Advertising is a weapon. A weapon wielded by corporations to manipulate you into purchasing what they want you to purchase and they do not have your best interest in mind.
Data mining, via social media, browsing history or listening to you via things like Alexa is the whetstone that sharpens that weapon.

Who cares? Android phones eavesdrop on you all the time: even denying microphone-access to all apps will get you targeted ads about what you said to a friend 20 minutes ago. It’s a disgrace this is allowed to happen (in the EU) it makes pretty much all privacy laws useless.

March 28, 2025 at 11:24 am
@@CedroCronExactly.
Most smartphones have a similar A.I. feature that listens for commands nowadays too.
Even with my settings on a limited capacity, it still keeps a history of how I use my device in order to create the most optimal functionality for what I use it for most.
This is in the agreement all users must consent to before they can use said device.
I get folk worry about their privacy though for the vast majority of us, all this really boils down to is targeted advertising.
Personally I can accept this, anyone who is concerned they’re so easily manipulated, you’ve already been brainwashed by advertising on cinemas/tv/radio – this is just the latest way to sell you products.

@romulusnr

For the WIDE majority of users, it already was sending commands to Amazon. Especially seeing as the early devices would not have the capability to internally interpret human speech on their own.
The only thing that is changing is that the option VERY FEW users set on newer devices to not send commands to amazon (very much decreasing the abilities of the devices) will not be usable anymore.
I get being wisely cautious, but I don’t get misleading and dishonest paranoia.
