Meet MethaneSAT: the satellite circling Earth right now to track global emissions from methane: a highly potent, short-term greenhouse gas. Environmental advocate Millie Chu Baird details the heat-trapping side effects of a planet full of methane — and explains why understanding where it comes from and taking steps to reduce it is the single most important thing we can do to affect climate change in our lifetimes. (MethaneSAT is part of the Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change.)

Theres a good video by Climate Town called “Natural Gas is Scamming America” about methane leaks, greenwashing methane, etc. Its very informative and its good to know methaneSAT is trying to solve this

Just out of curiosity. How much of a carbon footprint does the worlds space programs and military weapons testing produce ? How much C02 is produced by cars planes yachts of think tanks ? How much CO2 is produced by internet shipping providers around the world ? Let’s do a study and find that answer.😮
@stevo4535
July 26, 2024 at 9:00 am
They don’t want that answer.
@policeman1104
July 26, 2024 at 11:27 am
I can answer some of your questions. Wars climate impact isn’t mostly due to fired weapons but through destroyed infrastructure which needs to be rebuild. Space programs also produce lots of emissions. Scientific missions like this though have the potential to help reduce emissions by a lot. Internet shipping is actually better for the environment than retail shopping because it’s more efficient (heating emissions from retail stores, etc. And even if people fly around the world to give Ted talks about climate change one could argue that they also help spread the word about climate issues and its importance. Obviously that has an indirect or direct influence on politics and peoples lifestyle decisions. That’s not to say that all of your concerns need to be addressed more consequently and emissions should be lowered in all of the sectors you mentioned. But while space and green think tank emissions are obvious their net emissions are most certainly negative 🙂

It is encouraging to see some of our space based sensing capacity being redirected from looking at the stars to helping understand the problems we face here on our home planet. Knowing where greenhouse gases are coming from is essential to reducing them in the most efficient way possible.

You list some sources of methane; but they are all land based. People miss one large source: the ocean. There is more carbon held at the bottom of the ocean as hydrated methane than any of the other sources. That is why I am asking: Can your methane satelite measure methane over water? If it can, then you have all the answers that you need…

This is another tool for tracking methane emissions, which is a positive. What really needs to occur, as she mentioned, is affecting human behavior. Methane Sat is another great tool, but we need solutions ( corrective and preventive actions) to mitigate CO2 and Methane emissions.

The next step, after measuring where it is emitted, is to charge fees proportional to emissions. THAT will give industries an incentive to *reduce* their emissions.
In general, we can make the world better by charging extraction and emissions fees, then sharing fee proceeds. We can promote sustainability AND end poverty.
