what they are giving devs will not be the consumer product. the end goal is XR capable glasses. this is a dev tool so there are a ton of apps on launch in a couple years

Apple is the trend-setter of tech, the quality of the hardware should make even the 1st gen of their vr still something to impress and achieve a leap forward in this industry. Awaiting to see what happens no matter how those feel about vr. Have gotten my sea legs for it myself with my own headset, the ill effects do go away and it’s an amazing thing to witness when done right 🥽

Having a solution to a problem always sells!
Imagine being able to vacuum while watching YouTube with your VR
Having your own room in VR, where your things are in this room, things are music you have bought, movies you have purchased, books you have bought, your documents saved in iCloud, everything you have that you have bought from Apple is in this room!
$3000 no problem! Or it will be $99 for 36 months! i don’t care! I buy!

Apple can only make Pro-sumer products. Apple left the business sector a long time ago when they quietly ended their Mac Server OS. Apple AR/VR headset like all Apple products will be tightly bound to the Apple Ecosystem.

AR/VR has problems staying relevant right now. The big push for VR by companies like Meta and others seems to be out of desperation. IMO Many investors bet several years ago that VR/AR driven Metaverse (a semi cringe category they gave AR/VR apps and games) to be the new “Internet”. As vocal as the internet is about VR, only wallets matters. So what is for Apple to gain by releasing an AR/VR headset? The market is limited, they would further limit themselves with Apple Ecosystem. It’s like throwing money into a burning pit.

They could announce compatibility of new MacOS and an already available headset. This to me is the most plausible as the Risk is all on the other company, and it would just be software which is right up WWDC alley.

Did you guys forget about the Developer Transition Kits? Both were done at WWDC. Essentially the world was introduced to M1 (for the latest kit anyway) and devs were given a working platform (a repurposed Mac Mini). This wasn’t a version one or a consumer product. So. Could be the same deal. We also see this happen in video games with consoles.. though with much secrecy.. for reasons..

For $3,000 I would need to be sold on controllers and headset both being fantastic upgrades / differentiators over what Meta Quest, PCVR and PSVR2 currently offer.

Having try Quest 2 and just bought PSVR 2
Apple must have at launch will be
    1. fully running MAC OS on it
    2. Apple Fitness workouts for it
    3. Apple Music concerts for it
    4. Apple TV plus/sports content for
    5. Gaming for it is obvious but it needs to be serious about it, buy gaming studios to make exclusive games for it

The software updates apple is making this year are not going to be huge, it’s one of those incremental years where they focus on performance and stability. It should leave them with a big chunk of showtime to talk about their headset. I just hope we get to see another “one more thing…” at the end of the software part of the event.

I have heard that when the internet is done the next thing taking over will be the metaverse Apparently it’s a virtual reality thing with all the things the internet can do right now. Apple obviously know this, and are developing tech in anticipation I think this metaverse thing is still a way off, and maybe Apple have jumped the gun with this. Only time will tell, but if there’s a company big enough and powerful enough to kick start this next big thing, then surely it must be Apple!

I believe Apple has pushed their “we come a few years after everyone but make it better” strategy a bit too far. Every other company has already tried this before, it didn’t work (I mean, there are products, but they are not a must), and it is not a new concept, as VR headsets already existed in the 1980’s… Even Meta, that tried to push the “Metaverse” concept very hard, is moving on to conversational AI, which is the new thing everyone want to jump to right now.

I think if Apple can make a headset that has at least 150° FOV as my old oculus quest 2’s field of vision was terrible, the graphics also need to improve by a huge margin to what they are today

I own the Vive XR Elite got it day one and the setup took sometime but the hand tracking is another level all together vs Meta Quest 2 the only other headset I own that has hand tracking. I also own HTC Vive Pro 2 and HP Reverb G2. I think what Apple going to do is similar to Meta and HTC with video passthrough vs magic leap optic stuff. The reason the technology is no where near ready as seen by magic leap issues with object transparency and difficulty with light levels and cost. Meta Quest Pro uses local dimming vs OLED and is able to compensate somewhat for lack of no OLED. Vive XR Elite still uses LED and is somewhat effected by lack of true black but it’s video passthrough and hand tracking is completely at another level. I think Apple looking to bring to market a lower cost XR headset using technology brought over by Sony and their PSVR 2 headset. It has OLED and has amazing head tracking as well as higher resolution micro OLED then the LED inside of ether Meta Quest Pro and HTC Vive XR Elite. If they combine their technology with AR and camara technology with Sony micro-OLED displays from PSVR 2 at a 1000 to 1500 dollar price point with some form of iPhone integration it will be a pretty big deal especially with rumors of them working with Steam for gaming. I have a feeling these are the reasons why steam has not introduced a replacement yet for Steam Valve Index because they are waiting for Sony or LG to ramp up production of their OLED.

I have huge doubts, after spending some time with the so called best VR Headset for the moment, the PSVR2, I still think it is way to far out for this product category to be prime time ready. People still get vertigo and all kinds of things from VR. Even if chips like m2 get faster and faster, 2x 4K @120 fps screens for VR are still impossible to delivery to. Additionally they really would need a killer app, and so many people already tried and failed to deliver that, including FB, HTC etc.

    1) You are the most beautiful woman to have ever existed. It’s a fact. ❤
    2) I wrote a book where Augmented Reality Glasses were a thing at the end of 2020. So, kind of late so far.
    3) I then theorized that when Apple came into the space you would then see mass adaption of Augmented Reality technology.

In general, I have no specifics, all I know is that Apple is a techno-cult, and people will buy it either way.

  49. J DARG

Apples headset will be a failure compared to Sony’s New Headset and Apple has no games and that’s why people buy headsets not to use your computer in VR the Meta Quest Pro was made for that and look how that is doing because it’s not doing well and what apple is doing has already been done as I can speak to people in vr and I have been able to do that for the last 4 years in rec room

  52. Eliot Hochberg

    March 25, 2023 at 9:54 pm

It would make sense that this would be a developer project and product, but if you look at phones and how they sell, I don’t think it’s fair to suggest that it wouldn’t keep being an expensive product. We have phones that are still over $1000 And people will buy a new one. Some of them will buy them every year. $3000 is probably too high for most functions, however, Apple is in the high-end product market, and VR headsets are really only for wealthy people at this point. After all, to do anything other than sit on a couch, you need, at least 6 ft.² in order to do anything of any value, and more like 36 ft.² if you really want to do some thing interesting. Just watching things is still far superior on a fixed television on your wall. Then it would be with a headset on your face.

The other problem as I see it that nobody has overcome is how stupid and vulnerable you are wearing the typical VR headset. Augmented reality is better, because at least you can see the world around you. But until somebody has what amounts to a set of glasses on your face that provides the full AR in VR experience, I don’t think you’re going to really make the penetration that something like the iPhone is made.

But additionally, and I have played some games, and then some other things, I have yet to see a compelling VR application that is better ultimately than what we already have. It’s the 3-D television thing all over again, unless somebody comes up with an application that is better.

The only place where I CVR really making a difference is in industrial and business settings, where you can Look at things that you otherwise would have to travel thousands of miles for, or spend thousands or tens of thousands of dollars to prototype. So industrial uses a VR seem pretty likely, and it may be that Apple may target those kinds of uses. After all, we’re not hearing that much about widespread use of VR in the most obvious market where it could be.

My opinion is that until there is some kind of virtual reality, system that taps into your experience in your head rather than just haptic feedback, VR is never going to meet the expectations that most of us have. And therefore it would always be somewhat niche. AR, on the other hand, I could see having a lot more applications for the every day person. Heads up, displays, enhanced reality, or the ability to visualize things in your home, or in your environment, creates a much more compelling general application. You’re not trying to create a fictionalized version of what you’re feeling, because you’re still seeing the world around you as it is. You’re just enhancing it or altering in someway. I think that augmented or enhanced reality is really going to be where it’s at with regards to anything that you wear on your face that will provide visuals directly to the eye.

However, as we saw with the release and death of Google glass, or at least apparent death of it, Having such glasses on while you’re wandering around the world, may not have the effect that a manufacturer might want. People like their privacy, and wearing a device that has a camera on it very obviously is not going to be comfortable for a lot of people. And that becomes worse when the camera is hidden.

So what this means is that walking down the street with a pair of AR glasses will only become something desirable, if society changes, or the advantages are so significant that it overcomes the drawbacks. On the other hand, wearing AR glasses in your own home, or you don’t need to set aside an entire room, just to have fun, could end up being something useful for both work, and play, as well as personal productivity, like visualizing, a redesign of a room, or doing virtual fashion shows, that sort of thing.
