@khalifahmuhammad1574 not sure who you’re referring to or why a Brown university professor would have any relation to fusion. Fusion reactor experiments are currently going on in numerous countries with billions in funding and are very close to viability ironically through the use of AI itself.
@Music-vr7sz

no need for that. in finland we have a lot of energy and wärtsilä can make big motors for generators

Maybe in Finland but not another parts of the world. Every place has different climates cultures conditions you can’t equate what happens in Finland what happens let’s say in Syria or Egypt or Argentina they’re all different places with different climates and environments energy production etc etc

@bossadave
December 28, 2025 at 2:13 pm
@TheDrov how many technicians are availiable to work on a jet engine rather than the default Cummins or Caterpillar genset. It is the same as trying to find a mechanic to work on a Ford compared to a Pagani Zonda. The risk of failure or downtime is huge.
@TheDrov
December 28, 2025 at 2:17 pm
@bossadave Same as having top tier network architects or distinguished engineers who fix a network outage at a T1 telecom carrier. There are a lot of things that require extreme expertise potentially 24 hours a day. I work in telecom infrastructure/ networks. Most changes occur in the off hours and go without those experts but things go wrong and some have a high risk and require them.

If these engines can be “detuned” to operate with minimal wear, that could be great. I imagine ample lubricating oil and filters, constant loads, no bird strikes… Just change a few filters and add new oil while draining the old,
They use other common jet engines for power, but anything that lowers maintenance is great.

Trains, merchant ships and plane should generate electricity and collect it for electricity grid. A genuine electric Grid should integrate public transport for electricity generation as well as using electricity. Ships and plane move luggage and container why don’t they do the same with electric cells for electric Grid distribution on and off plane and ship when there collecting containers and suitcases. It could be done at the same time in the same time frame. Trains could produce radiculas amount of electricity. Even bus and truck could produce electricity by adding extra wheels to produce more energy and. There’s a lot of wasted energy potential with vechles especially trains, planes and merchant ships.

December 29, 2025 at 10:03 am
For once it’s actually not a bad idea
– they have to run these engines on the ground for testing anyways, and this gives them a lot of paid test time (AI companies paying for the fuel to run Boom’s engine), and they can afford to test even more than normal engines on the ground, improving safety
– they get some small profit (or at least reduced costs of testing) and can cover the test of R&D
this means the company might actually survive until entry of service of their plane!
@petewright4640
December 29, 2025 at 10:14 am
Solid oxide fuel cells SOFC, as licensed by Ceres Power, are the way to go. Silent, low pollution, fuel flexible (yes they can use methane or H2) and much more fuel efficient than a gas turbine (jet engine). And waste heat can be used for data center cooling, which is a bit tricky to collect if using a turbine!
@petewright4640
December 29, 2025 at 10:25 am
“A lot of the fears about climate change have not come to pass” !
Climate change is steadily ramping up. It’s too late to wait for severe impacts to become clear and then try to stop using fossil fuels as it takes decades to transition to net zero. Also there is a delay for some of its main effects to develop e.g. sea level rise, which will continue rising for centuries after we stop using fossil fuels. Not sure developing supersonic travel is helpful either as it’s very energy intensive.
@635574
December 29, 2025 at 11:58 am
Not comparing it to a gas power plant yet? I guess it has some power but not the efficiency.
@ldl1477
December 29, 2025 at 2:42 pm
So an interim measure, burning abundant & cheap natural gas, until we get scalable fission and/or the silver bullet fusion power? Yeah, ok. I’m not sure why we would care about the turbines being “Jet” turbines, thought… unless hype? But, hype factor makes me take things less seriously (unless its a consumable for short time horizon individuals).
