A robotic diving system that looks like a Transformer? OceanOneK can go to depths that would kill a human diver. It can also handle delicate objects without breaking them. Using a haptic system, humans can use OceanOneK as an avatar, allowing humans to dive in areas we never previously could. WIRED spoke with Professor Oussama Khatib to understand how he and his team designed, built and tested this robotic diver.

Super cool, but does seem like a big waste of money trying to fit the components into a human shape, though this probably helped them get more funding so idk.

i still dont get why we want to make robots look human rather than just build them so they’re efficient at the job
Tina Vo

I think its because the human body is really efficient with its anatomy, so to make a robot efficient for the use of helping humans- it makes sense to imitate the body of a human

With VR googles disabled people (Or those that can’t dive for other reasons) will be able to experience diving, while scientists and companies can dive with a humanoid in depths a human can’t dive. Great idea!
