Amazon invested another $2.75 billion into AI company Anthropic last week. The flush of cash completes a planned $4 billion deal between the companies. The move signifies the sheer amount of capital in the AI arms race from big tech companies: Microsoft has invested $10 billion in OpenAI, Volkswagen invested $2.6 billion in Argo AI, and Anthropic received another $2 billion from Google.

Essentially, big tech companies are competing via their checkbooks in a space where they can’t take majority stakes – so we end up with each betting that their investments can develop the future of AI.
