This assumes that depicting realism, and observational skills is the basis for complexity. Fair enough, but i would like to see other artists’ take on this. Especially those with different views compared to the current vid

Anything taught in the various art classes I had were techniques I already learned on my own through patience and countless hours of practice. What I appreciated was that those techniques were given an actual definition and straightforward guidelines to achieve a goal in a drawing without blindly redrawing and getting the result i was basically aiming for blindly. Anything I’ve drawn that I was proud of took me HOURS of mistakes until I ended up with something I felt was a miracle/happy accident that would be difficult to recreate because I had no idea how I actually did it

I actually had TM my freshman year of college! He always had such a thoughtful and empathetic approach to teaching. He encouraged us to look into the beauty of things, there was no question that he had a deep and loving outlook on art. 6 hours with him always flew by, and we left class feeling refreshed. TM was easily one of my favorite professors during school, hands down. He is so important, protect him at ALL COSTS~~

    September 3, 2020 at 6:27 pm

I’m on level 10ish. Although I need to spread out towards more media. Ironically things are never finished without color technically because we arent black and white life always has color.

    September 3, 2020 at 6:34 pm

I love the video, it gave a lot of insight and thoughts on the improvement of my skills! I was just wondering how long the oil painting version in the end of the video took roughly? Cause I understand there is a lot of stages and I feel I always try to get to the endpoint too fast without understanding the functions of the middle phases and maybe hearing the timings would help that.

Is really interesting to see how an artist see himself, in all his sketches he draws a really masculine jaw line, really strong chin and jaw, he is a really good looking man but I don’t see his jaw as strong as he draws it. Maybe that’s why I’m so scare to do a self portrait 😅

i literally paid to learn this information and it’s being given for free!! this guy seriously knows what he’s talking about! such a helpful video especially for artists attempting to get better at drawing the head. He mentions such an important part of art and that is how the levels of complexity, aka how to piece of art becomes more realistic is very reliant on how well you are able to observe and recognize the subject.

  208. Kade Bah

    September 10, 2020 at 11:34 pm

Even though I knew what level 11 would look like, after level 4, each subsequent step was like a punch in the gut. Like, every level was good, BUT THEN IT KEPT GETTING BETTER

  209. Threefive Nine

    September 10, 2020 at 11:56 pm

It’s interesting to see someone very experienced in portraiture still making adjustments to make a subject more conventionally attractive. He loses a bit of likeness by bringing the cheekbones higher, the eyebrows closer together, and making the soft curve of his jaw more angular. The eyebrows are the biggest element that I think would make a world of difference.

  210. Mira

    September 11, 2020 at 12:18 am

I took a figure painting class before transferring to my current art school and the levels of anatomical study must be stronger in figure drawing. I wish I had time with my degree to do some figure drawing but sadly my electives are done. I am a solid level 5 with my realism and I’ve been an artist for 10 years.

  231. Derek McGowan

    September 11, 2020 at 9:51 pm

Soo… First, he probably shouldn’t use the phrase “we are all…” when describing caucasian skin tones
But second, i would have thought the final level of a portrait would definitely include elements of the sitters individualism.. Such as their natural expression or props

Hmm, he drew himself much more angular in jawline/bone structure than it actually appears at all levels with exception of, of course..1&2. He is much rounder in face. Is this because he was drawing less in resemblance to him for sake of going right over the basic face lines of proportion or because he actually sees himself that way? 😅

this immediately reminded of me and couple other “cool guys” only drawing pictures of our Art teacher every time he gave us a free period to do what we wanted. I remember being surprised that he let us do this EVERY SINGLE TIME. later I realized that we learned SO MUCH because we had to keep coming up with new versions of it to make each other laugh

I can’t watch this video even though I am really interested.
The cuts every second make me crazy. Why do you cut the video in the middle of a sentence, in the middle of a thought? And zoom in a little more each time? Is it to grab attention? Well it makes it harder to follow for me.
