In a blistering talk, Nobel Laureate Al Gore looks at the two main obstacles to climate solutions and gives his view of how we might actually solve the environmental crisis in time. You won’t want to miss his searing indictment of fossil fuel companies for walking back their climate commitments — and his call for a global rethink of the roles of polluting industries in politics and finance.
Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

Thanks Mr Gore! I talked to my brother in law the other day and he was convinced the petrol companies were going to solve the problem with co2 capturing and turning it into fuel. Refused the idea that it was wasting energy, like you said.
I hope many people will see this and start using their brain. I hope we’ll make it in time

Exactly!
I really get pissed off when I say that we should focus more on proven and already commercial scale green technology, and when I use nuclear as an example people be like:
NO, THAT’S TOO EXPENSIVE!
I mean, what? Are we seriously choosing to destroy the planet we live on than rather than pay the price to save it?
But I get that this kind of thinking comes from the misunderstanding so people have that “investments in nuclear take money away from renewables”.
It’s not true, we need both technologies because they complement one another. The money we should be putting into them both is the money that currently goes to fossil fuel subsidies. So there is no contradiction. China is a great example in this sense. It is the country who annually most expands its installed capacity in both nuclear AND renewables.
We don’t need to choose one over the other. We need BOTH!

A healthy economy can solve any problem. Shutting down energy production, shuts down the economy. Therefore, the solution is pushed further into the future. Climate change is caused by the energy from the sun. Life, food production, population survive because on CO2 in the ecosystem. Please wake up before it is too late.

this seems like a political speech, biased and driven by his own personal agenda. He is not talking science and leaves tons of facts behind. We can’t keep thinking the oil and gas industry are the evils if we consumers are demanding low prices of energy and of products. Change starts from the consumer. Change starts with laws and regulations to make it more evident for people how their consumption impacts the environment (think carbo tax). Also, what is the solution he is proposing? Nothing… he is just incentivizing a crowd to hate the oil industry, an industry that has delivered what has been asked for from consumers like you and me. He also talks down on carbon capture and sequestration, then what is his solution? Solar and wind…? really? with your own words “do you take us for fools?” Sadly, in this situation, probably yes. People will sadly believe your words.

I give money to politicians who fight for climate solutions, and to organizations that fight in court to protect and defend our natural resources and environment. I make personal sacrifices to do so, and am willing to endure the consequences of complete removal of fossil fuel usage immediately. NUCLEAR POWER today can provide a near ZERO-CARBON 100% solution to mankind’s energy needs, along with being the cleanest, safest, most energy dense, and most (TRUE COST) economical energy solution. DON’T tell me the fossil fuel industry ISN’T the problem when the ecosystem no longer supports human life in a way that we call living.

Yes, we need to reduce our emissions Al. But the thing that is going to wipe out humanity by 2045 is loss of our oxygen (no more plankton) and loss of our food (no more pollinators). Plankton produces over 70% of our daily oxygen and they should be booming (warmer seas, more CO2 as plant food). But our microplastic and toxic chemical pollution is wiping them out when it reaches the oceans. What’s more the industrial, chemical farming complex is wiping out our pollinators, who ultimately produce our food. We as consumers really also need to come to the table and stop supporting plastics and chemicals. And finally, China and India burn more than 70% of the world’s coal (current consumption around 8-bn tonnes), and this will rise to around 80% by 2050 (consumption around 5-bn tonnes) as other nations cut back faster. So once again, stop buying your cheap electronics from China and India, and offshoring your carbon emissions.

Here is the problem with any ICE engines no one gets. In the USA alone, 19 Trillion cubic meters a year of AIR is being consumed by personal internal combustion engines. That figure does not include industrial engines, ships, aircraft, motorcycles, lawnmowers etc. You could triple that to 60 trillion and then quadruple that for the rest of the world or 240 TRILLION m3!!!. Here is the math: Average engine size in Lt. times Avg. rpm / Stroke times runtime (min) = total volume burned per day (1 Car) X total volume burned per year (1 Car X 365) X total number of personal & Commercial Vehicles in the USA (278063737 = m3 Air Consumption in the US 3 X 2800 /4 X 90=189,000lt X 365 / 1000 = 68,985 m3 X 278,063,737 = 19,182,226,896,945 m3.
To put it into human perspective thats 18.3 million Empire State Buildings volume of air burned each year in the USA alone. We simply don’t have enough trees to replenish that consumption and NO variation of ICE will solve the problem. Electric and Solar are our only hope. Burning Air equates to 240 Trillion m3 reduced to 24 trillion m3 of fine cancer causing particulates (10:1 compression ratio)

Great talk Al Gore! I like the passion you have for calling out the oil companies and petro states for their greed. You inspire me to take action. I’m actually encouraged by how much I can personally do. I have the means to drive an EV and install solar panels and it feels great to not have to go to the gas station anymore. I working on replacing all my appliances with electric versions. My goal is to reduce my personal use of fossil fuels as much as possible. Of course, I want to stop polluting but it’s also simple economics. I mean, can someone tell me why I should pay some big corporation for my energy when I can get it much cheaper from the sky? I’m also reducing how much I fly and asking what is the cost of the pollution of my actions? Is there an alternative? Just asking these questions and taking what action I can is very empowering!

I hate to throw more gasoline on the fire as it were, but I now think about “overshoot”, not just CO2 and global warming. Dumping CO2 into the atmosphere is just one form of environmental overshoot. So is draining aquifers that took millions of years to fill. So is producing millions of tons of single-use plastic that does not biodegrade, and is now showing up as microplastics in our bodies and our food chain. So is damming and dredging rivers and paving over wetlands that used to absorb flooding. So is deforestation and mass extinctions.
Ending fossil fuel consumption is vital, but so is addressing all the other forms of overshoot we’re currently inflicting on our environment.

What keeps on being a mystery is the fact that politicians has suddenly become scientists. They are politicians and have the distinction of being able to tell half truths which is the same as a total lies. They sit with the country’s purse strings in their hands and fund research as they see fit and have the ability to drive issues to suit their agendas. That big business is in for profit is undeniable, that they have to clean up their act is also undeniable and that is true for many big corporations like the arms industry, pharma, and data but to name a few. Governments subsidies should also be much more transparent. To my mind this whole CO2 drama is not proven at all and the costs of the so-called green energy is not open and transparent. The worlds climate has always been subject to change and will always be so. Our influence is measurable and in many cases negative, especially to pollution and habitat destruction, which is something we can solve and do something about, but efforts is rather half hearted. Leave the science for scientists and allow open debate and start looking on the ground what is happening and get away from computer modeling on such a vast and complex issue as that modeling can never be even close to accurate. Thus far from the 1970s onward we had the world freezing and now boiling. Non of the “science” done then and definitely now has been proved. This very accurate measurements now from satellites is very new technology and jumping to conclusions with 30 year data on a process with many cycles up to millions of years makes no sense what so ever. The world has lost reason, reality, practicality and common sense in the people who somehow or other came into positions of power with not nearly enough checks and balances to get them to do what they are suposed to namely look out for the genuine wellbeing of people and the planet.

Oil royalty payments give the oil companies Carte Blanche to do whatever they want, for as long as they want, wherever those oil royalties are placed. If you are making money from oil royalties, you are part of the problem. Face reality. Wildlife and habitat are dying from the permission oil royalties provide. It’s about money, not life.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) models, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, while ambitious, still necessitates the use of natural gas. Often referred to as the ‘transition fuel’, natural gas provides a reliable and lower-emission energy source. As it stands, we will continue using fossil fuels until viable alternatives emerge. Thus, there’s an urgent need to increase investments in clean technologies. For this to happen, government subsidies are essential.
While it might seem paradoxical for governments to subsidize oil and gas production, this approach can help stabilize energy prices, benefiting consumers.
I’m a 17-year-old boy aspiring for a brighter future, and I’m eager to contribute to the advancement of these pivotal technologies.

Total government propagandist. His climate models have been wrong for decades. The terminology even changed from global warming to climate change. Even if the problem is forecasted correctly and with such dire consequences, the solutions come from free market innovation and not massive government spending. This has become a religion where we call on our masters to save us from an elusive problem where the goalposts always change but the calls for authoritarianism are constant. Furthermore, academia is a big part of the issue where research in to climate hysteria gets massive backing from government grants resulting in biased data and political agency. Finally, big oil is also a player in this racket where they engage in non competitive practices and have used government lobbying to freeze new energy infrastructure like nuclear. Corruption all the way down.

I would never say a word to defend the oil industry.
Quite the opposite.
But I always use the story of the scorpion to describe capitalism.
All companies should be EXPECTED to act in their interest. Which is to earn money for their shareholders.
It is up to US to regulate them.
Also, every transaction has two parties: a buyer and a seller.
WE are not blameless. Every single gallon of fuel used, has been purchased by individuals. Including me.
Are WE doing enough to eliminate fossil fuels from our lives?

It’s amazing how changing from bunker fuel, which was causing reflective sulfur clouds, has affected the oceans so much. First year they cut the sulfur in their fuel. A short term bandaid ripped off. Now we are e going to really see how bad it’s gonna get.

fertilizers in open see could create green algae patches to absorb co2.
A calculated and controlled eutrophication process in huge parts of the open see could create biomas with co2 creating a trophic cicle with phytoplankton.
We just need electric automatic satélite controlled boats to release gradually nutrients in the see.
The ocean could be a huge co2 sink.

I’m an Albertan and it is obvious to me that there are lobbyists actively slowing realistic solutions to climate change here. Those like Al Gore that can see through the smoke screen need to continue speaking up and pointing out the hypocrisy and dark triad traits of industry.

That’s like saying that smoking does not cause cancer because if it did, cigarette companies would find a way to come together to stop people from smoking. Are you really that naive about how some humans operate in this life?
What if climate change is real and the existing power structure just wants things to stay as they are because they’ve analyzed the profit margins on a clean energy revolution and see that it would hurt their bottom line and/or reduce their power? It is estimated that between 2-4% of the human population is sociopathic, meaning lack of empathy or none. These types see everything and everyone in terms of themselves. They only care about themselves and how things effect them directly because other people’s feelings do not effect them.
The ones that are smart enough to avoid jail are often attracted to positions of power and influence. Read “Snakes in Suits “. There are really selfish people in this world who will put personal interests above everything else. You are seriously underestimating the evil some people are capable of.

Fun fact: Most of the global warming problems from burning fossil fuels is not the CO2, but from the wasted energy released as heat that dissipates into our atmosphere; Therefore, heating up our planet. This goes for all power generation and use — even electricity. Also, the production of everything we consume.
Kitti McConnell
August 11, 2023 at 4:35 pm
During the Dust Bowl in the USA, Congress ignored the problem until those dust storms struck Washington DC. It will take a hurricane making landfall on Washington DC while Congress is in session for them to decide it’s time to act. Maybe then the USA will really take the right actions to stop global warming and climate change.

The unfortunate truth about this talk by Al Gore is that money, as the current system is, cannot and will never help us with a solution to our problems. It can’t help because it is the problem.

In a certain sense, you are absolutely correct.
See Naomi Oreskes’ writings and talks for some background on where climate change denialism came from.
It is an artifact of the long term project to create and defend the bogus notion of the “free market.”

So he says emissions are the enemy and doesn’t even mention nuclear? How did things turn out for Germany with their fast track push for renewable? How do the Dutch farmers feel about the regulations you’re pushing? Why put do much emphasis on the enemy (oil & gas companies) solving the problem? If your proposed solutions were better the market would reflect that. Wind and solar are much less energy dense and much more expensive. So you’re proposing to raise the cost of energy/living and push out the people of the world who live on the margins? All while preaching with an outlet, watch, and lifestyle that consumes much more fossil fuels than the average person on earth. Try making steel, concrete, plastics, and fertilizers with wind and solar. Or try running the world without them. All emotion and no reality. Spoiled delusional rich kids telling the world they can’t industrialize and lift themselves out of poverty.

While I applaud you for calling out the corruption and crime of Big Oil/Coal, you mention nothing about the corrupt politicians who are snorkeling down bribes to stand in the way of cleaning things up. It isn’t just the fossil fuel companies, it is all of their enablers in government. If we “need to do something about it,” just what would you suggest? Government is absolutely complicit here.

August 13, 2023 at 5:56 pm
Absolutely none of the items mentioned in this speech are a solution. Folks, we have adopted habits as a collective that require a different approach. It’s later than you think and we are most definitely behind the eight ball on this. Have you looked into the energy demand? How much of that demand is covered by “renewable energy”? What the cost will be to replace demand with alternative energy, both monetarily and from oil resources? I will give him this, he is a great actor. See ya!

Governments don’t know the meaning of “promise”. What makes anyone think they understand what a “pledge” is.
As long as profits run the show, this won’t move anywhere near fast enough.
We need to impact profits. We need to make these companies feel the pain that our kids will feel if they do not shift their profit agenda.

August 13, 2023 at 6:49 pm
Agree, he needs to run again! He didn’t mention that for nearly half the world’s population, renewables such as solar, wind and batteries hit a glass ceiling at around 50% of the base load required for the 3x more electricity we will need as well as industrial heat. For the other neatly 50%, only fossil fuels and Nuclear can provide. Fortunately there are now 70 fourth-generation (all walk-away-safe) nuclear solutions underway, from micro nuclear’s 1 to 10 Megawatts, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs, meaning modular, mass-producible), under 300 Megawatts. Some designs will run primarily on old Nuclear waste. Some use Thorium, and some based of low-pressure, high-efficiency, high heat, Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs).
