Math isn’t just for “math kids” — it’s for everyone, says learning expert Shalinee Sharma. She outlines four simple steps to transform your approach to math, creating an environment where any kid can develop a strong mathematical mind. (Recorded at TED@BCG on September 12, 2024)

In my opinion introduce your children to only one concept in maths very humbly and carefully, the compound interest in finance. They’ll keep digging deeper everywhere else in maths by themselves after that.

“because they were… groty” What did she say? I’m unfamiliar with that word. The closest we have here in UK is grotty, but I don’t think she meant that.

I transfered schools in 6th grade where they were already well into geometry. I COULD NOT memorize. So I asked the teacher to explain how she arrived at the theorems I was supposed to memorize. She started to explain how there were standard relationships and PRIVED it to me. After her explanation it all made sense and I was able to navigate through math problems easily and was an “A” student. If I answered incorrectly, seeing how she arrived at the correct answer made all the difference in the world. Math became a puzzle to solve and was very exciting from that point on. At University, I fell in love with calculus and found the challenge exciting.

It’s the quality of maths/science/educationists/ scholar’s people they always talk in a slow pace so you can fully understand what they are saying. One of the fundamental quality of a teacher.

That reminds me of my 6th grade Math teacher, Miss Martin. She must have hated math, and she tried to make the students hate math too, with endless and useless repetition. Fortunately, she couldn’t break me, and I ended up an Engineer. ;>D

Outside of the basics, I can’t math my way out of a wet paper bag, but I can geometry anything and everything around me (even people). I think it’s just the fact that a shape is easier for me to grasp rather than going through equations. Shapes are concrete, physical; I can see and touch the shape. Equations are numbers and letters that could be anything and are written on paper which holds no weight for me to grasp

That ‘closest to’ example was incredibly difficult for 4th graders, especially without a calculator. Are you teaching long repeating decimal division to mid-elementary at all the schools this lady is visiting?

I applaud Ms. Sharma’s approach. Nothing can vanquish a child’s enthusiasm for any subject, when most of the teaching of that subject involves rote memorization. The sooner we move away from that approach and more towards the approach that Ms. Sharma is advocating, the better it will be for our kids, and the better it will be for our nation’s global competitiveness.

It’s common for relationships to encounter obstacles, but there is always a solution. My own marriage faced considerable issues, but with appropriate guidance, my husband and I worked through them and deepened our connection. Solutions are achievable if you’re ready to work together. Stay hopeful-there’s always a way forward.

Amen. We need to get to the point where “I can’t do math” is looked up with the same stigma as “I never learned to read”.
Also, besides games, there are lot of art projects you can with children that are really math lessons in disguise.

In KAZAKHSTAN, we have NOT problems with math, because children are forced to do it by their parents, and that’s why RUSSIAN and Kazakh method of knowledge is acknowledged by lots of countries, Without such STRANGE methods, like these ????????????????
@wg3951
January 1, 2025 at 10:27 pm
The problem with such brute force is that children will not necessarily incline towards math if they are given the choice
@АлдиярЕлдосұлы
January 2, 2025 at 9:39 am
@wg3951 we choose our choice after 11 grade, till this period , we INCLINE to every single subject, and I think it is not harmful and it doesn’t provoke any problem ????

In the intro (1:35) she claims to have ‘observed millions of students complete billions of math problems’. How is this possible!? Lets be generous and assume the number is 2 billion. Over 12 years that would require her to be ‘observing’ 5.28 problems per second continuously – without sleep! For 12 years! I question her authenticity.

I graduated high school (1999) and I couldn’t even do algebra (I did take it, but do to being in the group homes and foster care system I was set back at each new home) and I completed business calculus in college. After like 15yrs removed from HS.
I believe I always have the potential to do math, my dad was an accountant, mom was HS drop out (still until this day).

A lot of education boils down to early childhood development through the parents. If parents don’t take an interest in their child’s educational development then most times the kids fall behind and never catch up…

As a person who find math easy and now a parents myself to a kid who naturally love math, math is not a memorized problem. If you are, it is like cheating your way through school. Once the memory lost, math education is gone.
Based on my growing up, it was my dad. When I was a kid, my dad said “Math is easy” so I have never fear it. These days class have 25 students, many teacher cannot give a child a customized learning. Start at home.
@Sunny58942
December 29, 2024 at 6:34 pm
These are some good points. I remember during school when it came to basic math we would be using blocks and games to help learn in the classroom. Also, i think overall the understanding of the basis of math is hard for many people in the US to understand.
@MyTubeRodrigoSantos
December 29, 2024 at 10:18 pm
New generations dont want to understand anything, they just ask google about it and go forward to post it at X or tiktok.
When you really understand math you can realize that it is the foundation of any science, physics, chemistry, mechanics, you name it, all use math as foundation.
It is so simple that people try to complicate it just to make it seem respectful, because some people believe as a pre concept that if some theory is not complicated, by being too simple (not simplistic) it is because either it is not true pr has no value.
The power of calculating the change at a market place gives people the independence they need to thrive in finance, have you imagined that already??
Thee is no such thing as a math person or a reading person, as much as there is no black, yellow, white or green person to me. We are all people regardless, and we all can do math, being of any color, race or pickup mother… ish. Heheheh
