@Vivalaleta GodfreyA) You can’t do better than nuclear. Even if we figured out the tech to do solar/wind, nuclear is the better option. It takes less resources, uses less land, produces less waste, etc.

      B) We’re in a global crisis. We need to get emissions as low as possible NOW. Even if solar/wind would be theoretically better once the tech is perfected, we can’t afford to wait until then.

@Anonymous well I own my own solar system. I know what goes into the mining and manufacturing of the small lithium ion batteries, and industrial grade batteries would require even more. So the trade off is we don’t pollute the environment with fossil fuels or nuclear energy, but we do it with the mining process, and other toxic waste from the production of lithium batteries and solar panels? There is no “clean” energy… maybe a lesser damaging one but all of these products need manufacturing plants with power demands that far exceed any sustainable solar or wind energy technology…
The only real answer is less use… and with 9 billion people and growing I don’t see us being able to cleanly produce these methods of renewable energy.

    • pironfistgaming

      September 20, 2023 at 12:55 am

One person can’t know everything and they are not separate. They are interlinked. There are economists who focus on climate change and it’s shown that there is a lot of money to be made for countries who take it seriously. Australia is gearing up to make green steel. It will increase the return on investment for our iron ore mines by a ridiculous amount. We’ve also been electrifying the mining fleet which has greatly reduced maintenance costs.
On top of this, the economics of no action is extremely expensive. This year alone 23 disasters in the US have cost nearly $60billion total, breaking it’s previous record with still 3 months to go. Next year is predicted to be much worse due to El Nino adding to the disasters. In Australia, we are having giant floods and fires constantly. Climate change is predicted to cost Australia half a trillion in lost growth, destruction and loss of life. The Philippines would see even greater costs compared to their GDP as they are sitting right in the pacific ocean, which has soaked up ridiculous amounts of energy in the last ten years and is now releasing it. The economics of keeping it below 1.5 degrees just makes sense.
However, the practicality of electrifying grids is another thing. In Western Australia my friend is working on this problem and without huge investment, which our government keeps refusing to do, they can’t even account for the cars, never mind the electrification of stoves.

The fallacy that a lot of jobs will disappear during the green energy transition is a scare tactic used mostly on the right. Many jobs such as electricians, construction, etc are exactly the same for green energy projects. Other workers such as those who handle fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas will need to be retrained for the new jobs which will be generated by the new green energy economy.

    • Silverlined_69

Hey guys – we have a decent sized wind farm up the road from our village that is supposed to supply our electricity – rarely see them moving. When they do they have to time the change over perfectly or the whole area power cuts causing mayhem for a few hours. Prefer nuclear thanks.

    • Andy Tong

      September 19, 2023 at 8:07 pm

Solar plus wind is a good idea that is turning out to be a lot of hot air for countries that tumbled head long into it. Better to focus on nuclear with the remaining fossil fuel we have instead of spending the last drops of feasible oil into turbines and solar cells and batteries that require lots of fossil fuel for mining and manufacturing while creating lots of future toxic waste.

    • Nemanja Paunovic

      September 20, 2023 at 5:36 am

The wind farms are turned off when there is too much electrisity in the grid, because coal and nuclear powerplants can not be downsized so easyly.

This is INSANE. To quote DOOMBERG, “In the battle between platitudes and physics, physics is UNDEFEATED” !!! The challenges of the Philippines are undeniable. SHAME on TED to sponsor this. NO DATA here — all hand waving and platitudes. If the Philippines allow these mis-guided ignorants – there will be a great reckoning when the economy collapses, people go hungry, crime soars. Another saying from physicists, “Solar is a cheap way to get EXPENSIVE energy; nuclear is an expensive way to get cheap energy.” Will someone wake up ???!

  17. Charlie Sheen

    September 19, 2023 at 2:50 pm

Who said this is “green” energy? Also, it’s not cheap and it’s not clean. For solar you need to destroy forests and make a Mars-like lifeless environment in order for the panels to be efficient. Similar story with wind, except that blades kill birds directly by hitting them. Not to mention that solar panels and wind turbine blades are impossible to recycle and they will keep polluting the earth for thousands of years. Coal is cheaper than wind and solar, so that argument is also invalid. Better invest in nuclear.

  18. Maroon92

    September 19, 2023 at 3:23 pm

Solar and wind energy plants need to be placed in location restrictions due to it being pollutant on the ecosystem. There is so many alternative energy we can use like sustainable biofuels, mini, fast, small nuclear reactors, hydrogen energy and landfall/waste/sewage to energy.

    • BangDroid

      September 20, 2023 at 11:13 am

How does solar pollute an ecosystem? And wind for that matter?

  19. LTVoyager

    September 19, 2023 at 3:30 pm

Anyone who thinks they can depend 100% on solar and wind is living in an alternate reality. It simply isn’t possible without massive and cheap energy storage. With today’s storage options and economics, every MW of intermittent generation added (solar and wind) requires the addition of MW of conventional power generation to provide power when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing. That is a simple fact.

“In any system of energy, Control is what consumes energy the most.
No energy store holds enough energy to extract an amount of energy equal to the total energy it stores.
No system of energy can deliver sum useful energy in excess of the total energy put into constructing it.
This universal truth applies to all systems.
Energy, like time, flows from past to future” (2017).

  22. Bill Norris

    September 19, 2023 at 4:58 pm

Rubbish.. Electricity use in the U.S. ALONE is over 4,000,000,000 kilowatt-hours annually. Unless we are willing to embrace dueling ecological disasters, it is insanity.. To supply such a demand, billions of solar panels would need to be built.. There’s huge carbon footprints in their manufacture.. The costs of REPLACING them roughly every 15 years.. The fact that we would be creating HUGE heat islands, yes, solar panels create plenty of excess heat when operating and run down like batteries.. Then the windmills. These negatively affect coastal areas and can harm sea life..They ALSO require regular expensive maintenance and replacement about EVERY 15 years! Then there are the unintended consequences.. All BAD ideas!

    • Samuel Zev

      September 19, 2023 at 8:19 pm

Id like to point out to you that those points are real but technology is fast improving to mitigate those drawbacks. Some windmills are now designed blade less to stop bird deaths and solar panels are now built to create energy from falling rainwater if it’s rainy or at night. Furthermore a company in germany created foldable thin solar cells that can strapped on any building for long term use and its made of recycled silicon. The energy production is also doubled with better battery technology that saves more power. Change is coming and so are improvements whether one likes it or not. Norway is a prime example

    • Bill Norris

      September 19, 2023 at 9:23 pm

@samuelzev4076  I get it, friend.. The future GENERALLY implies improvements.. Therefore, it seems rational to wait until the DAY comes that super panels are commercially viable options with demonstrated reliability, efficiency, and longevity before investing another 5 trillion in SHORT term solutions.. One opinion, peace..

    • Bill Norris

      September 19, 2023 at 9:36 pm

@samuelzev4076  SOMEDAY, fusion will render all of these inefficient solutions obsolete..

    • Samuel Zev

      September 19, 2023 at 9:48 pm

@Bill Norris that day is fast approaching. Even hydrogen powered cars are already efficient just not mass produced because of the cost but it will go down eventually both for nuclear and hydrogen

  23. Schöne Zukunft

    September 19, 2023 at 7:18 pm

Sun and Wind are our cheapest source of energy. Combined with batteries we can build a sustainable supply with energy which cost much less than our current system.

    This ist the simple truth.
