Investors tend to think in daily and quarterly numbers, leading to a system that can harm the future health of the economy and planet. Michelle Greene explains how the Long-Term Stock Exchange is reimagining public markets by holding companies to forward-thinking standards of diversity and inclusion, employee investment and environmental responsibility — and generating better outcomes for everyone involved. (This virtual conversation, hosted by TED business curator Corey Hajim, was recorded June 24, 2020.)

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design — plus science, business, global issues, the arts and more. There´s one big problem about this idea. Eventhough companies would make decisions long term, the investors will still make decisions based on 3-6 months or 6-12 months pediods typically. There is no workaround there. How are you supposed to change the behavior of investors by changing the companys way of doing profit long-term agaist doing it short-term?… AND HOW? How do you actually do it/planned to do it? How can you change the way companies have worked for over 200 years? And why would it be any better? There´s nothing wrong in our system. Who would it benefit to change a system that works allready?

The funny thing is, there will be no dividends under this model. That’s the point. What are you investing in if there is no return? You’re just playing a game of financial hot potato, hoping someone else will be willing to buy the stock for more later on. It’s a 100% capital gains benefit model. It’s foolishness.

    • Ville Kaapro

      August 26, 2020 at 4:08 am

@Arcux i’m pretty sure you missed something. I make 5% on dividends only.

    • Arcux

      August 26, 2020 at 1:57 pm

@Ville Kaapro Yes, because they company you invested in cares about profits. Ms. Greene’s proposed system would stop doing that and would focus on “long-term” goals, like social change, etc. Her plan would remove dividends from the investing equation.

@Arcux Yes you´re right! And I don´t even invest in companies that do not think about the climate or the community or health, I care about those things… AND I also care about profits, without profits I do not invest. So I need the company to grow and make more sales and better profit all the time, or I will sell that company from my portfolio no questions asked and buy a better one.

Weve got high frequency trading computers trading in what is it now, like the femtosecond range or faster and this idiot thinks her long term stock exchange is going to be the way forward? Seriously? What a crock. Yep I’m sure more diversity in the workplace will sort it all out… Perhaps what we might need is diversity of thought rather than race, rather than all of you pushing the same tired narratives, we might get some different, superior, ideas.

I can’t wait for the “woke” experiment to finally prove out to be a failure so we can get back to sanity and practices that are actually consistent with productive human nature.

The only way for the stock market to work for most people is if the workers hold 51% of every company’s shares. And even then it would still allow for grave disparities between productive and investment capital, and would therefore require heavy regulations. Nothing else is even worth discussing.

    • Arcux

      August 25, 2020 at 11:40 pm

Listen to what she says: Commitments to diversity & inclusion and taking a “certain approach” to the environment. The idea is to use crowd funding to prop up otherwise unsustainable policies and use their position to intimidate customers and suppliers into compliance with these policies. It’s pretty insidious garbage!

    Long-Term Stock Exchange Policies/Rules:
    1) Adopting publicly a policy on diversity and inclusion
    2) Commit to investing in the long-term in their employees
    3) Commit to taking a “certain approach” to the environment
    “….Bunch of other standards…”

Looks like they’re using crowd funding to prop up unsustainable, anti-profitable progressive policies, which will be used by the corporations in this cabal to extort and intimidate suppliers and customers into compliance.

    Good thing it won’t work.

This is great but I think Michelle should have done a better job of emphasizing the strong connection between ethical behavior and long term thinking. The longer term your goals the less difference there is between the ethical choice. The very definition of ethics could arguably be long term success. People think that ethical decisions are those that are best for everyone but in the long term everyone’s interests are intertwined.

Hi. The hashtag SaveTedRussia is written by people from the Soviet Union. Very few people speak English fluently. There is a channel on Russian-language YouTube that translates original Ted videos. Monetization on this channel is disabled, translators live on donations from the patron. All videos in Russian contain links to the original TED videos. The other day, the translators received an email that Ted would block the YouTube channel. A huge number of people who do not speak English and watch Ted in translation will be deprived of excellent educational content. Therefore, they urge leaders not to restrict access to knowledge because of language discrimination. They offer to take popular translators to the TED team and continue to please Russian-speaking viewers with new videos. Thank you for your attention.

Why would an investor, invest in this kind of company vs. a company which generates higher profit at the expense of equitability/morality?
