      Varies case by case, but you’re right that in some words they are pronounced. It tends to be words with French roots though – native Germanic words like wife and house don’t like having coda vowels (cf. Old English wı̄f, hūs)

    I had a college professor that would also recite the Lord’s Prayer as his Medieval English pronunciation example. That class was not very useful except for when I went to an AA meeting and I vaguely knew what the words were supposed to be.

    I took a course on Chaucer and my professor said about the same thing. He told us “if you have taken a foreign language, pronounce the vowels like you would in that language, and assume that all the letters are meant to be there to be pronounced.”
