Hippo do not intend to eat people. Being a herbivore don’t mean you do not eat meat.
Hippos rarely eat meat. Also if a hippo mashes you. Some will go down. It’s a weird myth that herbivores don’t eat meat.

I remember seeing the pupil difference explained by the height of the animal in a zefrank video. Foxes and small cats have slit pupils because they’re lower to the ground and more useful to see through grass because it’s a lot of vertical lines? Or something like that. Whereas wolves and big cats have round pupils because they’re taller than grass so it wouldn’t really benefit them. Interestingly enough, goats have horizontal pupil that widen their field of vision and their eyes actually rotate to keep their pupils parallel to the ground. Easier to spot predators.

Call me crazy, but for all the downplay that this vet attributes towards the option of being shot by a dart gun vs’s the borderline criminal behavior the vet makes out the method of using a soft cloth with some chemicals on it to be gently placed over an animals mouth for a brief moment, after which the animal will gently pass out for (x) amount of time.

Recently been listening to the bad science in the world of chiropractors, but I’ve worked with horses who LOVED their chiropractor and who very clearly react to the treatment in the way they move under saddle. Is this placebo? Is there something different about animal chiropractors? Amazing how these vids just leave me with more knowledge AND more questions

I noticed you mentioned collared peccary as one of the wild pigs. I read recently that they are different than pigs and are not ‘true pigs’. I’m not sure why taxonomists make that distinction but could you elaborate?

13:50 is fascinating! It makes sense when I think about a larger cat’s surface area to volume ratio, as a cat species gets bigger their insides get bigger much faster than their surface area and thus fur ingestion does!

Right off the bat he’s wrong. I don’t know if hippos ever eat people, but they aren’t completely herbivorous. It’s a recent discovery, when resources are scarce, hippos can eat meat, but they only when desperate.

Giraffes don’t have horns, they have ossicones. Ossicones are permanently covered in skin and fur, unlike horns and antlers. Also, horns are actually a sheath of keratin covering live bone.

I’d add tot he horse question that horses often get injury or illness of their 3 good legs if having to keep weight off a broken leg, and more often than not it is this additional injury that kills them not the initial break

9:34 Horse can’t race as good so it’s more strategic and budget friendly to kill the horse and replace them with another horse. Are there other options like prosthetics? Yes. Can they live long, happy and healthy lives. Yes as proven by many racing and farm sanctuaries. But taking care of a horse when it can’t give us anything in return isn’t very productive is it? Easier to just kill them and make a nice soap or sandwich. The real question is how is it 2022 and we still can’t fix our disgusting ideology that animals only have moral worth if we can commodify them in some way?

I love this video, but I can’t help but wonder if domestic cats have slit pupils because they’ve been domesticated for 10,000 years, and maybe when they were first being domesticated, there were a few cats that had slit pupils due to their genes/a mutation in their genes, and the ppl looked at the slit pupils and went “I like these eyes better” and then breeded them to have split pupils.

0:34 this is so true, i was doing some internship at wildlife sanctuary, I found that some macacas are having tumor in their stomach we couldn’t notice it because the macacas were active and eating normally until we do the medical checkup and find out the tumor already on stage 2-3.

I would rephrase the elephant part here…. The trunk din just keep growing over generations, this gives a very wrong understanding of the evolution processes… I would say that over generations, individuals with a longer snot and lips had greater success passing down their genes, so, over generations of naturally selected breeding, trunks developed as we know then today…

I thought the pig question was interesting because my parents have a mini Juliana pig (mini being a relative term, Carl is easily 200lbs at least) and he has a straight tail. So some domesticated pigs don’t have curly tails! I personally like Carl’s straight tail because he wags it all the time which I find super cute and funny.
I really liked the way this vet answered questions though! I love when you all have people on who answer animal questions.

With the dogs and placebos, dogs also lie. They will fake coughs for attention and mimic human behavior especially if their owners are sick they will act sick and them become sick due to other issues usually starvation. Some dogs if they notice a sick dog getting treats they will pretend to be sick and also get the treat and act better afterwards only to suffer a side effect
Some dogs that notice dogs getting better with medicine do better with placebos if they’re also sick, if the dogs are isolated placebos will have no effect as the dog doesn’t think that things are getting better they’re still looking and feeling sick stuck in the same location. Pretty depressing.

My slit pupil theory on smaller cats – follows that; animals that are closer to the ground like snakes might have need a shorter focal length for hunting smaller prey… hence the slit pupils. But idk.

It’s common practice to actually cut off the tails of domestic agricultural pigs, despite being curly. They also shave down their teeth for this same reason. They don’t want them damaging the profits.

Animals tend to have “accents” in different part of the world. Like humans, birds of the same species will sing a slightly altered song in different areas because the acoustics, sound pollution, and temperature affect how song travels.

The placebo effect works on my dog. I had to give her a med that made her sleepy twice a day. After she no longer needed it, I’d give her the treat. She’d go lie down, & take a nap. She still does whenever I give her the treat, & she loves them. It’s fruit gummies snack treats. I just told it over the pill, & give it to her. They’re also good training treats.

Other Horrifying things about horse legs: they sorta store oxygen so when they break their leg they’re now suffocating a little, and their blood is OP so they hemorrhage super easy and that does NOT help their legs, not to mention they spend most of their time standing, so there’s not a good way to get them off a broken leg without like slinging them up

Also, in dark or no lighting situations, even the slit pupils dilate to let in more light, and the get round. The slit is only formed in daylight. Or brightly lit settings. So this argument does not seem to hold up, right?

Regarding the placebo effect: what’s different here, is that a real.placebo effect in humans works without a prior association between the effector and a sensory input ( lika a specific taste, in this case). In the reported scenario, it is very well possible – and in my opinion much more likely – that there is some form of conditioning or some learning at play. So something more “mechanical”, less related to conscious beliefs, than in a real human placebo effect. Something like: the drug elicits a biological response. It is paired with a taste. After some pairings, the taste alone elicits the somatic response. Now, obviously there is some level of central.bervous processing involved – as taste is processed in the brain – but the pathway to the response and the effects in blood don’t need to involve the higher brain structures that are associated with consciousness and beliefs or thoughts. It can happen on a lower level in the brain that acts or reflex-like.
Now, I am not saying these two phenomena (this effect in dogs and the human placebo effect) are completely unrelated. They probably share some pathways and there are similarities. But in humans we can have a placebo effect purely mediated by conscious or pre-conscious thought. That can be culturally transmitted, through reading about something or hearing about something and believing it.

Fun fact, the placebo effect in animals doesn’t even require the animal be given medication, if its an animal that has a history of being cared for by humans just the theater of taking care of the animal does seem to make them feel better

2:12 im no expert but i believe i have your answer, cats are much smaller, hence they deal with more low grass(vertical resolution important) and dark dens of animals(need for quick adjustment to light)

Curly tails, droopy ears, and piebald coloring all appear to be tied to the same genes as temperment domestication. This is a big contributor to these traits in domestic dogs and pigs.

The study of dogs placebo is interesting. I had been thinking of placebo worked on an animal it’d be dogs bcus they perceive human giving them medicine as help.But that study was entirely physical and could the dogs have remembered feeling a bit unhealthy the first time , seems odd.

As with Asian vs western docs who administer acupuncture, faith and intention are frequencies that patients of any species seem to be aware of. If one is raised in a culture where acupuncture is routine, results are more effective. The example given doesn’t actually qualify as placebo, since specific chemical properties associated with the toxic agent are well remembered by sophisticated tissues.

The question about broken horse legs makes me wonder if a lower leg break in a horse is the equivalent of a broken little toe in a human. It sounds like there’s just not much (if anything) you can do, and for a horse since the lower leg is still essential to movement while humans can just manage with the rest of their foot.

Actually it is a fact that having a slitted pupil help smaller felines catch smaller prey that are on the floor. Tigers and Lions will have round eyes because their preys are bigger and they need to focus on them while running. Meanwhile small cats have prey that are most times below their head and they won’t run chasing a prey (most times), instead they leap. Also helps small cats judge smaller distances.
