The AVP is not meant to do what this does. It has actual computer hardware and is really their first gen product in the VR space. The Quest has failed for years to do what Apple already accomplished. When it comes to gaming, specifically, the Quest 3 is way ahead. Very different products aimed at doing different things.

@@BankHead980 the AVP was never meant to be a product for everyone, so if people can’t admit that’s the case, they will definitely see it as a failure. The lenses and screens alone in that thing cost a fortune, then you’re adding a Mac Mini inside.

I’m curious what Apple will do in the future as they bring prices down. If they really start investing into their Arcade platform, I could see it being huge once it hits a grand or so. AI is going to allow companies to produce software extremely quickly.

The one headset which was a disappointment was the PSVR2. They made a capable product and then did absolutely nothing to support it. Not a thing. You can’t even get replacement cables and getting new controllers isn’t easy last I checked. The software lineup is basically just Quest games and a handful of others.

The one you can afford. Quest 3s and Quest 3 have the same internals and play the same games, so it comes down to whether you want to pay an extra $200 for more storage space and higher reolution. Or, if you don’t care about playing newer games/intend to mostly play pcvr, you could get a used quest 2. It’ll play almost any game out right now, and it uses the same lens and screen as the quest 3s.

Question for anyone, I’ve played these a few times and really liked them but didn’t know if they were worth it in the long run or will it sit after a few uses…..

    • @John-z1t6y

      October 14, 2024 at 12:43 pm

It’s definitely worth it. Mixed Reality technology is definitely the future and will give you a way better long term experience than “old” solutions like consoles/PC/phones. It is very immersive and isn’t just good for playing games but also for doing more efficient work, consuming content like movies and shows on a giant 3D theater screen and hanging out with people in social experiences that feel like you’re actually there with people.

I recommend getting the Quest 3 if you can afford it since the better lenses and display will give you a clearer/more convincing virtual reality. But if you can’t then the Quest 3S for $299 is an incredible value.

You will get way more out of that than anything else. New games and experiences are constantly coming and you will never get bored since there are unlimited things to do. Meta is literally investing billions into this future to be ahead of everyone else and they are!

    • @smittyvanjagermanjenson182

      October 14, 2024 at 5:20 pm

That question can only be answered by the individual. If you find VR to be awesome and plan to use it for whatever VR software you deem worthwhile, then yes it’ll get a lot of use.

If you feel like it would be boring after a few uses, or the magic has worn off after a month and you throw in the closet, then no. The Quest community can’t encourage you to love VR and Mixed reality as they do if you weren’t into it to begin with.

Personally I love VR and the found the Quest 2 to be a great purchase. However I will admit that it got far less use than my current Quest 3, since I had to use the 2 with my PC to elevate the experience. The quest 3 on the other hand has gotten loads more use thanks to it being more comfortable and having that full color passthrough, and the strength to not need to rely on my PC for majority of use.
The Quest 3S having the added capabilities of the 3 is an absolute steal in my opinion.

I wish this comparison was against the quest 3 rather than the 2. I understand that the quest 2 is in far more hands currently. But if anyone is considering buying a headset they are likely comparing the 3 and 3s, doesn’t matter what the quest 2 is capable of.

    • @smittyvanjagermanjenson182

      October 14, 2024 at 5:10 pm

That would be a boring comparison. The only difference is the the Quest 3 having pancake lenses, for better clarity when watching content or productivity. That’s it’s, comparison over.

The quest 2 is the more widely adopted system and its extremely weak. Not everyone is looking to spend $500 on VR, so its a very easy upgrade path for quest 2 users to just buy the 3S and gain 90% of the Quest 3 functionality.

    • @loganzrude

      October 14, 2024 at 5:14 pm

@@smittyvanjagermanjenson182 but people are debating which headset to upgrade to, I think there are physical differences like the passthrough button, IR indicators, and other minor changes that could sway people.
