As a neurodivergent child going to school far from home, Misan Harriman found solace in the internet — “an endless library of the extraordinary,” as he calls it. In this powerful talk, he shares his journey as a self-taught photographer of extraordinary range, from covering the greatest civil rights movements of our lifetimes to becoming the first Black man to shoot a cover for British Vogue. A reminder that each one of us can find our own ways to create a better world for all.

Images convey the beauty of how things are and what they’re genuinely meant for in this world. Some take these photographs for granted, but they’re essentially pieces of artifacts we must yearn to preserve for a long period of time.

“At its best… photography can let us know the work that we need to do.”

Thank you for sharing your beautiful perspective, Misan and thank you for hosting this talk to all those at TED.

Yes! Absolutely! An image talks highest than thousands words … and our mind needs images to co-create a better future

Ending racism is one thing but stereotyping one race as racist due to past crimes then labelling them RACIST & GUILTY by default is also RACIST.

When will people ever learn that COLOUR is just skin deep ?

    • Daniel

      August 1, 2023 at 12:54 pm

Nobody stereotyped any race as racist.

All he argued was that the Americans government and its supporters have enabled racism over the years.

      That’s just a fact.

Recognizing racism doesn’t bother me. Perhaps there is some reason you are defensive.

    • Russ Bilderback

      August 1, 2023 at 1:38 pm

@NoExitLoveNow recognizing racism is good. It’s selective recognizing of it that is not. Aka only recognizing the racism that fits one’s narrative or agenda.

    • NoExitLoveNow

      August 1, 2023 at 2:22 pm

@Russ Bilderback Sorry if reality doesn’t fit your narrative or agenda.

@NoExitLoveNow I don’t have an agenda. And your racism is showing.

    • DK

      August 3, 2023 at 3:11 pm

@Russ Bilderbackthe only thing stopping racism from progression are racists and their defenders like you who find opinions from a minor group of people and pretend it’s stopping you from progressing against racism when the real thing stopping you is your unwillingness to progress against racism.

Show me where the general populous believes racism is only a one way street. Not comments on the internet or engagements with a few people, show me proof of a mass societal consensus of that. There is none. You’re just perpetuating an issue that only a few people agree with.

Also, calling anything and everyone racist for merely disagreeing with you is also not contributing anything to the progress against racism.

TED just deleted a pro veganism video this morning. It was put out and removed in less than 24 hrs.

Sometimes their videos are junk thought, and they are starting to realize it.

For society to change, the proponents must first be intellectually honest or they will have their thoughts challenged in a brutal way.

If you want to end racism, you must go after ALL racists equally. TED doesn’t.

Profound and deep ! thank you and indeed.. anyone talking to a ceo or someone that can influence a big company that is plundering Africa ( or any country) for their own riches without giving anything back, should indeed show them the images. And i do agree with you on a lot yet.. people maybe going true troubling /life lesson things but… life it self and earth are still beautiful <3 Even when you are not famous l,living humble ,home bounded by chronicle illness 😉 with the whole world at my hand with the internet (indeed what a blessing it is)

Why couln’t he help the children where he lives instead of buying plane tickets? He thinks there is an environmental crisis so he buys a plane ticket. Seems like he just wants the image of being a caring person.

You have to get to an elevated platform to spread a message more effectively. Instead of the ideals being limited to your community you send them to your home and many others. There is nothing wrong with that and if you think there is, please explain.

I’ll answer it, “Because racism originates from survival and prejudices/stereotypes help us detect patterns around us increasing our probability of survival. Noticing skin color and forming judgements is a natural tendency of the human psyche.” That is why ending racism is a debate.

    • Joannot

      August 3, 2023 at 4:51 am

You missed a great occasion to stay quiet.
Prejudice which is by definition a preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience, helps you survive?

      Where is the evidence?

    • John Gonzalez

      August 3, 2023 at 11:40 am

@Joannot there is plenty evidence that institutions classify as scientific racism. For example, Asians have the highest IQs out of all the races on average, Mexicans are hard working manual laborers, whites are the most innovative in tech, Black are the most athletic/fastest, and they have the lowest IQs and literacy rates out of all the races. There are genetic differences in the different races of human beings. Equality does not exist in nature

Special shout out to your daughter. Glad that the world discovered you. The first black man to shoot any cover for British vogue. Dear Misan more Grace. As much as the racists may come, they won’t ever see you. Your lenses are always where voices ought to be lifted. God bless you

Harriman’s talk is a reminder that images have the power to move us, to inspire us, and to change the world. The photographer’s role is not just to capture what is in front of the lens, but to use their unique perspective and vision to create something that speaks to the viewer on a deeper level. Harriman’s work is a beautiful example of this, and his TED Talk is well worth watching for anyone interested in the power of images and the creative mind behind them.

Photography has the power to capture and reveal important moments, raise awareness, and inspire action, emphasizing the importance of intentionality, empathy, and using one’s influence to speak up for those in need.

Misan Harriman is a true definition of an artist. He isn’t just an excellent photographer but an extraordinary storyteller. How he made the connection between the image of Mrs King, taken by the first black man to win Pulitzer for photography, and that of King III tweeting his work, and finally how he became the first black man to shoot the British Vague is just massively extraordinary! ❤

Of course you make it about Saint Fentanyl. Dude was a robber who died of a drug overdose and so many Black people praise him for it, I don’t get it.
