Sugar intake gets blamed for a lot of health issues — but when it comes to yeast infections, it’s almost definitely not the culprit. Debunking myths (and strongly suggesting we skip heavily-marketed detox cleanses), Dr. Jen Gunter explains why having some yeast in the body is normal, how to know when it’s a problem — and what to (safely) do about it. For more on how your body works, tune into her podcast, Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter, from the TED Audio Collective.

Think you know how your body works? Think again! In this TED original series, Dr. Jen Gunter will share the truth about what’s *really* going on inside you. For more, tune into her podcast, Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter:

“70% of people will have yeast in their vagina”? That is such a surprising fact, since other studies show that only 49.58% of people actually HAVE a vagina. Thanks TED!

@Toni I agree. I’ve read The Candida Cure and it appears that **too much** sugar, yeast, gluten, wheat, white rice, alcohol, etc to the point of causing imbalances absolutely can contribute to an overgrowth of yeast. Maybe a little sugar won’t immediately cause it to happen, but over time it can. This woman gives misleading info and then no counter point to explain what supposedly does cause yeast infections.

Why does the video not match the description? You did not actually explain what causes them. If you actually do RE-SEARCH, it’s the bacteria from animal products. Why didn’t you even mention animal products ONCE?! Chicken being the worse culprit, as they’ve found that you literally can NOT CLEAN EVERYTHING UP! Chicken’s bacteria is one of the few that will NEVER be totally cleaned and you are ALWAYS transferring the bacteria around. Especially, if you’re the one that cleans it before cooking, as that just sends the levels through the roof. A good place to start is at Nutrition Facts here on YT, but I believe they get most of their research from PUBMED.

Wonderful way to explain a subject where we know some things but not everything.

FYI because of the title, I came here for info on yeast overgrowth in general, not just in the vagina. I found the video informative and valuable anyway, and glad I clicked, but there may be women who pass it by, but would have watched it if they knew from title that it was specifically for this issue.

I’ve had a lot of yeast infections over the years. I was told from my mid 20’s (reasonably slim then) by many health professionals to curb my sugar, no other info given. By my 50’s, I’ve learned from combating prediabetes that insulin resistance affects your hormones and fertility. From the “getgo”, I’ve never had a normal period and went undiagnosed for well over a decade for endometriosis and PCOS. My GP agrees with me that with the rampant diabetes in my family, I’ve been highly disposed toward it myself and was most likely insulin resistant from puberty. A low-carb diet was finally suggested to me by him two years ago. I researched online and came across several YouTube channels that have taught me so much – FOR FREE – enabling me to lose the weight I’d gained over 15 years, clearing my blood tests of red flags, lowering my BP. I still get thrush. I am on Oestradiol skin patches to help with peri-menopausal symptoms. I have learned that if I vary the timing of changing those patches too much, say an hour, then a few days later I end up with thrush. I feel that I’m still a little insulin resistant but my GP won’t test for that, only relying on BSL which doesn’t tell the whole story.
My point of all this is sugar (and carbs) is not directly responsible for yeast infections; but your metabolism of that sugar (and carbs) IS. Metabolic syndrome was the original name for insulin resistance. All type 2 diabetics and pre-diabetics have insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome. Big Pharma medications force your body into accepting glucose via extra insulin, this is why diabetics gain weight – every GP knows that insulin is the fat storing hormone. Big Agriculture has warped our ideas of what is a balanced diet; filling so much of it with grains (carbs) in such an insidious way as to not realise you are eating too much in general. Diabetics can reverse their condition “simply” (but carefully if they are medicated) by cutting out most of their carbs, and forcing their body to become insulin receptive again. This will cause their body to burn fat for energy instead of the nutrient-poor carbs. Fat does not spike blood insulin levels even to half that of carbs. Basically, we need to prepare and eat the type of meals that our great-grand-parents did; before Big Agriculture got too greedy and over-processed everything.

@Kaye Radcliffe Yes! Health Coach Kait (Canadian YouTuber living in South Ausrtralia) and KenDBerryMD (Dr YouTuber in Tennessee) are very good at explaining things to lay people. If you like longer videos, Low Carb Down Under (Dr YouTuber) started up about 2 years ago and they upload webinars with conversations afterward. I had already lost most of my excess weight before I found the last one (I’m Aussie), but I like their more in-depth info – I just have to be in the mood for a longer video at the time.

    • Lynette Hannan

      November 11, 2022 at 1:18 am

@Gregory klaus Everything is boggy and humid amidst the flooded areas. I’m in Central Victoria, so it’s nowhere near as bad as in NSW or QLD (up north), but we do have communities isolated by flooded roads. Everyone is just sick of it all, it’s been going on for months and it looks to be continuing through summer. Some in QLD have been flooded 4 times in the last 3 months – it’s very depressing. I just got back from shopping – had a fit of coughing so bad I couldn’t breathe. Get back in the car to hear the radio saying to stay inside to avoid the storm asthma today; so that’s how I am. I’m not asthmatic, but I do get these coughing fits on these types of days. I used to love a good storm…

Could you add ‘vaginal’ to “vaginal yeast” please? I find it offensive this gender specific topic is marked to the general. It is misleading since there actually are multiple types of yeast infection that can infect non-binary women…

Doing a study before and after someone has a drink isn’t how that would work. You’ll need a group of people on a certain diet and a group of people who aren’t. And also the same groups of people with a history of frequent yeast infections.

Candida overgrowth is a real thing. And this TED video seems like it’s paid for by the sugar industry.

Basically everyone in the West eats way too much sugar. Including me.

I notice a marked difference in reduction of yeast infection symptoms when I stop eating sugar. I always clear sugar, alcohol, and gluten from my diet to help yeast infections go away, because I’ve noticed it helps. I’m 35 and have yeast infections about 3x/yr. I can usually tell when one is stirring up and can now avoid it from become a full blown infection when I abstain from sugar caffeine gluten and alcohol. I don’t notice as much of a difference from caffeine (I never put sugar in my coffee and don’t drink soda) but eliminate it anyways. So… I’d be really curious to learn what sources this persons data are evolved from, if there were more than one double blind randomized controlled trials with a biostatistician? Please link your resources!! Personal experience tells me this is propaganda and not true. Thanks!
