You know the old rule that you need to drink eight glasses of water every day? It’s simply a myth, says Dr. Jen Gunter. In this episode, she explains the amazing way your kidneys keep your system in balance — and how you can really tell if you’re dehydrated.

Think you know how your body works? Think again! Dr. Jen Gunter is here to shake up everything you thought you knew — from how much water you need to drink to how often you need to poop and everything in between. This TED original series will tell you the truth about what’s *really* going on inside you. (Made possible with the support of Oura)

You know that whole thing about drinking
eight glasses of water a day?

Sorry to have to tell you this,
but it’s a myth.

It won’t make your skin brighter,

it won’t make you feel clearheaded,

it won’t make you feel more energetic.

It might, however,
make you have to pee a lot.

Many people don’t understand
the biology behind their bodies.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there.

But the truth is that when you understand
how your systems function,

you’re able to make better decisions.

You’re not as prone
to fall for hype or pseudoscience.

You’ll feel empowered to understand
what’s really going on.

One myth that really bugs me

is the idea that you need
eight glasses of water a day.

Honestly, it’s pretty shocking
how ingrained it is.

You hear it on TV, you see it in articles.

But like I said, it’s nonsense.

For the most part,

your body will tell you
when you need to drink water,

because you’ve got these wonderful,
amazing, undervalued things —

kidneys.

Kidneys are the bean-shaped organs
located to either side of your spine,

right below your ribs.

They’re often thought of as a filter
or a waste-removal system,

but that doesn’t do the kidneys justice.

Your body is an environment
where everything, fluid and chemicals,

needs to be in a delicate balance.

The kidneys do a lot of the heavy lifting
when it comes to this balance.

Every day, blood in your body
passes through the kidneys.

What you eat, drink,
the temperature around you,

how much you exercise —

all of this affects
what’s going on with your body.

Your kidneys, along with
your nervous system and various hormones,

are constantly watching many gauges

and making adjustments about fluid, salt
and levels of other substances

in real time.

They do this with about one million
tiny structures called nephrons.

These nephrons are kind of like
workers on a conveyor belt,

actively adding things
and taking things away,

things like sodium, glucose or sugar,
calcium, amino acids and water,

to make sure the body
maintains homeostasis, or balance.

If levels of anything
get too high or too low,

then that can be harmful.

And it is the job of the kidneys

to keep the levels of many of these
substances in the just-right zone.

Substances that aren’t needed
leave the kidney

and head to the bladder,

where you excrete them
in the form of urine.

So where do eight glasses
of water a day fit in?

They don’t.

Noticed that I did not say

that the kidney function
is improved with excess water.

Imagine that you’re sweating a lot,

so you’re losing water from your blood.

The kidneys know your blood volume
is dropping ever so slightly

and that your blood is getting
ever so slightly saltier.

They compensate by absorbing
more water back into the blood,

making the urine more concentrated.

If the kidneys sense enough fluid
can’t be reabsorbed from the urine,

you’re signaled to drink,
meaning you get thirsty.

If you don’t have fluid available,

the thirst message
gets stronger and stronger.

A person facing real dehydration
won’t be unsure if they need water.

They’ll do whatever they need to get it.

It’s one of our most basic instincts

that’s evolved over a very long time,

in environments where clean water

wasn’t nearly as readily
available as it is today.

So thanks to your kidneys,

your body is really good
at maintaining hydration.

But if you stop counting
eight glasses of water a day,

how much should you be drinking?

The answer is simple:

there is no should.

When you feel thirsty, drink some water.

You can trust your body.

Unless you have kidney stones
or are elderly —

sometimes, our messaging systems
get a little worn with age —

or your doctor has told you otherwise,

constantly monitoring
how much water you drink

is not really necessary.

Here’s a point that’s often missed:

every single thing you consume
contains water.

Your morning coffee has water,
so does your breakfast.

And that snack — an apple, an orange,
a glass of juice, a granola bar —

just like you, they’re made of water too.

So as long as you’re listening
to your body’s internal sense of thirst,

there’s really no need
to be counting those eight glasses.

Wow! Surprised at the many negative reactions this video got. Everyone seems to know better…
Dr. Gunter clearly states that if you have a medical condition or if you’re elderly these general rules don’t necessarily apply.
My mother is elderly and thinks that if it gets warm she needs to drink more. She hardly does any strenuous activity and as a result she doesn’t sweat excessively. If she were to increase her fluid intake to anywhere near the ‘recommended’ 8 glasses a day she would likely die. She has heart failure, her heart cannot cope with this increased fluid intake, her legs start to swell and the skin breaks leading to increased risk of infection. The increased strain on her heart can also lead to an acute cardiac episode.
So if you’re not elderly or under medical supervision use your common sense! Running a marathon in 40 degree Celsius heat, yes, replace what you sweat. And don’t forget you also lose salts and sugars that you need to replace that are not present in ordinary drinking water.
But apart from that, yes, trust your body, you really aren’t going to die if you don’t drink 8 glasses of water a day. I am not aware of excessive mortality rates due to dehydration before everyone started carrying bottles of water with them all the time. Think for yourselves people, it’s not rocket science!

your mom is a completely separate case. yes, some people cant handle 8 glasses. but young healthy people benefit from it for sure. everything this doctor said is right. the problem is that people dont listen to their bodies enough. if we all carried a nice cold gallon with us at all times most of us would drink it all in a day. if i carry it i drink one and a half. but when i dont carry it i ignore my body. i dont drink enough. no, it wont kill me. but it is better to drink when you feel a little thirsty. if you are slightly dehydrated many bad things happen. 8 glasses a day is a safe number that makes sure you drink enough and stop ignoring your body. i glasses is good for you and this doctor is one of many spreading twisted info. she is right, if you listen to your body you are fine. most people get distracted and ignore it though

its when a start to have a headache and eye fatigue that i know that i am dehydrated.

Sadly, its take a whole hour after drinking for the headache to leave.
getting into the habit of taking a sip every hour is clearly a good thing…

As we get older, we are less thirsty and more prone to dehydration, so we need to keep a certain amount of water in mind.

  9. Realistic Thinking

    June 10, 2021 at 12:17 am

still, 8 glasses is a good place to start. it is not simply a myth. a recommendation isn’t a myth and no one said you need to do this. concentrated urine shows that your body would like more water instead of having to re absorb it. just drinking enough is good. 8 glasses is good. people can go hours at a time thirsty because they are focused on life. if you had half a gallon of water with you at all times it would be gone in like 8 hours because you get thirsty and drink it. half a gallon is 8 cups. when we drink as much as our bodies tell us to it is more than 8 cups. so when you drink less you are ignoring your body. stop twisting stuff for views and attention.

Before an 8 mile bicycle ride I would go on regularly , I figured out how much water to drink before the trip so I would not need to stop to pee or run out of water I carried with me. Also an even slightly dehydrated student is not a very good student that day. One more thing, my father had type 2 diabetes, I witnessed first hand how that disease effects your thirst for water and ability to gauge hydration.

She has made the point, btw. “So as long as you’re listening to your body’s internal sense of thirst……” –> This is something that I think a problem for many people nowadays. The lower “sensitivity” of our own body, especially when we get so busy with work we forget to hydrate ourselves. Many of my friends are already habituated for not feeling thirsty after eating they don’t feel it’s necessary to hydrate themselves with at least pure water (not water from the food they take). Then they develop these kidney stones or some even had kidney failure. The doctor kept saying “Your kidney has worked too hard. You might have not hydrate yourself enough regularly and that might be the cause of it.”

The whole point in telling people that your body is telling you you’re dehydrated, is because YOU ARE. Not that you are hydrated, but that you’ve let it go too far. So you should be drinking at regular intervals and NOT feeling this, you’d be efficiently hydrated. Having that feeling, is just a fail-safe our system has, before you, ya know, DIE. Well, complications you can’t fix fast enough, unless at a hospital.

this is a dangerous video, especially for the vast majority of usa people it seems like. as far as what i learned and my research went having thirst is already a little late and a signal of dehydration. also the fact that she even mentions that toxins and unneeded things are excreted with pee, just judging by how much toxins people consume nowadays, it seems rather a good idea to get rid of them drinking. the fact that she’s showing pancake with sugar syrup as ‘breakfast’ proves the point.

but yes, if you’re neurotic about drinking, slow down. it’s not that you’re gonna die if you have ready access to water like most people priviliged enough to watch this video.

I need between 2.2-6 liters of water a day, which is more than 8 glasses, so I certainly fall into the 8 glasses *plus* a day category. You’ll drink when you’re thirsty *if* you have water available. I always keep a full mug of 20oz water on my desk, and I reach for it subconsciously. Always keep water available and you’ll probably develop a better connection to your thirst gauge!

YouTube comments (as usual) missing the point, giving random personal anecdotes. The point of the video is that 8 glasses a day is not a hard rule and is somewhat arbitrary, and that you can maintain healthy hydration without succumbing to overly generalized pseudoscience statement (given that excess hydration doesn’t scale in terms of health benefits). Understand your body has its own tools it uses, and by understanding that you can assist it to make sure everything is gucci.

you actually make it harder to get rid of UTIs if you don’t drink enough fluid, because the bacteria doesn’t get flushed out of you urinary system, which makes it easier for the amount of said bacteria to increase and also for them to make their way from your blatter to you kidneys which could cause pyelonephritis …. but sure, your body can survive without 8 glasses of water a day. Doesn’t mean it’s a good idea not to drink plenty of fluid.

This video only works if you have perfect health and no neurodiversities. Not all of us feel thirsty or recognize the sensation. I also have POTS and we need hella water and electrolytes to keep our blood volume up. This video isn’t it…

So my skin looks better when I drink more water and yes, the first two weeks you need to go to the toilet more often but after two weeks you don’t need because the body is adjusting.

Every process in the body that was working slow or in minimum mode because of lack of liquide can do it’s job properly with the optimum amount of water (e.g. Repairing processes in body cells).
Of course you get liquide from fresh foods, and it’s necessary because of other healthy minerals the body needs, but this process of digestion will need also an amount of energy and liquid. Drinking is a good way to give the body a “fast shot” of liquid.

Ok may be we don’t need to consciously pay attention to drinking water, but this video makes no effort to emphasise importance of hydration. People might make no deliberate efforts to make sure they are hydrated after watching this water and believe me many don’t.

Biggest bullshit I watched today. Thirst = already dehydration happening.. equals headache and other unpleasant stuff. No thank you, I rather stay hydrated. I’ll rather take care of my body before it needs to send me signals for help.

For years, I’ve been feeling dizzy almost all Monday mornings, just after getting out of bed. I would usually have to lie down again in order not to faint, and it sometimes made me miss the first hour of university or work. It was only after a holiday to Mexico that I suddenly realized that my Monday-morning-dizziness felt similar to the dehydration I had experienced on my holiday. The cause? Because my weekend days were unstructured, I didn’t drink enough on Saturdays and Sundays. And no, I never felt thirsty.

Your urine color tell you the state of your water level.
In my case, i oftenly dont feel thirsty, but but my urine said that i need more water.
So, yes, i force myself to drink..

Next time you think socialism works, consider that in the holo domor, children were attacking their siblings to drink their blood out of thirst. Communism can easily be voted in, but it can never be voted out.

Even though this is backed by actual peer reviewed research in scientific journals, they won’t listen to you Doctor because the Google doctor already ingrained this in them. You need to drink fluid. It doesn’t really matter what it is. We have to learn how to do things in moderation.

This is a video with information aimed for people that put their health above work, status quo and other things (as we all sould). Unfortunately, it fails to consider other cultures outside the US. From where I’m from, (Mexico) people still NEED to be told by a professional to drink water regularly, because most people in our country is overworked and/or preoccupied on how to survive day by day. It is NOT in our culture to put health first. There are communities where literally there is NO drinking or bottled water available, but Coca-Cola is. And ultimately, if people are thirsty they’re most likely to drink that. As physicians (I’m an occupational health physician) part of our job is to educate them simply on why it is necessary to drink water instead of Coca-Cola. To be clear, I agree completely with the content of this video, but I disagree in that pleople will hydrate themselves with water just by “feeling thirsty” and it is important to spread the word about that too.

What is this sense of “thirst” I keep hearing about? I usually need headaches or dark urine to remind me I need water.
