You can’t control the world — but you can control you. That’s the mantra that took Axios CEO Jim VandeHei, a once “unremarkably unremarkable 20-year-old,” all the way to launching companies and interviewing presidents. He breaks down a career’s worth of observations into five deceptively simple things you can control, and explores why mastering them can change the trajectory of your life. (Recorded at TEDNext 2025 on November 11, 2025)

Persons in a position of privilege are often blind to the fact. Alas. That death-bed story is poignant, though.

This is the story all successful people like to tell. That it is a mindset and everybody can get there. It’s simply not true. The son he adopted is the prime example. Maybe he can flourish now he is in a better environment. Before it was probably about survival.
This message here is really toxic, it’s basically saying that everyone that isn’t successful isn’t trying hard enough
@abemore
May 15, 2026 at 1:54 pm
Yeah, his message is to just do it, but the problem is achieving the mindset to do it.

You see guys, this is what you shouldn’t be doing. The people who just don’t want to work hard, will keep saying that this is toxic, this is not true etc. But the people saying these things are just looking for easy things to do and get successful. But everyone knows life isn’t like that. The reason China is successful and independent is not because they were “non toxic”. They simply worked hard.
Working hard has many benefits. Fitness, health, prosperity. Lazy people will tell you it’s wrong. But don’t fall into that trap.
You can either spend your life working hard and build something big. Or you can keep complaining about toxicity in the message and keep crying throughout the one and only life you have got. The choice is yours.

@MisterMusaafir Or you can spend your life working hard without questioning it and then get spat out with nothing at the end. Which btw. is what normally happens.

There are people that spend all of their time, effort, and energy thinking about big problems that are outside of their control. They get overwhelmed, anxious, and are highly reactive. No good comes from obsessing about the stuff on the news that you can’t move the needle on each day. This speaker is right. Your life can improve by magnitudes if you focus on taking action on what is inside of your direct control. He’s giving a message of personal empowerment.

The illusion of control can do amazing things. Just act as if you had control of anything, and many good things can be made by you.

Each little decision is very big even if they’re small. It’s easy to make bad decisions but you feel unhappier in the long run though in theshort run the dopamine usually feels good. That’s why I’m exhausted by life. Every single day i wake up and have to re-regulate myself, make hundreds of small choices every day. Man, I’m tired.
When he talks about when it gets really bad and still doing the right thing he’s super right, that’s when it counts the most. Especially during addiction
