the emperor ironically enough.
Galba was succeeded by Otto… who ended up killing himself not too long later
Otto was succeeded by Vitellius… who died 250 days later and was succeeded by Vespasian
If one story is to be believed, the Emperors died so frequently it reached a point where sculptors built statues with removable heads so that when the next one took over, they could just sculpt the head and put it on the body instead of sculpting a whole new figure

13:20 I think it’s a misconception that women couldn’t vote, they could have considerable political influence.
I think it’s better to say that each household had 1 vote. Sure usually the male was ‘the decider’ but that underestimates the Roman woman.
Roman woman also ran the household, and that was a big job. It was very often a 50/50 power share.
Watch HBO Rome if you want to get a feel for it.

@RoxyLuffer
November 29, 2023 at 7:20 pm
Gladiators were actually QUITE Famous, and probably some of the most HEALTHY people in Rome. They were RARELY killed, because while they knew how to kill, and could fight, it was more of a SHOW than the brutal bloody thing that everyone expects it to be. Wealthy people could even pay to have gladiators fight at private events, and if they wanted one to die, they had to pay a rather large fee for the death of a gladiator at their private event. Gladiators were the Roman age Action Heroes, and made LOTS of money for themselves, and their “Stable”.

Could you do a video on why the Germanic and Slavic people who have no connection to ancient Rome and Greece are trying to claim these civilizations? They even created a meaningless term “Western civilization’ although Greece shares its history with the Mddle East and Rome never ruled over the Germanic and Slavic people.

@S-PostLibrary50
November 30, 2023 at 7:53 pm
While Rome never ruled over Germanic and Slavic people, they had influence on both, culturally and genetically. Over the course of centuries Roman people’s population and technology naturally spread and influenced these places and populations just as much as the places Rome directly controlled. Even the Scandinavia’s were eventually colonized by roman settlers who interbred with the natives. Pretty much everybody in Europe and the Mediterranean shares their heritage with people who lived in Rome proper, and they can absolutely trace their culture to it.

i really don’t like her answer about the “best” roman emperor..yeah we as a society have move a bit in ~2000 years,the question wasn’t about how a roman emperor would fare today,but in the context of his time and situation there has to be an objectively better reign than the rest,you set can parameters whatever way you want but there’s has to be a better period overall

Speaking of daily life, what were the aspirations of common people in Rome? Those who are not the elites or gladiators or emperors or slaves. I mean the man on the street. Great video. But I think you were a bit unfair on the best emperor question. Sure there are many bad or incompetent emperors. Some who were ruthless but pragmatic. But if there was one who was estimable to being good, in my opinion, it would be Antoninus Pius.
A wise and frugal emperor who gave a lasting peace of 23 years. Which in itself is incredible considering the martial society he inhabited and the many enemies, large and small, within and without, the borders of the empire. Leaving a great economic surplus which many emperors can not say they did.
Not only the many aquaducts for free drinking water and using his personal wealth in help for provinces wrecked by natural disasters, he helped with the enfranchisement of freed slaves. Yes he didn’t end it (would have been political suicide if he tried) but he made their lives FAR more tolerable than any other nation in the ancient world.
If Marcus Aurelius has nothing but praise to say about you then you are alright in my book.

Every argument made on roman concrete is also present in modern concrete. When calculateing crack failure, we calculate how large cracks can be selfrepaired and design our construsctions thereafter. Modern cancrete is much better due to addetives like plastecizers and silica that allow us to better compose the concrete for the task ahead. The idea to reinforce concrete was invented in 1885 long after the romanempire had fallen.
