    Yuri Gagarin didn’t drink or smoke, and trained all his life, in order to spend 108 minutes outside the USSR.

    Because the Soviet caplules returned on land, instead of water splashdowns like US capsules, the Soviet capsules had last second retro rockets that fired just before landing to slow them down. However, in the first few landings, they hadn’t worked out the kinks in the retro system,. So, at a few thousand feet, they fired an ejection seat and Gagarin landed via parachute. This was a big secret until quite recently, because according to the International Aeronauticsl rules, the “pilot” had to take off and land in this air/space craft for the flight to “officially” count.
