Why MagSafe on MacBooks should stay dead
USB-C is more universally useful than Apple’s klutz-proof power cable. Dan Ackerman explains why.

Every macbook can be charged from any of the 4 ports. If they do magsafe will be implemented on one of the 4. The rest will stay usbc. Or maybe they make it back compatible with usbc. Who knows.

I disagree with you. Magsafe should cone back.
Mike Carl
January 23, 2021 at 11:49 am
Your reasoning is quite shallow. The rumor that they are going to put back the magsafe DOES NOT mean that they will remove all the usb C on the macbooks. It simply meant that there will be a first party option. What’s the problem of having 1 more way of charging the macs? You can still use usb C to charge it. That capability cannot be remove to usb c because that is a standard of the usb c. I hate that you kinda do a somewhat clickbaity video here. Totally unjustifiable. Sorry.

I clicked this video prepared to say “nah shaddap you’re wrong, bring back magsafe blah blah”
But I actually agree with you regarding the ‘availability”of replacements and other cables.
Easy solution would be to have both.

Apple usually has very long term goals. iPhone, apple watch, now both have a mag safe like charger. I’d venture to say they are probably working on this for the iPad too.
Perhaps, their long term vision is one charger that works across all their devices. Since iphone is moving to a port less design and apple watch is already there, mag safe is the way.
Not to mention, physical connections wear over time. I have replaced countless lightening cables, and a few USB-C. I find that USB-C also has poor durability, likely due to the far less snug fit we enjoy from regular usb.
In the end I think this will be great for apple users and great for the environment.

You would rather trade in the [by your own admission] laptop-saving MagSafe based on your speculation that people will be better off because they don’t want another proprietary cable in or on their desks? Okay then….

i can’t decide if i agree to this video until apple releases the macbook, not just the rumours. i like usb-c though, but yeah. i still can’t decide. I’m gonna go back to this video when i can and press dislike or like.

wouldn’t it be great if we had universal plugs that remain standard for many decades like the power outlets in our homes that can power anything? Maybe the USB folks can come out with USB D with built in mag safe or everything can just be qi wireless charged, just a higher power version for laptops that would be great.

apple should just include a mag safe adapter in the box.

January 23, 2021 at 4:04 pm
The point of USB-C is that it’s able to be used with multiple devices, like your phone, headphones, laptop, tablet and other things like a Switch. Not laptops exclusively.
Marc Asturias
January 23, 2021 at 4:45 pm
Dan, you really have missed the mark on your comments here about Magsafe. While it may be convenient to have USB-C for interoperability, using another brand’s adapter is a terrible idea…wattage, warranty coverage, etc. Magsafe is great for saving your investment from that inadvertent trip on the cord, but if it does have an Achilles heel, it is simply that metallic particles can be attracted to it, so its key to always keep it clean…that’s it. Its brilliant.

Pretty sure you’ll still be able to charge the new MacBook with a USB-c charger even though it will have a magsafe power delivery system

January 23, 2021 at 7:53 pm
MagSafe is there to free up one extreme powerful USB 4/thunderbolt port. You have to use one of them for charging at a desk, it is like using airplane to delivery your grocery. Wasted potential.

The Surface can charge with both the proprietary magnetic connection and USB-C. The Macs would probably be similar as USB-C can supply enough power to charge the battery.

4 mins of a personal opinion with not many facts. MagSafe was a revolutionary power connection method that did what it was designed to do. It also self latched. No fiddling around with a small USB-C connector that is often hard to disconnect due to the smooth plastic covering on the end.

Almost certainly gonna be akin to the magsafe on the new iPhones. It’s not a port, just a wireless charger that holds on via magnets. It’ll be in addition to USB-C charging.

Love it or hate it. MagSafe is more of a personal preference. It’s a trade off. Convenience of one charger, or the insurance/safety of MagSafe.
The day you trip on your cable and destroy your laptop is the same day you can also say, “well, at least I didn’t have to pack my charger today”.

don’t know why apple jsut doesn’t make it’s own usb-c magsafe dongle thingy.. oh they could also put a chip in it that pairs with the laptop so you have to get a compatible charger.. or better yet the whole motherboard replaced if you have a problem. HIRE ME APPLE!

The thing you’re saying is mostly just a preference for you, since it’s apple, USBC will probably stay on their laptops. I’m exited for MagSafe to return, but I’m not scared of USBC being removed.

magsafe and lightning cable is designed just for apple products, so if apple really want to save environment like what they said when they introduce iphone 12 they should use usb-c as world standard, so every charger can charged all devices not just their own products

I hated magsafe. They were unreliable connections that caused a great deal of resistance and heat once it wore out. One of them destroyed a circuit board that had to be replaced by apple under warranty.
The chargers had inadequate strain relief on the wires by the magsafe connector, such that within a year or two the insulation would crack and expose the wires inside. I had to get countless chargers replaced under warranty. There were even class action lawsuits about the terrible quality of these chargers.

USB-C is not going anywhere on MacBooks. His other problem about everything being powered by USB-C and MagSafe would ruin that is only a problem that reviewers will have because the average person does not have that many laptops just lying around. If MagSafe came back then it would only affect someone who is keeping old laptop as a backup, even then it will still not be a problem because old charging chord and brick will be with the old laptop.

If what some people are commenting here is true, then Apple is going to be producing a MagSafe USB-C connector which would be bringing MagSafe technology to all current non-Mac laptops too – does anyone believe Apple would actually do that though?
