What does it sound like when you listen to a speaker that’s roughly the price of the home you put it in? The Wilson Chronosonic XVX is a $370,000 audio supertower of seven drivers stacked atop one another producing a spectrum of sound beyond the range of human hearing—literally providing more realistic detail than you could possibly hear. WIRED Luxury Gear Editor Jeremy White breaks down what that leap in price actually produces in audio quality, and the surprisingly intricate and impressive technology housed in both.

Speakers for the monied and emotionally vacant to be optimally enjoyed alone. Maybe spend some of that money exploring the emotional poverty then buy really good, less expensive, speakers that could be enjoyed with the new friends that one enjoys. Or even hire live musicians to play the music one enjoys thus providing employment for artists displaced by AI.

I know someone who spent $500k on a speaker system, and yeah, it sounds “great,” but it doesn’t sound “better” than most ~$2k systems I’ve heard. It just sounds “different.”

Listen at some point if I want to feel like the singer or the instruments are in the room with me l I’ll just go to a concert it’s much cheaper where everyone dress in a nice fancy suite plus I’ll be able to take my wife to

I sold high end audio for years. $1000 is all you need for an emotional experience. Very good audio is extremely cheap these days especially with headphones. The extreme high end is just a luxury and a flex for rich folks. That million dollar experience can be had for 50k with used gear and a room treatments.

    • @Therejectionartist

      July 10, 2024 at 9:49 am

@@KimmoJaskari Well I am sure there is a lower, more reasonable pricepoint, where I can get quality sound and not feel like I have to be at my own personal stadium concert, as it occurs I live in an environment where it’s not practical to have a lot of volume, hence the headphones, but I could be persuaded to a decent system, just not at 370,000$.

  27. @mackenziemarceau2616

    July 10, 2024 at 6:57 am

I get an emotional response to music all the time with headphones that cost me around $250.00, five years ago! All that’s require is to want that response. Anyone who spends $370,000.00 on a couple of phallic towers of speakers (sorry, drivers) has to be either rich as f***, or dumb as f***.

A great video! I think this was well made video that briefs the audio hobby.
When you first experience the full tower floorstanding speakers and very well set up hifi system, it changes your world.
If you like music, it’s very well worth looking into it.
I wish “wired” to cover how each generation think of HiFi audio hobby.

Our ears operate at the speed of sound, which is far slower than the speed of light the eyes take in. Generative listening is the art of developing deeper silences in yourself, so you can slow our mind’s hearing to your ears’ natural speed and hear beneath the words to their meaning.

Nobody buys $370,000 speakers for the sound quality and if you do spend that amount of money for speakers that provide perfect audio to one spot only you aren’t ever going to sit still long enough to enjoy the music.

  43. @jcvscorner

    July 10, 2024 at 1:55 pm

The thing that annoys me so much about this video is that it frames it as if you either buy a Sonos (or other) streaming speaker OR an unbelievably expensive stereo setup. There are amp and speaker sets at the same price of the Sonos that sound soooo much better than the Sonos. Do yourself the favor and go to a store that sells both and I am sure that you will pick a cheap stereo system, because it makes do much more out of the music you feed it…

I fact, go and buy 2 echo 4th gen and 2 echo subs, or pair 2 homepods for stereo. The key is stereo when buying wifi speakers. This absurd experiment putting a mono Sonos against literally the most expensive speaker in the world in a compromised mono setup is insulting the audience’s intelligence….

    July 11, 2024 at 10:48 am

The explanation of the benefits playing back higher frequencies up to 30Khz, is just plain wrong. Your ears cannot hear it, most mics cannot pick it up, and most engineers use some sort of low-pass filter on their recordings that limits the highest frequency, because often 14Khz-20Khz (the upper range of our hearing) often is not a nice sound. The recordings that we listen to simply don’t have anything to playback at 30Khz, especially if they were recorded or mixed to tape. It is just regurgitating the marketing material.

The wilson’s are crafted extraordinary well, but are not state of the art in sound reproduction. Plenty of 5-20k systems are full range and objectively better. Chronosonic is the audio equivalent of a 30k hermes purse

  75. @grendol6968

    July 11, 2024 at 11:31 pm

Honestly, due to hearing damage (temporary or permanent) I have to wonder how many humans will actually hear what is coming out of the higher performance speakers, regardless of the performance per cost ratio. I remember concerts more depending on who I share them with, not the acoustic performance. I think that may be a factor in my audiophile decisions.

  76. @BC-ni3sk

    July 12, 2024 at 2:20 am

Sorry but the umps isn’t there for me with the Wilson. I think an over hyped brand.

  77. @JohnLee-db9zt

    July 12, 2024 at 3:58 am

There are a many fallacies in this review. More drivers absolutely does not mean more detail. Lol. More drivers give louder sound and wider frequency response, but at the expense of detail and coherence. The crucial part of a speaker is not just the drivers, but also the crossover. Many speaker designers would argue crossover is the heart of any speaker. If you can get away with no crossover or fewest possible number of components, then the better. Heavy dense cabinets are not necessarily better. They can over-dampen the sound into lifelessness. Some speaker companies utilize certain cabinet vibrations to complement the overall sound.

  82. @Gomez561

    July 12, 2024 at 1:59 pm

One big point of why people build High-end Audio systems is to be sonically transported to the time and space of when a recording was made. When a good speaker system is set up in a properly acoustically treated space, live recording playback should create a realistic illusion of being in the space of the recording. You should audebly “feel” the size of the space and the arrangement or sound stage of musicians in front of you… you can feel the size of music in huge church or the intimate space of a tavern etc. I believe that is the biggest point this video missed out on. That is not to say one can’t enjoy an orchestral piece through your iPhone speaker… my point is that there are levels to this sh!te (haha) and recreating the visceral experience of what it actually sounds like to be at a concert hall is not cheap. Also, one can spend a fraction of this $370K system and build a system and a room that can get say 80% “close” to what this does. In High-end audio getting to 100% of what a system like this can do is where things get very expensive like crazy compounding price increases that can exceed this $370,000 system.

    July 12, 2024 at 6:33 pm

If you want a speaker like this just buy a Beolab 90 it would be cheaper and lot better ( 150.000$ ). Or if you wanna passive speaker like this just buy a Burmester Bc350, Sonus Faber Aida, Bowers&Wilkins Signature 801 D4 and Bowers&Wilkins Nautilus. The wilson audio just aims rich people and it’s not even good as the brands that i mentioned. Almost half a price you literally can buy Beolab 90 and they are even better than the passive speakers that i mentioned but the sound and choosing a speaker is too subjective.

  92. @moinak001

You do not need $370K speakers to get better sound than the Sonos Era 300. I have the Sonos Era 300 pair with a Sub Gen 3 setup for casual background music in the dining room and another setup with Monitor Audio bookshelf speakers and and an SVS subwoofer for more serious listening. That I consider on the more expensive side having spent a few thousands on it including streamers, amplifier, preamp, DSP processor, turntable, cables and some acoustic panels. There is a stark difference between the two setups. Heck, Sono’s own Five Hifi speakers for $1100 a pair will better the Era 300s.

Wilson Audio stuff falls into Audio Art category. It is analogous to someone buying a painting for $1million for example.

I am an audiophile and used to go to high end audio listening rooms. The best system I ever experienced was Martin & Logan electrostatics with an Entec subwoofer and a Goldmund turntable.

Not sure why this piece didn’t talk about the source, most audiophiles consider vinyl to be the best source for high-end audio. Interestingly enough, the dealer and I both chose the same test material, White Winds by Andreas Vollenweider, on vinyl of course. It is a flawless recording that demonstrates staging and separation better than any other recording I’ve ever heard.

Currently I own a Linn audio system.

The thing about high-end audio systems is the difference in sound separation, staging and clarity between a $500 and a $2,000 system is far greater then the difference between a $2,000 system and a $50,000 system. The difference is even more subtle as you go up in price. Many would not be able to tell the difference between a $50,000 system and the $350,000 system demonstrated in this video.

Bottom line is if you CAN tell the difference and care, and have the resources, then a six-figure audio system is worth it.

I promise you, this can all be achieved for under 5k if you just upgrade your car speakers and add in a 15” sub in the trunk.

If your pallette, being audio, food, etc, cannot discern something that provides more sensory depth, then by all means get the lesson expensive option. It’s about ROI. In this example, the Sonos provides 70% of the performance at less than 1% of the cost.

Speakers above a certain decibel or frequency shouldn’t even be allowed to be purchased unless you have a permit for it.

so you need to stand still within the strict parameters of the 370k speakers…OR you can buy some good audio technica headphones and a solid tube headphone amp.

speakers like the kronos are unnessesary… more drivers is not more detail, its really more chances for comb filtering and introduces issues with crossovers (what driver gets the high notes vs middle vs low)

Kind of rediculous comparison. Even all these plastic can-dsp processed speakers will perform way better in pairs. There is just no physical way to truly decode stereo with just one speaker. Development makes smarter, “better” and smaller speakers. But its actually going backwards at the same time due to that the market tricks you into thinking that one will be enought.
You dont need to go all bananas with millions of dollars, just dont buy one single speaker and you have come a long way in terms of how the sound was recorded.

When comparing a $370k+ audio system to a $500 one, there are clear differences in performance and experience. These differences are relative, much like with watches, wine, houses, or cars. Some might dismiss high-end products because they haven’t experienced them, similar to how someone who only drives a regular car might never understand the thrill and experience of driving a Ferrari. Without firsthand experience, opinions are often shaped by cognitive biases and personal perspectives. Additionally, value is subjective; many people prioritize savings or seek the best options within a certain price range or lifestyle. Conversely, those who have experienced high-end products and value the enhancements find the differences worthwhile. Ultimately, it’s not about good versus bad, but about understanding how our perspectives, values, and cognitive biases influence our view of luxury purchases.
