… are you saying this because the speaker is a Black woman? Is the mere existence of people who aren’t straight white men “woke” now?

@blank “If you don’t like women’s basketball as much as men’s basketball you’re probably not that great of a person.” That had a pretty woke feeling to it.

@Jamie Dorsey So, why don’t you like women’s basketball as much as men’s basketball?
Jamie Dorsey
October 8, 2023 at 3:50 pm
@safaiaryuTo be honest, I’m not much of a fan of either. But in general men’s sports are more athletic and more exciting. I think this accounts for the majority of the difference in ratings, I don’t really buy the argument that its because of sexism or something like that. Ronda Rousey is an exception that proves the rule, she’s been a big draw in the UFC and has gotten paid in proportion to that popularity.

Would have been great if something taught you to respect and love everything, including animals. But nah, on that specific matter, everyone can give into the brainwashing by the meat lobby. Only on that specific matter.

Fandom is incredible. It’s inspiring. The creativity that fandom invokes in people can be life-changing. People realize their lifelong interests in all sorts of things through fandom: writing, art, crafts, business, math, design, film and video editing, sewing and fashion design, communication, critical thinking, literary and film analysis, website design, forum moderation, character analysis, character creation, plotting, technology, speech and presentations, even stuff like health, self-esteem, and so, SO much more that I can’t even think of right now. George R.R. Martin started out writing fanfic and he’s now one of the most famous and successful authors in the world. The person who invented cell phones was influenced by Star Trek. I got into teaching high school Latin and World Literature due to my love of a book series based on ancient Greece. (Yeah, Latin, not Greek. Ancient Greek is really freaking difficult, Latin clicked with me better.) Like, practically everyone I know has been influenced by a fandom, whether they’ll admit it or not. This woman is spot-on, people treat fandom like a bad word, but it’s actually incredibly important!!

TED is trash for sandbagging Coleman Hughes’ color blindness on race talk all because some influential people where “upset” about the subject.

I’d consider myself a fan, I love introducing other people to the things I love. I want new people to feel accepted and included. I know the type of people she refers to as fanatics and they exist. I don’t like that all gatekeeping is lumped into that sort of grognard trope. I want new people to enjoy the things I enjoy, I don’t want them to turn my D&D game into something I no longer enjoy, something that no longer resembles the thing I wanted to share. If you like my thing but want to make it your own thing, great. Just do it over there and let me keep my own thing.

There are lessons to be gleaned from any art form be it sports, drama, music or literature and you don’t have wave a banner or join a fan club to appreciate that . I thought this Ted Talk was going to be about being engaged in learning , working hard and owning it which is my definition of a nerd !

I think this will be better titled as “10 (stuff) I learned from popular figures/characters (that I like)!”
In my opinion, (Fandom/Fan) which is actually not the same as (Nerd), are two much deeper concepts than what the talker was explaining.
