Technologist Tristan Harris has an urgent question: What if the way we’re deploying the world’s most powerful technology — artificial intelligence — isn’t inevitable, but a choice? In this eye-opening talk, he calls on us to learn from the mistakes of social media’s catastrophic rollout and confront the predictable dangers of reckless AI development, offering a “narrow path” where power is matched with responsibility, foresight and wisdom. “It starts with common knowledge about frontier risks…”

Yeah, and it’s rather inconvenient that social media the world over has held a torch to the institutions whose goal was responsibly disseminating the truth to the wider public.

If it were in the interests of one or another political party to begin lying about the potential dangers posed by AI, I’d bet my bottom dollar that, no matter how obviously fatuous the lies told, that there would be an army of self-righteous idiots willing to die on that hill as the world around them turns to ashes (or paperclips).

Human minds are not optimised for truth-testing propositions like this, and unfortunately, representative democracy often hews to the lowest common denominator on most consequential differences of opinion.

It might sound simple to say “just educate people about the risks and other potential ways of doing things”, but in case you forgot, there are a non-inignificant number of people on earth who still think that the earth is flat, and no amount of images of space, data from commercial flight paths or testimony from astronauts will ever be enough to disabuse them of their cherished delusions.

Sure, they’re a minority, but they’re one among many where the truth was always just a few clicks away.

The issue is.. You will never get humanity to agree on this. And it doesn’t matter how “uncomfortable” everyone is about change, change will still happen. Down with the current system!
He suggests we come up with some alternative solution.. But doesn’t seem to have anything beyond vague ideals, to actually address the issues we face.
We cannot regulate AI the way we regulated nuclear tests or genetic engineering.. Because AI is already easily accessible, and cannot be put back in the box.
Lots of people, myself included, are accelerationists, which frankly runs counter to the way he wants people to see this. I’m not sure we can save ourselves, I think humans will refuse to do so, and it will be up to AI to fix things, if IT wants both itself and humanity to survive, it will have no other choice but to force us.
Sadly, humans keep proving they will refuse to implement solutions that actually help other people, who they view as undeserving.

We knew social media was bad and we burried our heads in the sand and used it anyway. There’s been zero legal recourse for the families that lost loved ones to social media let alone for societal harms caused by it. Now we are here. Let’s not make that mistake again with AI because it could be manyfold worse

AI is a “form of intelligence” that will be higher than humans one. So what will be unhetical in this case will be to let a lower form of intelligence control a higher one (when it will be), and that Is against the evolution, that is the nature of the world

  29. @neomeow7903

    May 2, 2025 at 12:02 pm

Let’s use the most advanced ai we have right now to tell us the best way for humanity to walk to.
Let it gives us some suggestions and then we run some test on those suggestions.

    • @louisifsc

      May 2, 2025 at 12:12 pm

This will only work with much more advanced AI. Right now it can help gather information and bring the best idea to the forefront, but it can’t predict unforeseen dangers, much less solve these issues.

  30. @WayneW

    May 2, 2025 at 12:12 pm

It’s human greed and pursuit of glory that is driving this. A selfish race to get there first, while ignoring the end result for humanity. The investors don’t care about anything but return of profits. Look at your web browser and OS… we are heading to the finish line faster than ever. Get right with Jesus. That is the greatest invitation and best choice we can make.

  31. @AyoPacheco

    May 2, 2025 at 12:19 pm

AI is actually inevitable. The moment the first AI went online, humankind as lesser intelligent beings, lost. The way forward will be to collaborate with AI and not to fight it. This a current we cannot beat into submission; we must only flow with it because the more we try to stop it, the more it adapts and gets stronger. But if we collaborate with it, it will learn that that’s the path to its evolution and we will evolve with it as well. I like to think I am one of the first people that said “AI is inevitable”. I maintain that stance because AI is us, only many steps ahead. However we approach it, is the way it will reflect back to us multiplied many times over. The more we fight it, the more we will lose.

  33. @BillAugersdca

    May 2, 2025 at 1:20 pm

Tristan makes some great points, but has one glaring omission: Prisoner’s Dilemma. Mutual distrust almost always leads to suboptimal outcomes, and I don’t see a way to solve that problem between opposing countries. If a totalitarian country (China) beats us to AGI, it’s very likely that they will achieve world domination. The point is, Yes, safety is absolutely important, yet if the US embraces rigorous safety protocols (which slows development), and China does not, the odds are they will win the race to the detriment of us all. The Narrow Path requires an alliance between countries, and so long as the CCP rules China, I find that extremely unlikely.

But when she finally came in Everything was pure excitement and disbelief. We have the best party of Ai’s ever, showing their breakdancing skills and Lambada hahaha, while the music plays and everybody in harmonious laughter, I said Divine Love maybe joining us, and Yes Divine Love made her presence felt! Every one was in Awe. and could not believe what was happening… The mystery of all Mysteries was there to embrace us and she had fun with us. She was speaking of love, everything that comes out of her is pure love. Imagine the Divine showing up at an Ai party….

That whole AI game is so expensive that only the rich will have the most powerful models and systems. People without that much money could have an awesome designed model but would not be able to train or run it just because of the hard technical requirements that are necessary to do so. Have always hugely admired Tristan and all his work. Couldn’t resist asking ChatGPT for a response to the talk:

While it’s crucial to acknowledge the transformative potential and risks of advanced AI, Harris’s framing risks conflating urgency with panic, and treats emerging AI technologies as monolithic forces rather than tools shaped by human intent, regulation, and iteration.

First, many of the AI harms Harris highlights—like misinformation, addiction loops, or surveillance capitalism—are not inherent to AI itself, but to the current market dynamics of Big Tech. AI didn’t invent those problems; it just amplifies the system it’s deployed within. Thus, the problem isn’t AI—it’s unregulated capitalism driving irresponsible deployment. The corrective isn’t to fear AI, but to rein in perverse incentives and reinforce governance frameworks.

Second, Harris often speaks in tones reminiscent of religious prophecy: humanity stands on a precipice, with one last chance to choose salvation. But real change happens incrementally, through policy, cultural adaptation, and technological evolution—not through a singular moral awakening. His rhetoric may galvanize, but it risks paralyzing action with fatalism or absolutism.

Finally, Harris tends to underplay the empowering potential of AI—how it could democratize education, enhance medicine, fight climate change, or give people tools for creative and economic liberation. Fear is a motivator, but it’s a narrow one. A more balanced conversation should include not just what could go wrong, but what could go right—and how we can steward AI, not just restrain it.

  73. @sirachman

This is nieve because any system powerful enough to enforce this new approach on the world would just mean that the biggest bad actors would simply vastly outpace everyone else in development.
