December 9, 2024 marked a turning point for quantum computing, when Google unveiled its Willow chip – triggering a surge in investor interest and sending publicly traded quantum stocks soaring. More than a year later, Bloomberg’s Tom Mackenzie speaks to leading European pioneers to ask: Are we any closer to real-world, mainstream quantum computing? We hear from Nu Quantum CEO & founder Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, Phasecraft CEO & co-founder Ashley Montanaro and Riverlane CEO & founder Steve Brierley.

Oh, the next big thing. Is it going to consume energy of a country? Or they will be built in space?

oh my goodness not another over-hype of something that is so misunderstood. Do people understand what Q-compute is and what it actually does?

It was estimated prior to last year that Quantum needed 20M physical qubits to crack current encryption. that number was reduced to 1M lastt year and further reduced to 100K this year. Seems like this times it is different.

Decryption algorithms continue to evolve – Regev’s algorithm for instance. Also, a Chinese researcher claims that current encryption standards can be decrypted with 372 physical qubits. This does not address scaling, but it may be a tangible building block. Q-Day is currently forecast for as early as 2028. Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is in commercial use today. Unfortunately, it is not yet broadly deployed, so the “record-now – decrypt-later” strategy will still result in massive exposure.

Exactly. It is the impact of AI on quantum that is making the difference. Wait until AI starts writing quantum algorithms

Quantum tech dev is a very complex landscape. Commercial roll out is underway with companies like D-Wave using hybrid annealer configurations which have integrated error corrections capabilities but are limited to solving optimization problems very quickly – a quickly growing fintech area. One of the biggest challenges in quantum computing is adapting the available tech to solve the problems in unconventional ways because replacing traditional gates with qubits in an existing compute architecture doesn’t provide any tangible benefit. While our technical advances accelerate exponentially, it still requires breakthroughs – which can never be scheduled.
